So for what is probably the third or fourth time, I'm trying to give DS9 a shot. I love all the other trek series, but I could never get into DS9.
It's always been a bit to much of a... space opera. I like the idea, most of the characters, even some of the tech. I like the idea of a whole other world, so to speak, in the gamma quadrant. Instead of just the Federation and those in the alpha/beta quadrant.
So far I've made it to season 3, episode 1. It's picked up a bit, and I can't say I love it or hate it. But it's ok.
I know so many people loved DS9, and I probably don't like it because I love Voyager. So many people I know liked one and hated or at least disliked the other.
Does anyone else feel the same way about anything I said? Is it a space opera, or maybe it's to slow for me. I'm not sure. What are your thoughts?

If you made it to season 3, things will get way better (though i have to say that when i last watched DS9 complete also season 1 and 2 grew on me). Great series.

Season 3 is definitely where DS9 picks up but it is good that you watched Seasons 1 and 2 as they do lay some important ground work with regards to the Bajorans and their relationship with Starfleet and the Federation.
With the exception of Enterprise, DS9 is the only Star Trek show to really have story arcs that take place over several episodes (with the occasional exception in the other series but most of which are two part episodes) but each episode should still be sufficiently self contained that it tells its own unique story.
If you have made it to Season 3 I would recommend you keep going.

Echoing above, s3 is where it gets much better. One of their biggest early criticisms is that they were stuck down on a station but as you've seen they now have their own ship too, the series feels like it loses a lot of its limitations throughout 3.

To me DS9 is like TNG, It was slow in Seasons 1 and 2 and then starts to pick up in Season 3 and then hits it's stride in Season 4. Like so many have said before if you made it to season 3 then keep going it gets better in Season 4 and on. In fact even Voyager, in my opinion was the same way in that it was slow to start and around season 4 it got better. TNG and DS9 are my personal favorite but I also like Voyager and TOS. I could never really get behind Enterprise. What i didn't like was that they went back in time and, once again in my opinion, messed up many things that appeared in "later" years.

Most shows start off slow, the good ones just make sure to grow and not stay slow forever, I like character building and backstory, that's what I find interesting. I'm just going to put it out there that I am not overly interested in the space battles! That's not to say I dislike them, but to me, it's the dialogue that makes something interesting or not and I did like Deep Space 9, not as much as Voyager or TNG, but yeah.
It gets very action heavy at times, which is what attracts some people to DS9 I think and the plot is very stationary, while you see other worlds and they have a ship, it's all still very central. Whereas all the other Star Treks have a different story most episodes, you do have some reoccurring plots (like the Kazon in Voy), but it's often something new.

Just to add another voice to the choir: You've made it to the turning point. Season 3 is where the series found its footing and season 4 is where it started to hit its stride. I'm not sure how you feel about Mirror Universe episodes, but there are many of them spread throughout DS9. I'm not really a fan, so I tend to skip them; you mileage may vary, of course.

Strangely enough, ds9 is my second favorite behind TNG. I would also agree with others that you hang in there. The end of season 3 really sets up a great arc for season 4 and beyond and for me was much more interesting and enjoyable than any of the other facets of the series.

Too boring for me. Perhaps if it served as a recurring miniseries over the years it would have been alright. Like TNG and Voyager, too much Treknobabble, too much talk, too much of a reliance on technology not enough moral dilemmas or even actual exploration, and too nineties for my taste. Those series felt dehumanizing in a way.

I hated DS9 and all their story arcs. I watched TNG and Voy when I caught it, so self-contained episodes were the way to go. (Also applied to X-Files, when they got all Serious Bidness I quit the series completely.)
Ain't nobody got time for that!
Once DS9 ended and I had a chance to actually catch sets of episodes, I liked it. Most of my favorite characters are from DS9 - Bashir & Miles and Bashir & Garak, particularly.

DS9 is by far my favorite Star Trek TV series. I loved the characters and the relationships they all had, particularly Quark and Odo. I think if you give it a chance and watch the first few seasons you will really start to like it. It really gets good around season 4 and then with the dominion war stuff in the later seasons it's very entertaining.

Ive always enjoyed it from start to finish. But its always been frustrating once the Dominion is introduced officially for things to kick off with them. There was times where I felt there could of been more episodes building up the tension and lead up to the war.

I liked DS9, but I wish they had never introduced the Defiant. The space station setting was what made DS9 different from TNG and Voyager (both of which overlapped broadcast dates). It seemed like the show started on an isolated outpost, but come season 4 the writers just panicked and had to drag in Worf and the Defiant and far too much CGI.

My recollection is that season 3 took me over year to watch. It was the hardest season to hold my interest, but once season 4 started, I finished the entire series in about 6 months.
