I'm not saying it's the
sole reason, just a significant motivator along with all the cosmetic and practical chances made in the upgrades. From a historical perspective (sorry my US History minor is going to show here): Traditionally, an HCN doesn't change even if you refit a ship into a new class. Obviously, Starfleet may go a different way in terms of the lettering, but historically the complete designation is part of the HCN. It's scifi, Starfleet's gonna Starfleet.
I don't know much about US Military but in Star Trek itself the ships gained an alphabet when undergoing a major refit. It's why I said theory aside, it had to get the alphabet either way (Not saying its a bad theory, but more like, it had to be done either way).

About the "-A" registry suffix I found a good theory about it:

About Adira Tal and for those of you who watched Shield of Tomorrow (Star Trek Adventures RPG from where the U.S.S. Sally Ride comes from):
I'm still waiting for the V'draysh Admiral showing his true face. Like a good Obsidian Order officer he knows how to play it in order to appear trustworthy. Having all the programmable matter integrated into Discovery, I wouldn't be surprised if 32c V'draysh takes over Discovery with some WoK style prefix code input. And then they have to purge it and revert back to the old style Discovery. Or why else do you think Discovery crew keep their "old-fashioned" blue jumpsuits and don't upgrade to the new 32c uniform, now that they are part again of the "Federation"?
And then we have typical Burnham whinning/drama ... meh ... I feel annoyed by it. Would have been better to see her more proud of her actions.

Ok, here's my thoughts.
1) Loved the fact that they got upgrades. It would really suck if they got whupped every time they went into battle. I mean, they went to earth and 2 shots took out their shields and nearly crippled them.
2) Not a big fan of the 32nd century Starfleet uniforms so I'm glad Discovery kept their uniforms. Love the badges though, especially with all the little bonuses that come with it. Although it does kind of show a bit of laziness behind the scenes with the prop guys. "Can't come up with a new design for a communicator or tricorder. Screw it, we'll incorporate it into the comm badge. I deserve a beer for that!"
3) Not sold on the detached nacelle concept. If the reason behind it is for safety in case another burn-like event happens again, great. But I'll have to see how it looks in future episodes to see how I really feel about it.
4) I've never been a big fan of Burnham. I've always felt that a Star Trek series shouldn't be too focused on one character and it seems like Discovery revolves around her. It would be different if she were an established character that was getting her own show to further her story (example: Picard), but this is a story about a starship and its crew. I think the spore drive should be more of a focus than any one individual character. Haha.
5) I'm kind of iffy on the personal transporters. Sure it makes things easier but so many more things could go wrong with them. And it puts hard working transporter chiefs out of business. It's a good thing Miles O'Brien went to DS9 from TNG and not Discovery or he'd be screwed.
Looking forward to more episodes though.

Actually, I looked into it again. I was under impression Constitution Enterprise was given A after major refit. It totally escaped me it was actually destroyed.

I honestly loved this episode. Georgiou has quickly become my favourite Terran and I love the look of the new Discovery, just a shame we didn't get to see her in action in the same episode. I'm digging the upgrade to all their tech and stations. Also I want somebody with video editing skills to edit Linus just popping in on all major Star Trek scenes.

