It had been rumoured for a number of weeks now that SWTOR would leave the hands of Bioware to allow them to focus on Mass Effect & Dragon Age but it's now official. The guy that established them was himself from Bioware originally and Broadsword currently maintains Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot.

I don't believe it will as they've not announced any further server closures that I'm aware of.

They have been moving servers to the cloud though which is a good sign

It's not supposed to affect long-unused accounts but you may want to log in to just to be sure. Plus it's always good to keep the game updated.

There has been quite a few updates this year and it's better to get those updates under the aged server architecture those updates were built for than get them under a new architecture never attempted before by the game developers. Especially when the software is being handed off to a group with management that hasn't overseen the software before and some of the original developers are no longer around.

Just my opinion as a retired IT developer with 22 years developing and managing distributed software across three industries for networks and the Internet.

Touch my account, I'll get upset and go all rawr since I paid for the game long before the F2P stuff =P (I rarely login, last time was earlier this year to give my good buddy Mentioned User Chris Wilkinson his Mando armor from the store cos I had a bunch of coin thingies.

I'm half tempted to reinstall and log into SWTOR again just to look around again. I'm another one that played it a lot at launch until F2P, microtransactions, and paid expansion packs took over, but might check in to see if my army of alts are still out there anywhere.

must admit. had concerns when they said they were handing it off. but looks like it's much more to keep a team actively developing while bioware does mass effect/dragon age

certainly the pvp lag has vanished when i logged on this week. they've really done wonders with the backend mess it used to have. if i remember, a lot of the original code was done by a tiny indie dev team in a "turnkey" mmorpg dev environment called heroengine. it really was not a professional job at all. so it wasnt designed for the scale that it became when ea bought up the rights

they've been mitigating this ever since first launch, so the netcode urgently needed some attention

Ok, my nostalgia has been sated. Installed the launcher and it won't launch even after tinkering with various security and compatibility settings. Game uninstalled again.

I wonder how this hand off will affect SWTOR. I thoroughly enjoy the game but it seems to be lacking over the years. Hopefully this will reinvigorate the game. I hope that this will become their sole focus and make it feel a bit more polished. Time will tell.

My naivety is making me ask this but.. did they get rid of any of the microtransctions when they handed it off or remove that bloody hindering awkward XP nerf that F2P players get on their characters after a certain level?

I think it's unlikely that they plan to remove any microtransactions. I haven't played in a while myself but enjoyed the story every release, it's too bad it's been basically in maintenance mode for years now.

Broadsword is made up from people that were at Mythic Entertainment which created Dark Age of Camelot and EA acquired the company back when the Warhammer Online MMO was being developed. Now as far as changes go, I don't expect much since I bet The Old Republic didn't have a large player base anymore so my guess is that EA would have ended adding new content if they kept the game with BioWare.

As far as accounts go, I logged into my old Dark Age of Camelot account the other day and it is pretty much as I left it when World of Warcraft was released so I wouldn't expect anything to change with The Old Republic moving over. I think it just streamlines the content and works to fulfill EA's announcement earlier this year that they would be cutting staff.
