Indeed it is, but it was what was in use at the time, I've attached a picture of the one the C64 used, the Amstrad and Spectrum had built in decks.

Floppy disks did exist of course at the same time (they first appeared in 1967 I think) and at this point we still had ones that actually were floppy, the 5.25 ones that I remember from the BBC Micro.
This all propably makes me sound older than I really am, but technology marches on. When CD Burners first started to appear they cost hundreds of pounds, that ended up with DVD burners for a tenner, the blu-ray burners came next and nowadays optical drives are going the way of the dinosaur as flash drives get larger and cheaper.
That tape drive looks like something I saw in elementary school growing up. Right there along side the 5.25" floppy's... I remember playing math games on the old Apple computer that used 5.25" diskette's in school.
My first "IBM compatible PC" was a custom build full tower with a 386SX.
Still have the following:
- Sinclair ZX81
- Spectrum +3 (Amstrad epoch)
- Amiga 500
- Atari Mega ST2
I like how you said it was a "custom build", like it was some high end gear back then, lol...
See with my 386, I cannot seat the 24x CD-ROM drive inward because the hard drive is huge. It was called Quantum I think "Bigfoot" series... honestly I was surprised it could read a 4 GB hard drive... I have soooooo much hard drive space for a machine like this.

I saw that one. You CAN get one without all the paperwork, box and driver disks for only $160.00 though. But it will do AWESOME things for your legacy system (so I have been reading).

Heh...remembers me of my first computer...
I was like 8 or 9... The tower was 2/3 my hight back then...
A: and B: Drives (half a year later my first CD Rom drive), 4mb RAM, DOS 6.0, WIN 3.1 and a BIG 14″ monitor...
All that to play Dune 2, the original Monkey Island and MAD TV...
Oh and don't forget the POWER BUTTON for more...power!

It would make sense though to have the diskette's to install the video drivers wouldn't it? I mean this isn't a plug-n-play system lol...
I decided to buy another Trident 1MB video card, it was like less than $30 USD. Probably more cleaner than my old card but it will have the metal slot plate so I can actually screw it into the casing because the one I have if you saw my pic it doesn't have a metal slot plate so I can secure it to the case.

I got Dune 2 installed... it is very fun, but those Harkonnen Siege Tanks were always a pain to kill, and they laid waste to everything too... oh let's not forget those worms swallowing my harvesters too... :/