Good fun episode again; this season is really hitting it's mark.
1) The new comm. badges were a bit of fun, like giving kids new toys. Linus misusing his was hilarious too;; how long until he "accidentally" beams into the female shower room lol!
2) Upgrades for Discovery make sense. The new consoles were a given and I'm guessing it's got better weapons, shields, sensors and a whole raft of other improvements.
3) Detached nacelles makes more sense if they are firstly for safety, housing their own warp cores, or more likely I suspect to grant better manoeuvrability at warp. They are like the ultimate version of Voyager's variable geometry pylons; I think that fits well into such a futuristic time period.
4) The A suffix makes sense as the ship has had a big refit, plus it was officially recorded as destroyed in the past. Also because of the whole issue with time travel being illegal it would get suspicious if a 900yr old ship was suddenly flying about.
Discovery is unknown enough, but also advanced enough (with the spore drive) that it could be believable that it was from a time fairly close to the Burn and not nearly a 1000yrs ago.
5) Talking of old ships, some of the stuff at the salvage yard was ANCEINT. The big ship that gets shot down was identical to the U.S.S. Hiawatha medical frigate from S2:E1 of DSC; and it was an old design even then.
I'm guessing most tech seems to last fairly well in the future as the junk that place was selling was centuries old in some cases but still considered valuable enough to someone.
6) Kinda glad we didn't meet whoever was in charge of the salvage operation. We don't need to meet every big bad and use up valuable plot time; just have them in the background as some world building for a bit of fun.
7) Saru made the right call demoting Burnham, but I wish he was a bit more authority driven and less nicey-nice to the crew. I know he's a friendly chap but he needs to start acting more like Picard than a friendly bartender.
They are his friends and family but first and foremost they are his crew to command.
The Admiral knows more about the Burn than he wants to admit. I've seen theories it was the Feds who caused it and they are not willing to admit it; or are hiding it. Personally I think this might be fairly likely but we'll see.
Other theories say it was the Terrans but that seems unlikely as their empire died a long time ago and I doubt they want to destroy another universe; they are conquerors above all else. A destroyed galaxy is no use to them.

I think Saru's problem as captain is that is he still in that transition phase from crewmember to captain. He was "one of the guys" now he is "THE guy" and he's thrust into this really messed up situation so he not only has to adapt to the big chair but he has to figure out how to navigate the new status quo and get his crew, his family, through it. He's trying to be the authority while also being the friend they need so they can adapt to their new time easier. If a starship ever needed a dedicated councilor, this is it.

I think that Saru's problem as captain is that the show orbits around Burnham, so he can't assert too much authority, or it would risk him becoming the star of the show. The writers are limiting his reach as captain. He can't be 'THE GUY', because that's Burnham's roll in this show. In TOS, Kirk was 'THE GUY'. In TNG, Picard was 'THE GUY'. In DS9, Sisko was 'THE GUY'. In Voyager, Janeway should have been 'THE GUY', but Voyager ended up being a true ensemble show, IMHO. In Enterprise, Archer was 'THE GUY'. In truth, from TOS to Enterprise, the casts were very much ensembles, orbiting around 'THE GUY', their captain. Discovery sought to change things up, and they have. Burnham is 'THE GUY' in Discovery, but the cast is becoming much more of an ensemble during Season 3, thankfully! We're used to the captain being the focal point, but that's not Discovery's intention.
I have not been a fan of Discovery, but in spite of the writing not being as good as I would like, I am, for the most part, enjoying Discovery Season 3. It feels more 'Star Trek' than the previous two seasons. I still don't like that Burnham just does whatever she wants. If the writers wanted her to be that character, they should have made her the captain! It's getting old, seeing her be insubordinate, over and over and over and over again! She should leave Starfleet and galavant around the galaxy with Book...doing whatever she wants to do, without making Starfleet look weak and ineffectual. I'm glad that she got demoted...AGAIN! She should have been discharged.

I think that Saru is doing pretty good I know through personal experience that to be a boss and friend is a hard thing to do you, cannot be both on the job.
It was good that also Burnham backed up his decision it will give Saru confidence to lead better

A this point it has nothing to do with being a friend she is constantly back mouthing her superiors and violating orders, I don't get it how she ever made it to Commander or XO on the Sehnzou.

It was good that also Burnham backed up his decision it will give Saru confidence to lead better
I also don't think this has anything to do with Saru being helped with leading better. He was the one who always weighed and went for logical options. Saru just was always overlooked at Captaincy, so its great he got the big chair finally and also doesn't hesitate to remind Burnham that he hoped she should've known better by now.
