Human augmentation, in the long run, is a matter of staying relevant and useful as a species. The day will come, and they are actively working on it, when strong A.I. is developed. After that "Singularity" moment, Augmentation will be the only way humans can compete.
The Singularity is Near:When Humans Transcend Biology by Ray Kurzweil is a fascinating book. If you get the chance read it.

Just because you don't like elements of history
I never said that this is what I believe, please don't put words in my mouth!
In fact the opposite is true. Yet ancient greece and rome existed so long ago and so much was lost over time that, that what was left only could be interpreted and judged by later scholars through the lense of their time. In the same way as many people these days judge things happened in the past using modern day virtues.
With my "advocatus diaboli" I just try to point out the hypocrisy in saying for example "America is evil because it was build on war and slavery" but on the other hand saying that the modern civilisation was build on the shoulders of ancient Rome when Rome itself was build by war and slaves.
And no, I don't want to imply that you said that, it's more a "general message".
To return to the human question. Technology does present an opportunity for us to re-examine the definition of human
I think, after reading some other posts, that there was a very poor job of communication on my part...
What I meant with "humanity" is not the collective term many use for humans... It's more like what Heyallo said when he brought up Datas quest from TNG.

Religion does not define humanity, the actions of humanity define humanity.

Even the core 'Christian' value of treating others how you would like to be treated is not a Christian value, to begin with, but rather an emergent behaviour in nature.
This behaviour was what lead to animals living and hunting in packs, insects to form colonies, and familiar groups in primates and societies in Humans.
Renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead said that the earliest form of 'human' civilization was finding a 15,000-year-old femur bone (the long bone of your upper leg, and by that time-frame predates even Jewish history which is likely 10,000-12,000 years).
What was special about this femur was that it was set and healed.
In nature, a broken leg is a death sentence. You can't walk or move, which means you can't hunt or gather food, and thus you become food for other animals or starve.
That meant that another person took the time to set the bone, and care and feed that individual for the months it would take for that bone to properly heal.
So to 'really' answer your question: What defines human civilization? Caring for each other.

getting little too heated [...] not see a fight break out between members
Don't know about Jonathan, but I myself Am perfectly fine. It's passionate true, but that's the essence of a good discussion and it has been a long time that I had this much fun! Other people would have already called me every name that there is from the Bestseller "Everyone I don't like is litterally Hitler".
So I'm good.
Data's story is certainly interesting but any AI will never be human, but can mimic or be human-like. It's likely that if AI was to become a life of its own, it would have its own set of values and culture that would be different but derived from ours.
I don't know... Data was created by a human, he looks human (mostly) and he strifes to be "more human"... I myself have no problem seeing him as part of humanity. Same goes for his "children" on Coppelius. Maybe we'll see what the writes do with that in season two...or if it'll be "dropped" like many things in other series.
The general idea, why I ask this question in the first place is... Well I'm writing something for some time now and one of the main characters is exactly at this point but the thing is: He is the descendent of colonists who had over 400 years no contanct to earth. They had to do massive genetic alterations (plus natural mutations over time) to survive on their new home (a cold planet, 1.5 times earth gravity, much more dangerous predators ect.). They managed to create with a MacGuffin a small empire (because of their new home and "stuff" that happened in the 400 years since, they're quite militant, isolationist and their government is basicly a mix of the old japanese Shogunate (most of the original settlers were japanese) mixed with the HRE of the 10th and 11th century) but never thought about that themselfs untill they had "first contact" with what's left of mankind.
So to 'really' answer your question: What defines human civilization? Caring for each other.
I actually like that... Only problem I have is that animals do that to...

For me, the prime factor is genetics. So, people from Earth with base genetic stock = Terrans. Humans who have been living on Mars for a few generations and who have adapted to better survive their environment no longer have the same genetic stock as Earth people. So while they're humanoid, they've evolved away from Terrans to become 'Martians' for want of a better word.
But, that's just my $0.02
