Moving Servers

Greetings.

I'm pleased to announce that we will be upgrading our server to a fully dedicated server with a new host. We have been fortunate to find a reputable host who has provided us with an unbeatable deal, allowing us to attain a fully dedicated server on a machine which is far more powerful than what we are currently hosted upon (along with 5 other customers).

We are aiming to complete the move before the weekend, and as such we will experience some downtime as the move progresses. This post will be updated with that information as soon as it becomes available.

DOWNTIME EXPECTED ON: TBA

There are a number of reasons we've felt the move has become necessary.
For one this is an excellent opportunity for us to future proof the UFP for 2011 and beyond, in the event that future Star Trek PC games require dedicated hosting (we pay for the year upfront to lower costs).
It also allows us a lot more freedom on what we can perform on the server. The UFPAC for example can be streamed directly via ufplanets.com, in a more professional and unique way (with a hint at possible HD).
The admin team have also noticed and are concerned by an increasing level of CPU usage and other issues that are cropping up, we can only surmise are as a result of the other customers sharing our current server. With a dedicated server, we won't have that concern, and of course we won't have the concern of annoying the host by consuming more resources than are allocated to us.

I'd like to add again a quick word and thank you to everyone who has donated since we've put the donation system in. Without your donations it would not be possible for us to explore these exciting opportunities which we can now share with you all.
Everyone in SFC looks forward to the new year of possibilities, and our new server will certainly help keep the UFP in top form for 2011.

This sounds like a great deal! I'm glad that {UFP} has been fortunate enough to have a member base willing to support the fleet.

Site admins get some shiney new toys to play with I believe. I think there is also a swimming pool and the bathrooms are much improved.
