Heyallo created the more sensible ship builds thread, but I want to know what background, and traits everyone went for when they created their characters, as well as any reason as to why.
My character is a Diplomat, speech is my favourite sort of build, my second favourite is melee, so my second run through would be a Bouncer.
Next, my traits.
Empath - This one just fits with the Diplomat theme, no other reason.
Hero Worshiped - Not because I have a massive ego, but because he's a free crew member, and free is a great price! I can only suspect that he heard about the amazing treaties my character signed, and he's a massive political nerd or something.
Kid Stuff - I like the idea of having parents I can go visit, and have no issue sharing my money with them!

I actually took no traits this time around, mainly because there's a few things that Starfield doesn't exactly make clear at first (I'm looking at you lockpick minigame) and I just forgot to take any. I could have restarted but I decided to just press on.
My character has focused on laser weapons with commerce and the persuade skill when they don't need to blast everything in sight. I like to have a character that's reasonable but can dish out a curb stomping if they need to.
I have however made some errors with the skill system which, while it won't hurt them in the long run, it has started to cause a few immediate issues and made things harder - I've neglected crafting/research so I'm stuck on getting weapons upgraded at the moment beyond basics or adding Type B modules at the ship builder.

Mine unintentionally looks like Amos Burton from The Expanse now thinking of building The Rocinante for him thanks to Mentioned User Novalance sharing the video of a build for it the other day with me
I also went with Space Scoundrel with traits in Neon Street Rat, Hero Worshipped and Spaced.
The Adoring Fan Crew Member for Hero Worshipped is annoying though.

On Hiroyuki, I went Space Soundrel with no traits and actually maxed out stealth with ballistics and pistols first, am 56 on NG+(2) with him.
Thinking about doing a new char with traits, just not sure what yet heh

Name: Dr Shawn Walker
Occupation: Xenobiologist
Home world: Akila, Cheyenne System
Traits: Alien DNA, Freestar Collective Settler, Terra Firma
Bio:
Whilst Shawn was born in Akila City, his family didn't stay there long as they were traders, his father Ruan Walker, was in fact a long hauler of some note. It just so happened to be the port of call the family were trading in when Shawn's mother, Mari Walker, went into labour with Shawn. In truth Shawn spent his earliest formative years shuttling back and forth between worlds as his family eked out a life on trading ammo and raw resources. Shawn found being a child on a space ship difficult, he hated the smells of recycled air, and yearned for solid ground to play on, rivers to swim in and kids his own age to play with.
It wasn't until he was 8 that he had any semblance of a normal childhood, as he went to live with his grandmother on her Akila farm, before eventually getting enrolled in a local school. Despite starting late, Shawn was a quick learner, and developed an affinity with the sciences, especially biology and physics. He was also fascinated by the efforts locals would go to to defend themselves, and their properties, from the ferocious attacks of the Ashta. School was easy for Shawn, he learned quickly and was clearly bright, but his affinity towards beasts and their behaviours was soon picked up upon by his teachers. Shawn left school for a year to assist in the sale of his grandmothers farm following her death, and applied to join the Alien Sciences Department on The Clinic above Deepala in the Narion system - where he was successful and earned his doctorate in Xenobiology. Shortly after his graduation he learnt that his parents had been killed when the Crimson Fleet attacked and robbed them near to the Kryx system. The news left Shawn shattered and broken, he hated space even more than before.
It was during his time serving on The Clinic that Shawn was summarily dismissed from his post following a gross misconduct hearing. The issue stemmed from the space sickness that Shawn often felt whilst in space, in an effort to find a way to lessen the impact, Shawn began illegal studies and trials of fusing alien DNA to his own genome, the rationale being that Aliens have a greater tolerance for space and gravity drive distortion. The trail was somewhat of a success and did lessen the symptoms of space sickness he felt, but not before the senior lecturer of science discovered Shawn's research and reported him to the Administrator. Whilst he was dismissed from his post, his research was considered somewhat of a breakthrough and he left on good terms, free to return without ill effect.
Following his dismissal, Shawn took up a role with Argos Extractors to make some money in between jobs, with his first expedition taking him back to the Narion system and the moon of Vectera where he has been specially selected to help Supervisor Lin with a special mission.
