Background story:
One of the Games listed on GoG was SW KOTOR 1 & 2. I heard its a nice precursor to SWTOR, so I bought both for $20 ($9.99 ea) When reading the game, it sounds pretty awesome. The first one is playing as the Jedi, which the second is playing as the Sith. What I misread was that battle are turn-based? so I am still in the learning stages of it, but I am not one for turn-based games.
I'm curious to know how many UFP played KOTOR and can give some advice on what to expect, tips for playing, and what your opinion was about both games.

I recently have bought both games and wantedt to play them, but always when I start them, the game is shutzing down.
But theoretically I'm in possession of both games.

I've completed both KOTOR 1 and KOTOR 2 and absolutely love them.
Combat is turn-based but you can turn off the auto-pausing, so it's basically queuing actions up in real time. It's certainly not like the more action based Kyle Katarn Jedi Knight/Jedi Academy series. Far more it's focused on the story, morality and repercussions of your actions, and the actions of others'.
Tips for playing? Grab the Restored Content mod (at work so can't find a link at the moment). This if I recall fixes some bugs and quest lines and adds missing but non-essential bits (e.g. quests that were half-written have now been finished by the mod developers). I can't remember a lot of what it does but I remember considering it essential when I first encountered it.
Make sure to keep all of your companions' equipment updated, and try playing as a couple of them to get used to range versus melee versus force user.
Get Force Lightning maxed out ASAP. Hits multiple opponents at level 3.
Force Speed is useful for getting around the maps a bit quicker.
They might not be your sort of game. They're very much story rather than action driven, and run at a slower pace as a result.

You start to understand why people wanted KOTOR 3, not swtor. lol. Those two have an epic storyline. You're not restricted to go either light or dark in either of the games. Heck if you want to you could avoid force stuff all together haha. There are some mods out there that overhaul it to fix some bugs and visuals to more modern day. Have some fun and explore every inch of maps. I envy you getting to experience the first time. It truly is a wonderful story.

You don't really play a Sith in 2, your character is a Jedi who went off to fight the Mandalorians with Revan, before he fell to the Dark side. Your character returned to the Jedi after the war but the council chose to banish you.

I really enjoyed them and there are some references to them in SWTOR. KOTOR had a decent story and it's Star Wars, I like to replay these from time to time and still enjoy the replays.
Once you get use to the turn base style, it's really fun. It's been a while, but I recall a way to turn off auto-pause, so it can be more live action, but I like to pause and setup the max amount of attacks and type of attack I want to use then unpause and watch the battle unfold.
You need to save up your computer spikes for near the end of the first game to get a light or dark (depedning on your alignment) robe that has good stats. It requires either 25 spikes or a little less if you focus on computer use skills.
