$12.99 when billed on a monthly basis

A hot potato: Some gamers aren’t terribly amused with the offering, and that’s understandable considering other subscriptions like Apple Arcade and Xbox Game Pass offer far more titles at just $4.99 and $9.99 per month, respectively.
Bethesda on Wednesday launched a premium membership for Fallout 76 that affords paying subscribers a wealth of new features, exclusive items and benefits.

It has been something of a hot potato issue to say the least.
While I don't really agree with the way they've done it and feel that it would have been better served as a paid DLC type model, it's still unclear what they'll be doing with it going forward. That being said, I'm not defending them, neither am I going to slabber at them like a rabid dog. Equally, it's difficult to defend the behaviour of the community right now too. The F76 subreddit has gone toxic in the last 24 hours and anyone that remotely says anything positive is getting it in the neck. There's even been suggestions that the community should start bullying people who have it to make a point.
So allow me to be clear so you know where I am. I do have this new service. Remains to be seen if I'll keep it, but I've got it for now. When the notion of private worlds arose I'd toyed with getting my hands on one for the UFP. Unfortunately the way it works is a bit odd as it needs me to be there to start it and remain logged in to maintain it, but it's something I can do now after a fashion. Now there's any number of people out there that will no doubt disagree with my decision (that's fine) and many more who would probably insult and berate me just because of it (that's not fine) - so as far as I'm concerned, if you have the sub or not, it's irrelevant. It's the player choice and if someone wants it, they don't need the approval or say-so of the other players to get it.
It has unfortunately exposed the toxicity that existed within the player base, but it's the community that has turned on itself. I don't like what I've seen because of it and I'll likely quit the subreddit until a later date when hopefully, cooler heads prevail. I've seen this sort of thing happen before - a forum (a subreddit in this case) decides it speaks for the entire community and anyone who disagrees is the enemy.

I kind of agree this is an odd step for them, but to be fair what's the difference between this paid subscription and paying a subscription for any other MMO? You're not only paying for the game development, but also for the in-game cash AND server maintenance. I mean really part of that subscription is likely going to go towards the private server machine maintenance that EA has to pay for.
I for one don't think I would sign up for the subscription--and no disrespect to anyone who does! Personally, I have steered clear of subscription based games altogether for awhile now and prefer to buy the game once and play it, and if I decide the game is worth it I'll purchase the additional DLC's or other add-ons (like buying ZEN for starships in STO). Again, I have nothing against anyone who does pay subscriptions for games--that's their bussiness, not mine.
On the game itself, I've been a huge fan of Fallout games, and I played Fallout 76 till I got to the place where I was required to team up with others to progress. I haven't unlocked backpacks yet, done the latest dungeon type quests, or others because I'm not able to without someone else around--and I'll be honest I am a bit of a solo player.
Maybe being able to connect with a few on a private server could help me progress? That would be nice, actually...

From what I've read tonight, the new subscription benefits are actually causing users to lose items that are placed in the new stashes that the sub grants, which is making an already bad situation worse.
People already didn't like the microtransactions in the game, nor did they ask for an online game like we got with FO76, what in the world made them think that adding a $100/year sub was a good idea (other than greed of course)?

Seemed like the ESO model subscription to me when I glanced at it.

They've bought the servers down to fix the box thing, best I can gather it was caused by force quitting the game while it was loading. And Bar'ol is more or less on the money, it is quite similar to the ESO model, though it has been some many a year since I last played there.
