This thread is for the pre and post discussion of the Season 4 premiere episode "Kobayahsi Maru" - this will be a spoiler filled discussion so if you've found your way past the warnings in the activity stream and the spoiler tag on the thread, this is your last chance to turn back, or at least it will be at the end of this first post. Season 4 continues from the events of Season 3, taking place in the 32nd Century in which the Federation has effectively collapsed and the galaxy has become something of a scavengers world, but there's now hope of rebuilding and repairing the damage suffered over the last 120 years. Alongside the regular cast, David Cronenberg as Kovich, Oded Fehr as Fleet Admiral Charles Vance and Tig Notaro as Jett Reno are all confirmed to be returning, though Notaro's screentime is reduced due to Covid travel issues at the time of filming. Ian Alexander as Gray Tal also returns and Chelah Horsdal joins to play the as yet unnamed Federation President, a character that is of Human, Bajoran and Cardassian ancestry.
With the mystery behind the Burn answered and a new source of dilithium secured, the Federation has begun the process of rebuilding. The Discovery, having spent much of its time assisting various worlds as part of this, visits a damaged space station to render aid, but whilst there, the ship discovers a new threat to the galaxy at large is waiting.

It's being moved back to Paramount+ - the kicker is it won't be available in the UK until 2022. I'll keep the episode threads going but basically we're out of luck as things stand.

First thing that strikes me about the promo shots is, 'where are all the red shirts?' It's a blue and yellow festival on the bridge apart from Burnham.
Guess we'll find out on Thursday.

I'm actually livid about this, especially as it's only announced 2 days before it was due to air.
There is no way in all the circles of Hell that I'm subbing to yet another streaming service just to watch Star Trek shows. If that means I'll never see them then so be it I guess.
I already pay for Prime, Netflix, Disney+ and occasionally NowTV; there's only so much money a person can spend on this stuff before it becomes farcical.
Streaming of TV was supposed to make it easier to access shows and films; but it's just going in the opposite direction with eleventy-billion different services flooding the market.
I hope this bites CBS in the arse to teach them a lesson.
So today I boarded the HMS Kodi to view the new episode of Discovery
Interesting start planet of human butterflies to use Bookers analogy with Discovery delivering Dilithium to other worlds as a gesture of friendship and goodwill.
Federation numbers have increased to 59 and they have reopened Starfleet academy with a new shipyard that is refitting 32nd-century ships with new modes of travel due to the issue that the loss of dilithium had caused, The new spacedock named the Archer Spacedock and the nod with the enterprise theme in the back was a nice easter egg.
Not sure what to make of the new President though she seems to not like Burnham.
It was good to see Saru and that they seem to be looking at sending him back to Starfleet somehow I suspect after the presedants evaluation dialogue with Burnham over looking for a test captain for the new Voyager that this may be where we will see Saru end up or as a Starfleet Acadamy lecturer/liason in some way though I hope its the Voyager myself.
If I had to rate the episode I would give it a 7/10 as a decent opening ep of the new season.

Don't worry about the President. She's just another person for Burnham to prove her superiority over by the end of the season. I'm sure that it will be played as though Burnham has grown in her position as Captain, but in the end it will just be Burnham proving her superiors wrong AGAIN!
Also, will these new Star Treks stop blowing up entire planets please! Not every problem needs to be so existential. So far, without Discovery, the Federation would have been defeated by the Klingons, all life in the galaxy would have been eradicated by a rogue Section 31 AI, the galaxy would still be suffering the fallout from The Burn, and now the galaxy will have to be saved from a planet killing gravitational anomaly! It seems that Discovery, and more specifically Burnham, is the most significant and influential force in the Federation's, no...the galaxy's history! Who knew that this group of emotionally needy teenagers trapped in young adult bodies would be so important to the future of life in the galaxy! I for one would never have seen this coming, but here we are...for the fourth season in a row!
So as not to be totally negative, I thought that the pacing and special effects were better than previous seasons. I also like the new costume options that were shown off in this episode. This was a better start to a new season, than previous season openers. I still can't say that I'm a fan, but I also can't stop watching.
To everyone who is angry over the loss of Netflix, welcome to the club! We Americans were saddled with CBS All Access/Paramount+ from the beginning. I feel your pain. I think that it was dirty for them to announce that news, just as Discovery was getting ready to drop! In addition, you have to wait until next year to even be able to watch it. That sucks! As Jestersmith has said, there are other options, should you choose to explore them.

To be fair I have always watched it that way as never had the patience to wait till Friday for UK Netflix to have it just I always had the option to rewatch on Netflix for better quality HMS Kodi through screens in 4K so all is good
