I haven't heard of a replacement being developed or even a sequel. I am a returning player considering spending some money but am weary considering it is a 9 year old game. If someone knows of of a replacement/successive development effort I'd like to know. I am really enjoying the added content from the last time I played...

In a January live stream they said that 2018 was their most profitable year ever. Combine that with the new Star Trek series' in development and I honestly think there is another 5+ years left in this game.

Yes, I do believe it has more life left, especially with the current new series and two more in the works (Picard and Section 31). Star Trek LIVES... and so does STO!

I don't believe CBS will pull a "Lucas Arts" and get another team to develop a new game and sunset this one... LA as to what happened with SWG and SWTor... So, seeing how Star Trek is getting more traction recently, definitely more life in STO.

I wonder if it's making enough money for a dev team to create STO 2.0? With (hopefully) less space ability flashy graphics that can obscure gameplay. They could also make Ground gameplay more streamlined and fun to play while giving the whole package a graphics polish from the ground up.
I know they've been doing improvements with some of the ships and, most recently, hair but let's be honest. there's a lot more that could be done to bring it to 2019 standards.

STO was launched at a time where Star Trek had met it's on-screen silence in terms of canon and the only other thing around was the JJ Trek movie and fan films.
So which such an on-screen absence, and should that have continued today - I think it should've been dead already. But that didn't happen. Star Trek has returned on the screen and I've seen few places where Discovery/CBS is also advertising STO. During this period more JJ Trek movies came out too.
Regardless of Discovery having mixed opinions - the discussions from them is driving Star Trek forward and if you ask me Cryptic is profiting as people are trying out this game out of curiosity and there's some new blood coming in. For them it's great, because now the amount of content Star Trek has to offer to a newbie or a player returning after a really long time is a lot.
Also, this partnership they have going hand-in-hand with releasing TV episodes of a current episode is really unique. I mean, you do these episodes and you can tie in now why when ISS Discovery jumped to the 'starfleet universe' those ships were able to destroy them. Perhaps due to this it was already weakened!
So yes, I don't think it's dying anytime soon or the near future. But it's also a matter of how much Cryptic invests and capitalizes in this opportunity as well.

Yea I've often spoke on STO forum's as a volunteer community team member [Bug Hunter] about they have over done some abilities with too many flashy effects. So I do understand where your coming from. Still some DEVs think big and flashy is better, rather than realize often all we want is something sharp, eloquent, and subtle. Their are so many well designed planetary systems, backgrounds images, in the distance I'd rather enjoy looking at. I mean everyone doesn't mind seeing beam, cannons, or other more subtle effects. Yet effects shouldn't be much larger than Gravity Well's or Tyken's Rift's, and even those could be cleaned up &/or improved. The temporal powers I think is where they really missed the mark however, yet there are various in several specializations, or professions, that would benefit from 'less is more' from game designers.

Back to the CORE of the thread.
While I was not a fan of what Discovery did with Klingons, I still follow the show and enjoy watching where it may lead. As a result I also think it's given STO a bit of renewed interest, especially after such a LONG gap from Voyager & then Enterprise.
It's nice to see they are listening to FANS who didn't like Klingons without hair; so the new season has 'claimed' they shaved it off during the War. And I also see that the Klingon Leader (Female) & the Klingon who was Augmented had a child. I don't know if that may result in Klingon's appearance continuing to EVOLVE, or is a precursor of how Enterprise justified Klingons from TOS as Human Augments. Still even Enterprise had Klingon's similar to the Movies &/or TNG, so I don't know if they will ever address this or just claim this as the new normal?
Still many think CBS &/or Paramount are trying to evolve / change what is considered PRIME. Paramount under their license with CBS can't use what is traditional considered Prime, and many suspect rather than amend the agreement, they are instead trying to evolve what was thought as Prime as an Alternate reality. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how the story evolves...
Regardless I'm just happy to really see a new Star Trek series finally. Regardless it's likely good for STO to run along a current Star Trek series, and that certainly has peaked many new players interests for sure. And with now so much vast content to explore, many new players have a lot more to do than in the first 4-5 years.
So I think there's lots of room still left to grow, perhaps easily for yet another 5-7 years possible more.
I can say I'm excited by what they did having the former Emperor of the Terran Empire a member of Section 31. Seems fitting as she aligns with STO's character of Franklin Drake.

Given the circumstance, as far as we know and like this STO experience, our input is pretty simple.
You want to support and play it further, when you can afford, buy some zen. (If their income drops, the product itself becomes obsolete and will slowly become worse, then get sacked, since it's a snowball effect).
Even the simple 1000 zen purchase adds up. Or 2000 zen during ship sale+bonus zen promotions. That lands you a t6 ship at -33% of its price. And you can switch the remaining zen to dil.
Sometimes, you need to learn to value your time and throw some cash at your hobby.
Truth is uncomfortable most of the times. That's why you gotta face it every time.

Or, wait for the next Lifetime Sale and jump on that. That's what I did late last year.
It's a gamble, but I think it's a safe bet right now that you will get decent value for the money with a Lifetime purchase. There's still life left in this old horse.

What's interesting about this is that SyFy and Trion Worlds did the TV Show with the the MMO thing with Defiance. (https://www.polygon.com/2015/10/16/9...e-trion-worlds). Star Trek, IMO, is and will continue to do it better.

I'd say at a minimum, there's 5 years left, but probably more realistically 10+, I think the game has gotten quite a solid ground base that it won't die off anytime soon.

VERY good question!
In my opinion, without a replacement, then as long as they can churn out content. And that's interesting because no movies are in the works and Disco has been used up for now. I mean, there were some interesting factions STo pulled out of their butts to make content (Dyson Sphere, Vaaduar and Tzenkethi come first to mind). I suppose they could make more based on something from somewhere.
5 years may be generous.

Look at the Admiral, making all kinds of sense.
I agree totally. I miss the old STFs that actually took coordination. I remember when The Conduit and Khitomer Vortex actually took some thought and required positioning and players to do their roles (Science Ships on crowd control, etc) to get things done.
I miss that. Difficulty shouldn't just be how hard things hit, but mechanics as well.

Personally I reckon it’s got a few good years left in the old gal yet. The current renaissance of Star Trek has meant it’s probably one of the only decent games in the IP that can offer what fans might want and still remain current to the ongoing shows. That direct link with the studios and broadcast content is a massive boost for the game, they can literally drop content in the day after it premieres. Not many games can boast of that.
I would say though that to continue the game needs to have a bit of a graphical revamp and several systems are in dire need of attention (doffs, fleet system, reputations).
They can’t just keep adding more of the same endlessly for another five years. Innovation is the key here but also engaging content for you mature (as in high level) players is critical. I do love the game but another half decade of a lockbox every three months, a rep twice a year, a few episodes a season? That’s going to, and already is getting boring and tiresome.
