Enterprise showed the Andorians, Humans, Tellarites and the Vulcans signing the Federation charter. The Andorians are founding members.

Enterprise Season 4 had the Coalition of Planets, which was a precursor of the UFP and created in response to the Romulan drone ship shenanigans.

The Andorians appeared 4 times during the TOS era:

Journey To Babel - this Andorian that attacked Kirk was believed to be a surgically altered Orion. The head of the delegation mentions that while their people have been known to be violent, they've no quarrel with Kirk.

The Gamesters of Triskelion - The Andorian here is one of the Gamesters battle thralls.

Whom Gods Destroy - The one here follows Garth, though as the episode takes place in a psychiatric facility, they can't be relied upon to be entirely of sound mind.

The Lights of Zetar - The one seen here was deceased.

While they've popped up in the background during the movie and TNG eras, it wasn't until Enterprise came along that they got fleshed out and detailed.

Overall I've enjoyed this first episode. It is refreshing to have another self-contained episodic storytelling series option to compliment Lower Decks. While I've enjoyed all "nu trek" in their own rights, getting to look forward to another show to watch each week without knowing that I'm going to need to later binge watch the full season together to get the full storytelling effect is nice.

That said, Strange New Worlds overall is in the same tough scenario that Discovery initially found itself in for its first 2 seasons, in that the writers are trying to fit original storytelling into a period of time between Enterprise, TOS, and now Discovery's first 2 seasons too, with the added challenge of writing for several characters that already have a lot of established lore around them. Given this, it is no surprise that they are trying to stretch some aspects of that lore to provide breathing room for their own storytelling. I know not everyone is going to be happy about these kinds of choices, but I prefer to judge each show on its own merits and not focus too heavily on canon continuity. So long as the storytelling they are trying to do is enjoyable in its own right, I'm okay with bending previous ideas that have been introduced by other shows. If the changes are just for the sake of change with no narrative value otherwise, I might be more annoyed. I don't feel like SNW has pushed too hard on this latter angle yet, but I'm also keeping an open mind that they are likely setting up some things now to play out a bit later, as they've indicated that there will be ongoing storythreads across episodes for certain things like Pike's knowledge of his future, the Spock/T'Pring angle, and probably a few other character arcs.

That's in equal parts because TNG was supposed to explore new species, and in part because the makeup was so expensive. IIRC the moving Andorian antennae in ENT were all CGI.

Oh, okay, far. Point is though, I distinctly remember someone from the DS9 production team saying that cost was the primary factor why the Andorians never really featured in TNG or other 90s Trek.
