SIM 05A - SCIENTIFIC SURVEY

“Hello Cadets, my name is Commander Ellis and I will be briefing you today for the simulation as a Starfleet Academy Cadet. This Simulation is designed to test you while you absorb the fundamental aspects of your training and to prepare you for real encounters when you are assigned a station within a Starship. Make sure you meet all objectives to ensure you pass this sim.

Cadet Rawat, Advik - (SCI) Astrophysics and Quantum Mechanics

Your objectives consist of the following:

• Identify the phenomena
• Study and report it’s effect on the ship
• Study the particles and their interactions at Sub-atomic and Quantum level
• Measure the effects this phenomenon has on subspace
• Report on how to keep the ship safe in the area surrounding the phenomena

As you step onboard through the holodeck door you the computer says “You are onboard the USS Monitor, a Nebula class vessel exploring an currently uncharted area of space. You have been assigned bridge science officer on duty.” Then the holodeck fades around you you find yourself stabnding next to the chair for you station

Taking a seat you see that your monitors have both long distance and short distance scans on them. There is some evidence that ahead of you on your current heading there is an anomaly that may interfere with either normal space, subspace or both.



Before you can look any closer at the data the captain turns and ask you "Sciences, anything I need to know about out there or is it just a bunch of data for you to look over another time?"

As Rawat enters the holodeck he becomes more and more nervous. As the holodeck walls start to slowly disappear he tries to calm himself down; as the walls of the holodeck disappear he sees a large screen appear in front of him, the screen was titled "SCIENCE I". As he looked around the bridge he noticed it to be the familiar layout of the Nebula class science vessels. As he sits down in the chair next to his station. The captain asks him, "Sciences, anything I need to know about out there or is it just a bunch of data for you to look over another time?"
Rawat chuckles as he turns to face the captain and replies to the captain,"Sir, the dat-". A beep comes from the station as Rawat turns to his station to see that an anomaly has been detected. He reports to the captain ,"Sir, long range sensors are detecting an anomaly 6 AU directly in front of us." He adds," Sir, sensors are reporting this anomaly is bending subspace, I recommend we drop out of warp and move to investigate this anomaly."

"Thank you Science, Navigation take us out of warp and close to 6 AU's to the edge of the anomaly, Ensign Rawat drop them a note on where you think the outer most edge of the anomaly is. Ensign get to scanning once we reach 6 AU's. I want to know what you think is safe closest distance to this anomaly is. We are on a science exploration mission everyone, let's do some science.

As the USS Monitor drops out of warp and travels to the 6 AU's distance your console starts to fill with more information. You see there is a higher concentration of Tetryons (Subspace particles) than normal but the distorion of real space dosen't match up to the number of Tetryons you see. The energy levels across the board in this area are also higher than expected for the level of normal and subspace interference. Based on the energy levels in the area you see that the minimum reccomended distance in the book is 3 AU's but it is left up to the Science Officer on duty to set the distance based on thier best judgement. To get any further details the ships scanners will need to be alligned for certain articles such as particles, energy or cross planar barriers.

Rawat replies to the captain while working on the console, " Annnd, here captain coordinates sent to helm control" just as he completes his sentence he asks the science officer, "LT you might want to see this" just as the science officer comes he asks,"Yes Rawat, how may I help you? he replies,"Sir, the data doesn't make any sense, there is no real reason why there is such a high tetryon particle count. Sir, I suggest we stay here for a bit and find a reason for this phenomenon, eh?" The science officer looks at the data and thinks for a moment and replies,"I concur, good thinking ensign. Why don't you yourself ask the captain, hmm?" Rawat hesitates but turns to face the captain and says,"Sir, Asking permission for investigating the unusual tetryon emission."

"Go ahead, our mission is to investiage these sort of things after all. Ensign Rawat, I want you to run point on data analysis while the Leuitenant runs the senor settings. Inform them if you need anything adjusting. Helm stay put until the Ensign clears us for any closer than 6AU's and stick to what they say closely. Everyone else, keep a look out but I see no reason to go yellow alert or anything so if you need grab a snack while Science does some number crunching for us."

