I can only agree to this.

I would have loved it if they'd decided to continue after Voyager instead of trying another prequel. I was far more excited when I saw the Axanar trailer for the first time, but let's all try to give Discovery a chance. We were all waiting for the return of a Star Trek series for a long time and should be thankful that it is finally happening.

I'll give it a couple of episodes before I judge it. My only "gripe" so to speak is doing a show with modern technology but setting it in the past. Say what you will about Enterprise as a TV show but at least they had old school tech designs. Discovery has a holo-viewscreen, not even the Enterprise-E had one of those. 10 years before Kirk yet has a viewscreen more advanced than a ship that won't even exist for over 100 years.

Okay I stand corrected but even then my point still stands in that the Enterprise-E has that display. Voyager, the Defiant the Enterprise-D and every other Starfleet ship we've seen had an actual viewscreen and yet Discovery which is 10 years before Kirk so a good 100+ years before the Enterprise-E, also had one.

So either where did Discovery get it, or why was it unusual on the E in the 24th Century when they were using it 100 years before that. Especially when holotechnology would clearly be better than an actual viewscreen, safer as it's just a projection. It still makes no sense in universe wise. From either the they 100 years ago perspective or from the why did they stop using it, as they had clearly mastered it 100 years before the E and if anything holographic technology would have improved over that 100 year timespan so that at the very least Voyager would of had one too since when it launched it was the most advanced ship in Starfleet at the time and that was before the E, either way it makes no sense beyond the fact that in today's world we can do it on TV and it looks cool.

    That's all I'm saying.

Take it like this, TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager are the Star Trek main time line. Anything else they made after that, for me, are each their own timeline. (yes i put Enterprise because even if they did aired episode with the TOS feel, the console we're still more advanced).

I find that doing shows before TOS is a mistake. They should try and continue the story after voyager and the movies.

That's how I view the J.J movies. I enjoy the J.J movies as a standard sci-fi adventure in general and from the Trek point of view as an alternate timeline. So I guess if I look at Discovery in the same way it won't bug me as much.

I do agree with you that doing shows before TOS is a mistake and personally I would love to see them go back to the original timeline and post Voyager and Nemesis but then again at the same time, seeing what they've done so far, I kind of don't. I like the J.J movies because they're an alternate timeline, if they were original timeline though I wouldn't so at least in my mind it's okay because the original timeline is intact and I can separate the two.

They're okay but at the same time all the movies so far have been more action and shooting, less diplomacy and a more perfect society, which was Gene's vision of the future, they haven't go there yet and it kind of pee's on Gene's vision in some ways in my opinion, but like you said it's an alternate timeline.

However if they kept that up but moved it back into the original timeline and didn't fully go back to how that universe works, then that seperation is gone so if they did it right and actually honored Gene's legacy and continued his vision then I'm all for it, if they didn't and kept going the way they have been but in the original timeline I personally would hate that and would rather they stick with the alternate timelines, but that's just me.

@VOX they had on the defiant briefly communication via holograms (remember Eddington?)
    https://youtu.be/XGcAbI-4_io?t=1m58s

You can see the holographic viewscreen being activated in one of the movies with the sovereign class ( i think in nemesis).

The new trailer suggest very strongly that it's another alternate timeline.. I, personally, find all of the alternate timeline movies and now the discovery trailer completely ridiculous..

    Okay,

First and foremost I am excited to have a new trek series airing. Secondly, it has got to be an alternate timeline, the Klingons have the most crazy looking ridges I have ever seen. Remember when Klingon's didn't have ridges?

As far as the general feel for the show, I am already slightly disappointed in it, primarily because I feel that trek isn't moving forward they seem to have their priorities on defining a history that is sort of known as opposed to one that is not. There is a huge gap of time after the TOS movies and leading into TNG that they could have played with. Trek in itself about "discovery" so why not discover what the future holds? The prime timeline is already several hundred years away from our own, so why not just throw us a few hundred years after that?

To clarify on this point I remember watching TNG when I was little, and I always was looking forward to what type of new technology they would show us or what crazy off the wall scheme Geordi would use to get the enterprise up and running again. I feel that they are either 1) holding themselves back or 2) lack the sort of creativity the other series had, including ENT. Pre-TOS has been done before so why keep re-hashing the same old ideas, that is my biggest gripe about the whole ordeal.

Again, I am excited to have a new Trek series, I just have little expectations of it.

All the view screens were holographic. You see the grid lines in TMP, and they were described as such. We just didn't have the SFX to make that apparent on screen...though you did see an attempt when Picard was talking to the Ferengi in the last outpost.
Even the desktop screens were described as holographic, same for all photos. The SFX usually meant a bit of sparkly tape round the edge, same for PADD screens. But they were always holo.

10 years before Kirk really ?! Looks like Spock was not the only half Vulcan on Starfleet and sertenly not the first, looks like i need to get back to class lol ... I see alien races I did't see before so hou can it be before Kirk's time?! And what about the uniforms ? That golden and sylver is way to shiny for a starfleet uniform.. Wonder what the Engineer uniforms look like Suspicious

Sorry to be so negative guys, but for me it needs a new story, think we need to go back basic and see what makes Star Trek feels like Star Trek. Its a no go for me...Thumbs down
