Hello Cadet, my name is Commander Ellis and I will be briefing you today for the simulation as a Starfleet Academy Cadet. This Simulation is designed to test you while you absorb the fundamental aspects of your training, and to prepare you for real encounters when you are assigned a station within a Starship. Make sure you meet all objectives to ensure you pass this sim.

The Starship you are aboard is the USS BIKO reference file: https://ufplanets.com/showthread.php...BIKO-NCC-50330 You are currently within an unknown sector of space long distance communications are down. Your food rations are used up and energy levels throughout the starship are sustainable. There are 2 known unexplored planets within your scanner range. One planet you can scan at present which I am bout to show you while the other you cannot due to some kind of interference....


Captain, here is the reading from the planet that isn't blocking our scanners... (sends readings straight to the Captain's chair)

So the day had finally come... the final test... the final simulation before graduating from Starfleet Academy. Jack was excited.
Sure, he had already seen quite a bit so far in his life and especially whilst serving the Marines, but this here and now was a complete different story. His later Starfleet career would depend on the outcome of this final simulation. He listenend to Commander Ellis, took the PAD with his instructions from her and nodded her way.

Only a second later the holodeck changed as the programme was initiated and Jack found himself aboard the USS Biko. He took a seat in the captain's chair studying the data he got from the science officer.

Alright, what have we got here? Toxic atmosphere, heavy radiation... what a nice place to be.
Science station, any idea what could be blocking our sensors?

Seems like atmospheric interference... perhaps if we head closer to the other planet our sensors would be strong enough to pierce it?


That atmospheric interference could be anything though? Is it really worth the risk to fly ourselves closer to something that may interfere with our vessel's systems? Maybe we should put on our environmental suits and go after food on this planet instead?


Well, that's for our Captain to decide isn't it? What are your orders Sir?

Jack thought about both arguments he had just heard.



Both of you have a point. I am curious about what's going on, too, because after all we are explorers. However, I am not fond of risking the ship's safety here in this weird environment. So I think we should stock up some food rations. Working is always easier without a growling stomach.

He looked at the comm officer.



Due to the fact that our long range communication system is not available either, I guess we cannot contact the people living down there, can we?

We can contact the people down there we just cannot contact any of our starports or starbases beyond this system. If you like I can attempt to-


Wait, Captain if they are at starfaring level I think the question we should be asking ourselves is should we make first contact? Also their atmosphere is primarily made up of Carbon Dioxide, and heavy radiation. We would have to suit up if we did go down there in order to properly contact them under our first contact protocols. However, if all we want to do is just jump down to get food maybe that's what we ought to do. If not this could be a world changing event for them and possibly take up alot of our time.


They could also already be reading us...

Jack wanted to bite his lip because he almost forgot about Starfleet's Prime Directive. His XO was right: this civilisation's tech level was "starfaring" and an enforced first contact would definetely mess up things.So contacting the people living down there was totally out of the question.


Thanks for the remark, Number One. Let us follow the original plan then and try to get some food. I just hope this dustball has something nice to offer.
Engineering, try to find a way to.. well "hide"... from their sensors. Shut down not neccessarily needed systems and switch to "Grey" if you must in order to go silent. Work together with our navigators and hide the Biko in a "shadow".

Jack took a deep breath. He had this feeling he would soon be seeing some action.


Alright, people. It's time to form an away team. Due to the interferences we're not going to beam down there so make a shuttle ready.

He looked at the science officer.


Lieutenant, I heard you're a biologist so I want you to come with us. Furthermore I need one engineer and two security officers. Prepare everything in order to stock up our food rations, grab your EV suits, arm yourself and get ready. I will be coming with you. Meeting you all in 20 minutes at the shuttle bay. Number One, you have the bridge!

Guys, there is a lot of radiation within the atmosphere... combine it with the levels of carbon dioxide and this planet is basically an oven about to finish cooking what's for dinner... holding steady at 44 Degrees Celsius at the moment. Glad we are wearing these suits.


Kind of Ironic with us looking for food. Why does this planet remind me of something?


Maybe we can find a cave with an uncontaminated food source?


That's the idea... provided we can stay unnoticed while we search.

Captain, just wanted to let you know we have moved ourselves near the planet's dark side of the 2nd moon. Our scanners indicate their monitoring systems are just outside of their range. We will hold here until you give us the word to rendezvous with you. Good luck...

It was a bumpy ride down to the planet's surface.


44 degrees? Yeah, that's quite warm indeed. Compared to Nukara Prime it's rather chilly, though. Have you ever been there? If not, don't...! Too many arachnoids and I CANNOT stand them.

He listened to his XO's report.

Alright... Helm, find us a nice spot for a sweet touchdown. You're right, somewhere near a cave would be ideal for our mission. Make sure to set your phasers to stun, people. Just in case.

Many thoughts went through Jack's mind. He had never imagined how intense the graduation simulation might be or become.


Okay, buckle up...!

Captain I have located a 4 kilometer long cave which is about 3 kilometers from here. We can set down there and look for fauna... mmmm... that's strange.


What do you mean strange?


The temperature... it's dropping rapidly!


Are you saying the temperature is dropping within the cave?


No... this entire region... it's already dropped 10 degrees Celsius from when we first entered the lower atmosphere!


