Kinda have to agree with you Rayne.
I think I'm only watching it now out of habit.
Also have to admit I dislike Discovery a lot, but.. I'd much rather watch Discovery than this. At least in DIS the Federation acts like the Federation and people aren't cussing every four seconds and chopping peoples heads off for literally no reason.
STO's story is one of the main reasons I stuck around for so long. It might be filled with war and chaos, but we always come out on top after struggle and strife and when we do emerge.. we are stronger for it. STO's story is hope. STO's story is Star Trek.

Lol, no pleasing some people.
People moaned that DSC was in the past and interfered with existing canon.
Picard is set well after any event shown previously, in the future of the Trek universe and people complain it's not the same Federation because things are different.
It's pretty obvious what the situation is in Picard:
Romulus has been destroyed leaving a massive power vacuum that seems to have been filled with a lawless mess of pirates, raiders and other rogues. The Federation tried begrudgingly to help in the initial stages but pulled out after the Mars attack.
In light of the attack not only are Synthetic beings banned, but Starfleet and possibly the Federation in general is less willing to be so helpful to outsiders; it's essentially retreated within its own little bubble and become very inward looking. If I had to guess I'd say the loss of Mars shook the Federation; they lost a lot of ships and people and it forced them to confront the Synth situation for fear of another worse attack and loss of life.
It's why we have a Federation that seems hostile to outsiders, doesn't seem concerned with the apparent power vacuum where the RSE used to be and is only really interested in its own affairs. Within the Federation things are probably still fairly similar for most citizens; but on the edges probably not.
The whole scenario is drawing a parallel to the current isolationist behaviour of the USA, and tbh Star Trek has always played close to real life with its stories.
The only real difference in Picard is that we are seeing the galaxy from the point of view of the civilians and the downtrodden, not the hero officers on the glistening state of the art ships of the line. I suspect the Federation was always a bit of arose-tinted idealistic situation and probably a lot of our past heroes never really experienced the gritty underside.

Will just have to agree to disagree. I'm still interested to see where things go, just disappointed in the individual stories themselves, they seem incredibly shallow and very poorly written. I'll keep watching until the end of Season 1 at least. From there, well we'll see.
