Historical Background
The Charleston is a new Obena-class starship, having only recently been constructed and left the confines of Utopia Planitia Fleetyards, her namesake comes from the ship lost at the Battle of the Hydra Sector, where the ship was lost with all hands preventing the Zephan Sovereignty and their Cardassian supporters from creating a beachhead within the Alpha Quadrant.
She participated in Jean-Luc Picard's detection grid during the Klingon Civil War, helping to curb a conflict that could have changed the balance of power within the Beta Quadrant. After this engagement, the Charleston would patrol the Romulan and Klingon borders until being reassigned to the Cardassian border in the run up to the Dominion War.
The Charleston served throughout the Dominion War with distinction, participating in several key battles throughout the Dominion War, including Operation Return before being nearly destroyed defending Earth against the Breen attack, after single handedly taking on a small squadron of Breen destroyers. This feat would mean she would see out the rest of the war in Dockyard 43 at Utopia Planitia.
The previous ship was an Excelsior-class, making an Obena class a fitting successor to that starship.
