I watched and liked it alright. The Protostar looks like a ship from Star Wars, influenced by Federation design language for the exterior of the ship. The interior is very much something out of Star Wars though. I hope that there's a good story to explain it's existence. The animation is very good, but it really doesn't feel like Star Trek. Like the ship itself, the story feels more like Star Wars. No hate on Star Wars...I like Star Wars, not including the Disney trilogy, but when I watch something called Star Trek, I'd like to be watching something that looks and feels like Star Trek. Putting that issue aside, I'm hopeful for a good and entertaining story. Fingers crossed!

Funny enough my 17 year old daughter said this also over it feeling like Star Wars in the 1st episode the ship will need some explaining hopefully we get that throughout the show.

My 10 year old also noted the similarities to Star Wars. He remembered to go look today for the new episode on his own though, so clearly it was good enough to capture his interest. The show has some nice visual work and the potential for some interesting storylines as it progresses, so looking forward to seeing where it goes.

One of the recent episodes introduced a Federation version of USS Dauntless. Curious as to how canon Prodigy is considered though as they're wearing the AGT version of the combadge but Picard shows they were still using the First Contact version during that time period.

There's some time travel element afoot which would explain a few things

the Protostar itself is only a couple of years old at most but its been abandoned for a number of years after being thrown back in time - so its new from the Federations perspective but older from the crews

but that scene according to the producers is set in the prime timeline in 2383, which still doesn't explain why the badges are different.

Trek has far from a good track record when it comes to consistency for uniforms. Mixing and matching with badges along with uniform sets frankly doesn't seem all that surprising. A lot of it comes down to real life practical stuff with the costumers, but given that such considerations wouldn't be applicable here in an animated series, it maybe suggests some other random factor(s) at play. Perhaps different garb for different ship mission profiles, or maybe something more random like "captain's choice" for uniform standards?

The lack of consistency for uniforms is one thing that drives me crazy about Trek under Kurtzman.

I'd like to go back to the uniform rules that were in play from 1987 to 2001.

Unless it was an alternate timeline or something weird. The Starfleet Uniforms were mostly standardized across all series and films. It's bad enough that I'm asked to suspend disbelief and accept that Discovery is playing by Tardis Rules. Simultaneously accepting that by the time Kirk takes command of the Enterprise, we're going to see a massive fleetwide technological regression.

Pick a uniform and stick with it. Not too much to ask. lol
