TNG has already been Remastered, but they said that doing to DS9 and Voyager what they did for TNG would be way too expensive and time-consuming because they didn't do a 35mm negitive cut of the shows for storage because producing the special effects would be cheaper to make if they were made for the lesser quality/Broadcast NTSC/PAL resolution and in CGI in most cases.TNG didn't have this issue because its Special Effects were shot in 35mm, with some exceptions for low quality CGI, in the case of "Datalore", or VFX mistakes like the Phaser shooting out of the Torpedo Tube in "Darmok".

I don't get why they think it would be expensive when this short clip was done mostly by one guy in his free time. I don't understand what companies have against paying people like this to work on the effects in their spare time.

It would be expensive because they would have to totally re-do EVERY SINGLE SFX shot for the entire series. That's 176 episodes of DS9 and 172 of Voyager.

Every time a character walked in front of a window, every time a phaser is shot, every time they went into a holodeck/suite, every time a changeling... changed, and so on and so on ad nausium.

It was doable with TNG because all the SFX was shot on 35mm and then converted to NTSC/PAL videotape for broadcast, the majority of the SFX work was already done for them and it was only a matter of upscaling to 1080p. That wasn't the case with DS9 and Voy. They shot in 35mm, yes, but then they converted it to NTSC/PAL videotape and added the SFX to that format, at a lower resolution, as a cost-saving measure.

To re-do everything would be a monumental task for a post-production team, working full-time, for years (as they did for TNG), for both DS9 and Voy.

Add on top of that, the entirely justifiable high price of the early TNG Remaster Blu-rays didn't help much with sales, and that would also keep CBS/Paramount from giving DS9/Voy.

That one guy may have been able to do that one sequence, but it probably took him weeks to do.

If they're going to redo the effects, I'd like to see more maneuvers instead of mostly 2D attacks.