At the Captains words you see some crew members like Communcations officer and Deputy Tactical officer step out for a moment. You also see that any extra sensors managed by operations have been sent to the Leuitenants console next to you to control.


"Alright Engisn, I'm not really seeing anything on a broad spectrum check apart from the Tetryons. Subspace scanner show a small distortion but the pattern isn't what I would expect, sending over to you now."

The Sensor report appears on the screen and it shows a small tear in subspace that is causing the Tetryons to leak into real space. However the tear pattern is not consistent with what you have seen before. It seems almost like it's inverted from what you normally see though it could start to explain the extra Tetryon emissions.

To get more details you will either need to put the ship closer to the anomaly or set the scanner to a finer scanning detail.

As the data comes to Ensign Rawat's console he starts to again get nervous thinking to himself,"This is getting a whole lot deeper than expected than I originally thought but hey this is what Starfleet really is". After Advik analyzed the data he turns to the captain and says,"Sir, the LT and I have found the reason of the emissions; it is a subspace rupture but now the follow up questions is why is there a subspace rupture over here. Sir, to get a better reading I will require that we get closer, I think 1 AU forward would be enough.". He also asks the the science officer to calibrate the sensors for a more comprehensive scan of the anomaly.

"Helm take us in to 5 AU's from the centre of rupture, I don't like these extra Tetryons popping up around us for no reason. Ensign have you gotten any further at determining the minimum safe distance from the anomaly. I do prefer not annoying the Chief Engineer and breakign the ship tends to do that"

After the USS Monitor start moving at impusle towards the anomoly the Lieutenant informs you.


"Ok Ensign, starting to cycle through more comprehensive scans now. Begining on the EM spectrum, then a more broad scan for particles in case something else is out there. Let me know if you need anything else on that."

From looking at these more detailed scans you see that there is a set of high powered waves across the entire EM spectrum, however the diagram on the console infront of you has the waves coming out of the subspace rift creating a squahed sphere shape and then condensing back into a point on the opposite side. There are also lots of points where random bursts of gamma radition seems to result from. There is very little visible indication of a Subspace rift on visual sensors as well.

From the scan on particles you can see that there is multiple particles giving of Cherenkov radiation where the Subspace rift is and on the opposite side of the EM sphere. You also see that the system has found another particle which is initially classed as a Tetryon but then was reclassifeid as an unknown but similar particle. The total number of confirmed Tetryons on sensors have now dropped to below expected levels for a subspace rift of this size.

Due to this oblate sphere shape the emissions are being given out in the ship in general is very safe near this phenomena as the majority of emissions outside of this sphere are easily soaked up by the shield. However the energy levels inside the sphere are much denser than normal and the ship would not last long inside of it.

As the block of incoming data fill the console. Rawat finds out that the particles earlier thought to be Tetryons were a particle that he had never encountered before. As he makes a note of it and sees that the there is high levels of emission in the entire EM spectrum. He thinks to himself <i>Quite a simulation the academy has got here. Quite a simulation the academy has got here.He then checks the emission diagram and sees that the shape of the emission is in an oval shape. Another that intrigued Rawat was that due to the identification of the unknown particle the number of Tetryons are significantly lower than that of a usual subspace rupture. He reports to the captain.
“Sir, the particles we earlier thought to be Tetryons are not actually Tetryons but some other particle which I have never encountered before. The area around the rupture is filled with the EM radiation but the ship will be safe, the shape of the emission is in an oval shape. Our shields will be able to dissipate the radiation, but I won’t be so sure if we had to enter the tear.”
He then adds,
"Captain,to get a better look at these particles. We'll have to move a bit closer. I will send the co-ordinates to the helm.
He then again turns to face his console and sends the co-ordinates to helm and continues to check for any new reading from the sensors. He then asks the LT,
“LT, can you note the properties of these mystery particles and send it to my console?”
