Let me state up front. I hate PvP. Period. And, yes, there is a reason. I do not have, nor do I really care to have, the most powerful ship in the universe. My playstyle is more closely alligned to PvE and building ships that, while not 100% canon, are pretty darn close. As primarily a Federation captain, I fly Federation (translated Earth) ships. While some of the other species ships look pretty kewl, I'm seriously doubting anyone from Earth has ever actually captained a Breen ship. I exclusively use phaser beam arrays. Now that I have the option, they are blue as they should be....... OK, enough of that. By now you can understand my self-appointed limitations will never let me have the most powerful ship in the game. (As a side note, I have no issues with those who do thrive on seeing how much DPS they can squeeze out of their ship... that's their playstyle and I respect that.) So, yes, I hate PvP.
What does all of this have to do with the Khitomer Games? EVERYTHING!
I love the Khitomer Games. I have participated in both events to date and have no intention of dropping out now.
You see, the Khitomer Games require every captain to fly a comparable ship. There are minor tweaks and such we can use, but the allowable ships and equipment make every ship fairly equal. The games come down to three things:
1. Strategy- Yes. You have to actually think and plan to be victorious. You cannot rely on your presets and superior equipment to do your work for you because your equipment is no longer superior and your presets are pretty much useless.
2. Teamwork- Without teamwork, you will fail. Teams are given time to strategize, but they must then implement that strategy. Each team is only as strong as it's members are willing to play as a team. There's really no room for Lone Wolf's here.
3. Luck- While I couldn't give you an example of how luck played a role, it is my belief that when almost all other things are equal, a little bit of luck can definitely make the difference.
OK, while I really didn't want to, I'll throw in another one....
4. Skill- While the current format greatly limits abilities and such, it doesn't hurt to know what you're doing. Essential? Nah. Helpful. Yes.
To conclude, you joined a fleet for a reason. For most, it was to join together with others in something incredibly fun. That's exactly what the Khitomer Games are. Of course, you won't know unless you actually give it a try.
What I really need is a cupholder and a couple of Advil.-Quincy Taggart

I totally agree with you! With clear rules as in the Khitomer Games maybe PvP has a new chance to grow. I'd love to compete in more formats like that.
And some off-topic: I'm really interested in your ship build, Stormy, because that is exactly the way I like to play this game and I'm always trying to improve my build.

I feel exactly the same! I always fly Starfleet ships and never stray away from canon with weapons etc, whether it be Fed, Klingon or Romulan - love playing that way!

Aw, Stormy, this brought tears to my eyes. I've got the same attitude about canon builds that may be sub-optimal; that's my style as well.
Been thinking a bit about the Games, and about the last time I enjoyed PvP this much, which was when I played semi-competitive paintball, just before pro teams with sponsorships started taking over the circuit (about 25 years ago, now). Just in case bits of the formula appeal to anyone:
A friend of mine owned a paintball field primarily because he wanted to have a tournament team that emphasized proficiency and sportsmanship. There were a lot of people on the team (known as the Huns), so it was broken down into squads, and each squad was the right size for a tournament team, plus maybe one or two more for spares. Each squad had a name and an identity (Magnum Regime was the most serious competitive team, the Wild Bunch were well known for being the most sportsmanlike team ever), and played together on a very regular basis, so they got to know how everyone in the squad played and how to work as a team. We'd turn out for rec play as often as we could, play with our squads if we could, and swap players around as needed.
When we went to tournaments or hosted tournaments, we'd field as many tournament teams as squads would attend, and fill in where we needed to, so if a squad was a member short, someone extra from another squad would fill in. We'd compete against each other fair and square, but whoever won the actual tournament, so long as it was a Huns squad taking home the trophy, we were pretty happy.
Other paintball teams/fields tended to follow a similar formula, so different tournaments in the circuit were sponsored by different fields. If you were hosting, you might be reffing that day instead of playing, but some of your squads would play as well.
As mentioned, about the time I stopped playing, pro teams were starting to take over, winning tournaments through sheer sponsorship dollars spent (imagine a four person team that started firing the moment they stepped onto the field, and just kept hosing paint until the competition was out). Our field's response to that was to host a couple of low tech tournaments: single shot pump pistols with ten rounds and no CO2 tanks, cartridges only. Those were a lot of fun: common equipment baseline, put everyone on the same footing, much like the rules from the last Games, which is why I'm thinking about it. (Another fun formula we tried was Wild West: no ammunition hoppers, only one ball in the gun at a time. It was hilarious.)
So, nice to reminisce, but does that sound interesting? Form squads/teams, have a regular PvP event weekly with an emphasis on fun and sportsmanship, and possibly talk to other fleets about the idea (they play in our tournaments, we play in theirs). Just throwing that out there.
