I know they sort of hinted about maybe shifting the style a bit, but from the looks of it they're keeping the revamped Enterprise, unless it's a placeholder to keep the final design under wraps.

Looks like we got Kirk in S2 of SNW already. Not seen anything indicating if this means Mount is only doing the one season or what,

Not sure about Wesley as Kirk only thing I have ever seen him in was The Vampire Diaries he was decent in that role if you are into what the show was. I guess time will tell and we will have to wait for the end of S1 to have an idea.

I suspect they're bringing the character in to function the same way as Pike and Spock did in Season 2 of Discovery rather than them intending it as an outright replacement.

We can actually do a bit of extrapolation here - it's always been accepted that Kirk was given command of the Enterprise in 2265. The viewscreen on Discovery when Pike's details are accidently displayed confirmed he was Captain beginning in 2250. The only TOS 2 part episode "The Menagerie" is set in 2267 and the events on Talos IV are mentioned to have occurred 13 years earlier, placing it in 2254. The Short Trek episode "Q&A" confirmed that Spock was assigned to the Enterprise in the same year, 2254.

Spock states he served under Pike for "..eleven years, four months, and five days" which would bounce us forwards somewhere into mid-late 2265 (based off a few of the earliest season 1 episodes) and would seem to confirm Kirk assuming command at that time.

The last solid mention of Kirk's career in canon pre-dating TOS was that he served as a Lieutenant aboard the Farragut in 2257 - there's no mention of him having another command prior to the Enterprise, nor as you said, is there any mention of it being his first either - so it's one of those "assumed" rather than confirmed pieces of lore.

However, there's a 7 or 8 year gap between those events that aren't covered so it's not outside the realm of possibility that he did have a stint in the chair elsewhere, so SNW may well be bringing new info to the table.

Then there's another obvious option to consider - maybe this is actually a shot of Mount and they've simply photoshopped the new guy into it.

But no, people have gotten so used to complaining about how nuTrek ignores lore, they now complain when a show fixes something that had the same people up in arms with the Kelvin movies...

Though the original has been deleted and I'm not going to repost it here to avoid attracting any takedown requests, there's a behind the scenes photo from SNW that allegedly shows a redesigned Klingon but it's not confirmed. The design on a male actor appears to be a blend between the TNG era Klingons and TOS ones as the ridges don't look as pronounced and the skin tone is lighter.

It may be another entirely new race that shares some similarity with the Klingons, so it's a case of wait and see.
