Munching on this idea this morning, STO has always said it could happen as becoming a playable Romulan, but what if they made it a 3rd faction, would it be possible?

I did a olil research this morning to see if it could be done, I would like to hear your opinions, I am putting a poll up (if possible)

What race would they have to choose from?

1. Romulan (Obviously)
2. Reman (another Obvious)
3. Hirogen (I guess, but really? I never seen a female before)

Race ideas from other people

1. Cardassian (I can see this race, but allied with Romulans?)
2. Vorta (Post Dominion? Again I don't see this with Romulans)
3. Jem'Hadar (The Alpha's, maybe but how would you make one a female, or a science officer? lol)
4. Breen (same reasons as Jem'Hadar imo, not possible)

While I do see it a cool opportunity, They need to put a lot of work into this to make it all fit, merging previous popular cannon Factions isn't the best way to go. I guess that would be trying to make another "Typhoon Pact".

Starship, What kind would we have?
Well lets just start with the Romulans, which We have already in the game, so lets point out the obvious

• Mogai Escort (Valdore) - A T3 ship, possible refit/retrofits for T5
• D'deridex Battleship aka Warbird - Definatly a T4 ship, and T5 refit/retrofits
• Scimitar - Seriously why NOT have it? Obviously a T5 Ship (Cannon version)
• Bird of Prey - Perhaps a starting ship

some other Romulans ships, based on ST games:

• Talon aka Lanora (scout ship, Possible Science)
• Falcon (Cruiser)
• Kestrel (Cruiser)
• Strike (Assault)
• Veles (Science)
• Griffin (Assault)
• Raptor (Assault)
• Draconarius (Assault)
• Hawk (Cruiser)
• Shadow (Science) - My Personal Fav of these non-cannon ships
• Venator (Assault)

This is the majority of research I did for the Romulans as a playable race, however there is others who actually have made a proposal to make a 3rd Hybrid Faction.

What is your opinion? I would love to see some replies on this from the {UFP}

Weren't the Romulans always a xenophobic culture based on the Romans? I'm not sure how other races would come into it.

Exactly, although STO has hirogen involved in an alliance, I guess anything is possible, but Dominion? Breen, Cardassian? no way! (although cardassian did make an alliance Pre-Dominion War)

I don't see any way that Cryptic could make a Romulan faction with the story line as it stands. Let's review the basic story line (I don't get too detailed with this sort of thing, too much info):

Romulan Empire all but destroyed in the wake of the Hobus supernova
Tal'Shiar forms alliances with various other bad-guy factions to attempt to rebuild the Empire
New Romulus founded with intent of reuniting with Vulcans and to forge new alliances with the Federation and KDF

So with those three things in mind, any playable Romulan faction would be incredibly weak. There's no sense of identity, no military might, no... oomph. Sure, the Tal'Shiar will always be an interesting sub-faction of the Romulan Empire, similar to the Rebels of the KDF, but that's not enough to build a whole faction from.

I predict that we'll see an extension to the New Romulus story line, with a reward at the end allowing you to make Romulan playable characters (regardless of faction). I imagine we'll start to see Romulan bridge officers first, probably again as rewards for completing tasks or story lines.

Ah, but a Romulan Commander could help shape the new empire by helping build relationships and knock out threats. It could be a faction of rebuilding, not defending. I could see some great plot elements in a Romulan faction (aside from my own extreme love of the Romulan side of things).

Totally have to agree with Caymen, this is a great opportunity to have a very forwars thinking storyline... Heck, depending on how they do it the Romulans could end up being more 'humanitarian' than the Federation seems to be simply out of the sheer need for numbers, resources, and their underdog status.

Plus flying a Warbird would be pretty cool

There is a Romulan version of the D7 Battlercruiser
There is also the Talvath class Science Vessel from Voyager.
There is an Interceptor class as mentioned in DS9.
The Drones seen in Enterprise would probably be Carrier pets like the Scorpion fighters.

Keep in mind that there are two separate factions of Romulans.

The New Romulan Empire get along with the Remans, the Romulan Star Empire does not.

The government this theoretical new faction is based on will determine stuff like playable Reman or playable Hirogen, which should be mutually exclusive.

As well as who the leader would be. The STO Infographic shows that Ms. Crosby also did voice work for Sela. Since she was not present in the Anniversary Episode, Sela must coming along somewhere else fairly soon.

There are many ways that Cryptic could pull off a Romulan faction but its not so much a "could they" but a "will they try" and I belive they will. Not only is their teaser at the end of the 3 year trailer and the sub site "March Beneath the Raptor's Wings" so Romulan that it hurts, but I belive that it means a playable form of Romulans in some form, due to the "March" part of it seems like meaning that they server some Romulan faction. Also the fact that Season 8 has be called "the closest well get to releasing an expansion" by many Devs. So Season 8 launchs in may, and so does this "March" tease.

So mabey May will bring Season 8: Wings of the Raptor, includes 1-20 Klingons, some form of a Romulan playable faction, new ships, missions, lead into S9 with the level cap increase, what ever the new system that may be the Romulan faction instead of something like a new Starbase/Rep system, and much much more. I know I am giving to much hope to Cryptic but this may be the turning point since they have recovered from the Atari pick up and sell off, the F2P translation, the firings and rehirings, and such. But with things coming out faster and in greater numbers I have hope. Not to mention good faith from the Year 3 mission being so good and one of the most Trek like missions that the game has seen.

So let just sit back, wait and see, and enjoy the ride because the devs will be going through with what ever it is no matter what.

The current Rep system would need to be modified. A Romulan does not need to be accepted by the Romulans to get Romulan Gear as they already are a Romulan. I wonder what they will have. Maybe a Federation Rep to get a MK XII Aegis or something?

So it woulnd't be a good idea, in my opinion, following the original history of the past centuries of Star Trek.

In the end it's a Science Fiction universe set in an MMO... they really could do anything.

I have to honestly assume it actually means playable Romulans. As to a faction? Not sure, but I can't see any PR guy worth their salt letting that poster go up without knowing players will expect it to be a playable faction after all this chatter.

People being disappointed is going to happen no matter what you do with an MMO, I'd just hate to see that many disappointed.

same could be said about klingons, but if you follow lots of his work, such as andromida, he has a special place for those who have lost everything they held dear. Romulans fall in that category. They deserve the chance to rebuild, ally with one who may have been enemies.
