If someone comes here and signs up and doesn't tell their age, then {UFP} is not responsible. Why not just leave it at don't ask, don't tell?
it this quote the reply would be ignorance is not a defence, As has been stated before there data protection laws and child protection laws which need to be concidered here, I am studying to be a teacher and we have to have check to make sure we are fit to do so, now i know there is difference with it being an on line community and not actual contact being made, but what if a parent felt that a conversation or topic line was not appropriate for there child and complained?? or they took it further to maybe the law? where do we stand, simply saying thay didnt tell us there age isnt a defence in the eyes of the courts. I know im taking this to the extream point but its better to preper for the work and hope for the best than being blind sided by something.

I believe an age restriction would be a good idea, however it should leave leeway for those "accelerated" younger members who have a good sense of maturity. If a member was under a given age they should have the ability to prove their maturity in co-ordination with a trial period where they're later evaluated. I don't think that restricting the flow of members is a good idea, but we need to take certain precautions to ensure the maturity and quality of members that we allow. (May I remind you, that just because someone is old enough, doesn't mean that they're mature.)

A system couldn't give leeway to certain members with a trial period and then work. You can't know straight off who deserves it and who is mature enough and who isn't by their application alone, so you essentially have to give everyone a trial period. This ultimately means, you might as well just keep with no restrictions at all.
The only thing I can suggest would be to have some sort of maturity exam or something along those lines, which I think is also a bad idea, since you're just adding more work for the player to do, just to join a fleet which would be much easier to do elsewhere. The more work you give someone, who hasn't even joined the fleet yet, will probably not bother and will shrink the new member percentage dramatically.
Secondly, if such an age restriction were to be imposed, it would automatically detract the maturer, younger possible members of the fleet since they most probably won't feel welcome and the limit itself will deter them to another fleet. I don't think a trial period would bring that many in, even if it is advertised to them. Since, a player, just wants to join a fleet and play the game, not jump through a 1000 hurdles when they can jump through 0 with other fleets.

sort of maturity exam or something along those lines
I don't think anyone here is qualified to make that assumption based on anything other than their subjective experience with someone. And that alone is not enough to validate this measure.
Only if an objective, qualified and experienced expert could provide an answer using academically proven objective tests, I would be willing to accept any form of exam on the subject.
Would the person with a Ph.D. in psychology, and post-doctorate's in education, (ortho)pedagogics and developmental psychology please stand up?

Excuse me? I thought this was an open discussion? For the record; I voiced my opinion about the notion of introducing an exam to determin maturity. Not on your view whether or not to implement it.
And to put it sharper, this discussion is not about what I think of your opinion, but about the issue. I'm keeping that very clear. I

Age restriction is really difficult to determine because the maturity factor is so much more important. No one wants an immature ideot on their team but unfortunately it's always going to come down to the individual, even if they're 25 with kids of their own. Everyone deserves the right to prove their worth, then if they dont stack up they get let go.

OK well I think the consensus is quite clear. With that in mind I'd like to move the debate into the realm of age restricted areas or subsections within STO.
Would this be worth/right pursuing?

I personally don't feel that age restrictions of any type are necessary within our fleet. I do not support any type of age restriction for any position in any division, regardless of importance or power. As many have said before, positions' requirements of age limits do not accurately define either a level of maturity, discipline, or availability. I would however, support a rank based restriction. With our new rank progression and academy system, I do believe that any member who is able to successfully pass the "academy" CORE training courses should be a valid candidate for STO positions.
I'd also like to note that (unless this has been previously denied) there is a possibility that Star Trek: Online, like many other MMORPG's, will impose some type of age restrictions on those who play.

Think of this idea less to do with maturity and more to do with choice. Just as we would break people into areas based on player style, some people may prefer to be in the company of those of a similar age.

IN my opinion even if ST:O puts an age limit in place the young people who want to play will find a way. Most parents r to wraped up in everyday life to police there young. It should not be the {UFP}'s policy to limit by age at some point it should be the parents responsibility.

Idealistically it should be the {UFP}'s responsibility as well, but I don't want to create a discussion about this right know.
I don't want to repeat what I have said, and what many people have said, but the most logical, practical and profitable way is not to establish any kind of age restrictions. If a immature person(lets say Bob) joins, then it can be easily detected by other members, and they can easily avoid Bob getting any important positions. If he becomes more mature, the issue can be reconsidered.

you do of course realise there is no way to prove age, anyone can lie about their birthdate.
