EPISODE DISCUSSION
Call to Arms
Original Air Date: 16 June 1997
Series: Deep Space Nine
Episode: 5x26
SUMMARY
Sisko attempts to prevent more Dominion ships from entering the Alpha Quadrant by mining the wormhole;
Gul Dukat responds by launching a massive assault fleet against the station.
"He's letting me know... he'll be back." - Weyoun and Dukat, in regards to the baseball Sisko left behind in his office.
DISCUSSION
What did you think of "Call to Arms"? Did you agree with Sisko that is was necessary to start a war with the Dominion to save the Alpha Quadrant. Should have Starfleet send reinforcements so they could hold the station? Was Deep Space Nine ready to face a Dominion Fleet?

I enjoyed this episode, in special how the self-replicating mines came together.

I also enjoyed episode the start of long war with dominion.
The Sisko had no choice he needed to mine wormhole becouse dominion would send constant reinforcements to Cardassia and then they could destroy Federation easily.About reinforcements Starfleet should send few ships to defend Defiant and then when minefield is in place they could retreat becouse they wouldn't be able to defend the stanion they need a lot of ships for defending it.

in reality given the gravity of the situation and the necessity of keeping DS9 in Federation control, there should have been a permanent fleet deployment presence there of 5-10 ships in the event of something happening to prevent the loss of the station - imagine the amount of damage that would have been done to the dominion fleet if they were caught in a flanking position by the station and a detachment of ships? They would have set the dominion back by quite an amount!

Sisko pretty much took a military decison to save the federation planets, else the Dominion could've easily taken over federation space with the easy access of the the wormhole. Him blocking the wormhole at least gave them a fighting chance. I agree with him deploying a mine field, which took the Dominion long enough to figure out how to undo, just enough time for him to grab the station back. DS9 was after all, the strategic point during the war.

This was a fantastic episode that I still enjoy watching to this day. Given the political sensitivity and moral issues around laying mines, I found it interesting to see how it affected both sides during the conflict.
I also liked this episode as it really elevated the relationship between Sisko and Dukat, which for me was a highlight of the entire series.

I loved the episode! Was great to see it happen, and whilst DS9 was lost, it was a tactically sound decision to block off the wormhole and destroy key Dominion shipyards. It was a great way to start the Dominion War off, especially as nothing had been anything close to a war in other Trek series, and the cliff hangar, oh that cliff hangar. Dukat saying the phrase quoted in the main post and then the shot of Sisko meeting up with the massive Federation fleet - just great!

This was the first time it really felt like a war movie. Everything felt real, intense and then to lose the station, which I thought the writers wouldn't allow, really got to me. All the while, I'm not really a DS9 fan haha
