Fallout 76's glitched NPCs will steal your best weapon when you die, and you can't get it back
Finders keepers, losers weepers
By Cal Jeffrey on April 22, 2020, 4:09 PM via techspot.com
Editor's take: Let's face it: Fallout 76 was not at all what it was hyped up to be. From the early development stages to the launch and throughout the subsequent fixes and updates, the game has been misrepresented and has had one problem after another. The latest is a game breaking glitch involving poorly executed NPC AI that will loot your body when you die.
Bethesda launched its latest major update to Fallout 76 last week called "Wastelanders." The expansion adds human nonplayer characters (NPCs) to the game, something that players have been clamoring for since launch. However, the NPCs are turning out to be more of a nuisance than a fun addition for the long-troubled game.
Players have been complaining to the Fallout 76 subreddit that the new nonplayer characters are stealing their most hard-fought gear when they are killed. The new NPCs will accompany players on specific missions, and that is where the problems set in. Sometimes the AI bots will loot users' corpses when killed. After respawning, some have found their most prized weapons gone from their inventory. Sure enough, one of the NPCs will be seen using it.
"I was playing the Riding Shotgun event, and I died," said one redditor reporting the bug to Bethesda. "I didn't even have that gun equipped when I died but one of the friendly NPCs that come with you stole my LMG with over 1300 rounds."
Another user described the problem as a "game-breaking bug." Game-breaking indeed. That player lost a Gatling gun — a weapon that can only be crafted with a lot of resources and only after grinding your Gunsmith perk to level four.
What's worse is there does not seem to be any way to get your items back. NPCs cannot die, they are merely knocked unconscious for a short time, and there is no way to loot or pickpocket them, as you can see in the above video.
Bethesda has responded to the reports saying that developers are currently "investigating" the bug, but had no other information at the time of this writing. In the meantime, users are advising other players to leave their best/rarest weapons in stoarage when doing the Riding Shotgun and Radiation Rumble missions until the developers have a fix.
"And when I saw the breadth of my domain, I wept, for there were no more worlds left to conquer."

I have been a Fallout fan since I discovered Fallout 3, and then went back to play the Interplay titles. Fallout 76 was a huge disappointment to me, and the fact that we missed out on a single player Fallout 5 so that they could push this one out made me want to scream.

Was gonna get 76 after playing modded fallout 4, been a fan since 3, like Silek I played the interplay titles, one of the few who liked tactics. What kept me from buying 76 was the fact I was gonna pay full price for the game and a monthly subscription fee, these bugs validate that decision..

I've been with Fallout since 1997. I found a demo of it on a cover disc (remember those?) loved it and went out and got it.
It certainly isn't without issues, that's for sure and the new bugs are quite serious that require urgent attention. But despite that, I've been enjoying it. I realise I'm in a very tiny minority by saying that, but at the end of the day, if I'm enjoying it and getting fun out of it, I'll stick with it. Could more be done? Could it be better? Of course it could.
You'll have to forgive me for seeming a bit cynical about the gaming press these days - this article seems quite reasonable, but 76 has become one of those games in my eyes that while there are those that have valid criticism and issues with the game, the vast majority of the hate seems to come from youtubers just looking for inflated views and those that think it's cool to hate on it and that anyone who enjoys the game should be taken outside and shot.
By the way, It's actually not that difficult to craft a gatling gun resource wise.

Todd Howard, just quit already. This absolute dumpster fire known as FO76 has left me with two points:
1. This was my first Fallout game, and will be my last.
2. I'm genuinely concerned for the state of Elder Scrolls 6, especially of Todd has a hand in it.

don't hold your breath about ES6 it's still going to be a buggy mess even if Todd has no hands in it.
