Fly her apart, then!" Captain Sulu's immortal words as he raced to assist the Enterprise A in Star Trek VI are a reminder of the excitement that comes when starships team up. Now, two Star Trek games are coming together for an exciting crossover for fans of both games!
Celebrate the upcoming, October 27th, physical release of Star Trek: Resurgence! The U.S.S. Resolute, the hero ship of the adventure game, will be available to Star Trek Online captains for free from October 12 to November 30. A Centaur-class refit and survivor of the Dominion War, this starship serves as a science vessel on the frontier of Federation space and would be a valuable asset to any captain's fleet. By claiming the Resolute, Star Trek Online players will unlock it as a new visual option for any of their Federation Light Cruiser variants.
Star Trek: Resurgence is a narrative-driven adventure game developed by ex-Telltale developers Dramatic Labs and is set after the events of The Next Generation. It features Captain William T. Riker (voiced by Jonathan Frakes) and Ambassador Spock in a story tied to events seen in Season One of TNG. Players take on the roles of the Resolute’s first officer and one of its lower decks engineers, making choices that will shape the course of the story and the fate of the galaxy."
In addition to the Resolute giveaway, players can also pre-order Star Trek: Resurgence from participating retail stores to receive the Star Trek Online Federation Elite Starter Pack for consoles and a free digital download of issue one of the Resurgence comic book prequel.

There are definitely similarities to the Ares from the Axanar series. I think it is part of her appeal to me.
I'd love to see the Ares in game, but I have a feeling Paramount would not be happy with that.

From my understanding, Cryptic are allowed to lift ships that appear in other Trek games and reuse them freely (so long as they remake the models from scratch themselves) as those are covered by the licence with Paramount, so I'd assume other devs can do the same in reverse.
However the Ares would be classed as a fan design in the grand scheme of things and would need a separate licence agreement, much like the Vesta did - and both Mark Rademaker & Cryptic appear to think it was more trouble than it was worth.
Leaving such an agreement aside from a moment, since Axanar attempted to profit from the brand themselves. I imagine Paramount would veto that idea before someone even thought of it never mind actually trying. They'd probably sooner tell Cryptic to pull the plug on STO before giving Axanar any degree of legitimacy.

I know there's no love for Alec Peters at Paramount and across most of the fandom. His film unfortunately had the side effect of getting the hammer dropped from CBS on other fan films.
But I've always held the belief there was ONLY one reason they dropped that hammer. Axanar was going to be in the same timeframe as Disco and actually bridged the gap between modern VFX and honoring the older visual style. The reaction from most of the fans was one that scared CBS. Other fan film projects had utilized crowdfunding to make their films and none of them were attacked the way Axanar was. Other fan projects had featured Star Trek alumni as well.
Axanar simply did Pre-Kirk Trek and the Klingon War better than CBS / Kurtzman. Because of that the hammer fell and now fan films are placed under ridiculous restrictions. Am I saying Alec Peters is a saint? No. But I do think his project was used as a scapegoat.
Also, for the record, I don't entirely dislike Discovery. I've watched every season and supported the franchise for better and worse. At least we got Pike and SNW out of season two. But I feel they should've respected the visual style that had been established and followed Axanar's example by bridging the gap.
I'd welcome further discussion. But that might be appropriate in another thread.

Other fan projects had used crowdfunding but the key rule Paramount had was so long as you weren't making a profit or using the funding to directly benefit yourself, you were OK.
Axanar flew in the face of that as according to what I've read, their own financial records incriminated Peter's as they showed he was using the money personally both to pay himself a salary and establish an unrelated to the project studio. That's what incurred the wrath of Paramount, things got messy in a hurry and while neither side came out of it looking particularly good, we are where we are today because of it all.
There are various rumours floating around about Peters these days but I've no idea what's true and what's hyperbole.

He's still trying to finish the Axanar project from what I've seen. But at a snail's pace and that's caused some frustration even from longtime supporters.
J.G. Hertzler is even involved as Captain Samuel Travis. Some of the footage they've released is remarkable especially for a fan film.
But I'd argue for the sake of playing devil's advocate. Peters and his project were the only one that got sued by Paramount. Thus, we don't really know if the Mignogna (hate referencing him for obvious reasons) or Cawley projects were doing the same thing. I'll also go ahead and say I have no evidence that says either party was. I know that James Cawley had / has a side gig as an Elvis impersonator and to my knowledge that is how he earns his living. As for Vic Mignogna, well his resume speaks for itself, and he was even in STO (thankfully he's NOT anymore). Clearly both were able to make money outside of crowdfunding.
Both of their respective studios offer tours. The New Voyages sets are officially licensed by CBS, and I believe this is how they're allowed to operate at a profit. The Star Trek Continues set tours are free on announced days, but they're vague on private tours, & they can be rented for fan films. But they are very careful to say they do not make a profit from them.
At the end of the day, the ones that really lost were the fans, and smaller fan productions. But not to hijack this thread any more than I already have.
The Centaur refit looks great, and I've already commissioned one on an alt. The adventures of the U.S.S. Colorado will keep me busy for a while.
