I'd like to say that any episode directed by Frakes is Money. There hasn't been an episode of discovery that he has directed that I haven't enjoyed.
Lt. Commander Airiam's loss was heartbreaking. Especially when we are just finally getting to know her character. Seeing the suffering that she has endured in the past. Also watching her fight the AI that has taken control over her. There was a reason she wanted Tilly to stay close. Since at that point she knew odd things were happening. I got the impression that Airiam wasn't aware of what she was doing when under the influence of the AI. Until Tilly was able to communicate with the real Airiam in the airlock.
We didn't know her for long. But in the end she laid down her life to protect her ship and her crew. Had she been beamed back to Discovery, the AI Controlled Officer would've been a threat to both. Captain Pike knew this as well which is why he ordered Michael to open the airlock. A Captain's first duty is to their ship. Even if it requires ordering someone to their death.
I was happy to see Burnham get taken down a peg or two. I hope that Spock's words will resonate with her in the future.
I'm looking forward to next week. From the title of the episode it looks like we will find out who the red angel is.