Beginning decent now. Landing gears commencing. I'll try to park as close as I can near the cave.


Uh... is it... slowing down? If this temperature keeps going down hell we might need to land inside the cave!



No Lt. it's now dropped -15 degrees and falling! Captain.... I cannot believe this but this region... this planet may be experiencing some type of global event!


I knew it... I knew something was familiar about this planet. When we first entered the atmosphere... it's consistent even with the amount of carbon dioxide with levels similar to a planet after a nuclear war. There were many on earth that thought after WW3 that nuclear warfare could plunge the Earth into another Ice Age.


Yes! You are right there is high radiation here that could have been caused by nuclear fall out. And quite possibly the planet is trying to cool itself... this would mean that the levels we had could be very much incorrect as far as the average heat or high temperature. This could be the middle of winter here that is now becoming something much worse!


We have landed everyone check their gear once we leave out we cannot risk being exposed to the cold especially if it keeps dropping.

It's now -30 degrees Celsius. We don't have much time...

They had arrived on the planet's surface.. a planet that was behaving in a very weird way slowly transforming itself. Jack had never experienced anything like this before. He had read about these planetary phenomenons, but now he was part and in the middle of one. Sure, it this was "just" a simulation, but it felt ever to realistic.


Okay, everybody... be careful. Check your systems and watch out where you are treading. Lieutenant Nagata (Science), keep scanning for anything useful, cookable and... well... edible.

Ok guys lets go! Captain, do you want to take point or should I?

We do it together, Lieutenant. Four eyes see more than just two. You take the left flank, I take the right one. I watch your back, you watch mine. The rest of you, diamond formation. Make sure to cover each other, too. Estimated time: 30 minutes, I would say. I don't want to stay on this gigantic soon-to-be-popsicle longer than necessary.

The others nodded and Jack hit his communicator.


=/\= Winter to Biko, we are now inside a cave beginning our search. We are planning to have finished in about half an hour. I am sure you have observed this sudden planet's transformation, too. Can you give us any information about this from up there? Anyways, I hope you're having it a bit warmer than us! =/\=

He looked at his team again.

I don't know about the rest of you but I rather enjoy the fact that we are looking for actual food and not replicator food.


Replicator food is fine we just don't have modern replicators on our starship.


That's not what I mean.


I think I might know what she is referring to... over here! This might be exactly what we need... this fauna will definitely provide enough of what we need. At least until we can make it to the closest Starbase.


I don't get it... what are you referring to Kathy?


Replicator food is made by reconstituted feces...

There was a reason when I asked about this the guy just smiled and told me "You don't want to know..." before he put the food on my tray when I asked as a Cadet.


This shouldn't take more than 15 minutes everyone get as much as you can. Our ship's food matter synthesizers should be able to do the rest.


Captain, Biko is finally responding to you...


Captain, you have to leave now!! Our readings indicate what we would categorize as a Level 8 Super Hurricane heading your way!! It's packing winds of over 700 miles per hour and once it passes over you it will leave a sheet of ice more then 1 kilometer high! You have less than 10 minutes to get the hell outta there!


Captain if we leave now we won't have enough food to sustain us more than 2 or 3 days. We must stay at least 9 minutes more to get something adequate!


That won't leave us with enough time to leave!


Damn, all of this work just to have to leave it? *sighs* There has to be something else we can do??

Listening to his XO's report and looking at his team mates' desperate faces made Jack think.


This place is getting lovelier with each single minute we're here...! You all hurry up and continue to gather as many samples as you can. I don't want everything that we have achieved so far to be in vain nor will I allow that we will be buried here. We will find a solution. Like you I want some real food!

He hit his communicator again.

Is there a way to use our old lady's deflector abilities or systems in order to divert or redirect the storm? If not try to create a dampening field around our position "shielding" us so to say. Both will cost the Biko quite an amount of energy, but she can do it and you can do it, too. I'm counting on you, Number One. If you succeed I promise you all a nice, fresh and non-replicated Captain's dinner... cooked by myself! =/\=

Yes, I know... I should have mentioned before that I can cook. I will proove it once this is over.

He hoped his daring plan would work out well and that the Biko would be able to punch them all out of this mess. In less then one minute he would know...

I'm sorry Captain but we would need at least an hour maybe even more to prep the ship for what you are asking for. There is no way it could be done in less than 10 minutes...

Giving up is something I would like to avoid. On the other hand, I don't want to risk our lives down here in this ice-cave. We still have around nine minutes so let's go on collecting on the double. Whilst we´re doing this I want to hear your suggestions, too. No panic, no desperation. So.. Lieutenant Nagata (science), Lieutenant Walker (engineering)... your input please. We need to find a solution and I'm all ears.

We don't have much time tell us what it is!


Gloria, please patch me in with the US BIKO...

Captain, how can I assist you?


Commander Wiggins, what if you focused your phasers to create a wide berth enough to shield the area around this cave including our shuttle for 20 more minutes? That would give us enough time to get all the fauna we can and leave! You would just need to fire within the coordinates I just sent to you west of the cave!


I could give you up to 14 minutes before our phasers would be depleted.


That will have to do! We will just have to double time our efforts!


That could work but it would only give you guys a small opening to navigate the shuttle through the ice sheet to escape into the upper atmosphere. Are you sure it's worth the risk?
