(can someone fix my poll; I messed it up)
Well, we can edit human embryos. So far, biologists are having "unprecedented successes using that gene-editing technology to alter early-stage, viable human embryos." The team edited a genetic mutation that often leads to heart failure in dozens of embryos.

If editing the gene prevents death, then of course you should edit the gene, if it prevents various disorders and improves quality of life, then I don't see why not. There does need to be regulation and of course, some countries probably won't follow such regulation, but I don't think it'd lead to war.

I think whenever it starts to disrupt people's lives, it may lead to war in the long run. Maybe not everyone will have access to this type of medical help and a lot of people will think it's too dangerous, which may cause lines in the sand to be drawn.
That regulation is where people may lose their minds, too. Some people won't follow the regulations, others will be denied treatment. Also, if we start creating people that are mentally and physically superior, people may take sides.
What if we don't stop at medical reasons and drift into higher brain development? Or it creates a genetic disorder we haven't begun to fathom?
I can see it as either extremely helping humanity or messing us all up. I don't think there will be an in-between.

In the UK, if it is for medical reasons, then everyone will have to have access to it, since that is how our medical system works. It would also be cheaper to fix a faulty gene than provide ongoing treatment for a lifelong genetic condition. The countries where healthcare isn't free is where people would have limitations in access.
The other thing is, humanity isn't united, so most issues aren't human issues, we are still very much separated by where we are born. There's a lot of regulation in the world about many things, differing from country to country and you have countries which just don't care. Such as Russia, which does things that displease many people, yet there's no chance of a war starting over them because Russia is powerful. The only people who are likley to rise up against Russia about testing on babies for making a "super human" would be the Russian people.
Additionally, genes are complicated, changing one gene can have an undesired effect, so it would be very hard to make a super human. I'm also not sure you can make someone genetically smarter, brain development is a strange thing and scientists are still working out how the brain works in various areas. A lot of how the brain develops is through learning at an early age, interaction with objects (toys or the surroundings) and as they grow, the more your brain is challenged, the better it gets.
One thing I read with the brain is that people who have studied past university level (doesn't have to be uni, could learn in your own time), have a greater chance of surviving brain injuries than those who haven't, this is because they have built more neural pathways, so if the brain is damaged, there is another route for information to pass. I suppose you could genetically modify a person to have a greater ability to make these, if there is a gene that aids the growth of neural pathways. But that alone won't make people smarter.
All in all, there is a massive inbetween with this, it won't help humanity since we aren't all united, we can't even agree on global warming! And it certainly won't mess everyone up, Africa won't get this technology anytime soon for example and there will be many other poor regions that won't, or countries that will refuse to employ it.
This is a subject that is so grey, it looks like it might rain.

Crap....I'm in the empire that has nowhere to go but down.
We're spread thin in 150+ countries, engaged in conflicts on several fronts, with discord in the homeland.
We need to manufacture a villain to unite us. I propose the demon of the hour Russia.
Now our eugenic super-soldier program can commence. We will of course need equally capable leaders and commanders for this army.

I figure in creating super soldiers, we'd have to cut back on regular soldiers. People will fight for their own right to defend/fight for their country and people will fight for the rights of the super soldiers, which supporters, would have to argue, do not have rights.
We're ready!! Canada is still undefeated
Might be a different story, now haha

Definitely a slippery slope. Sure, right now, some of the 'gene-edits' sound good and noble. But for what doesn't get mentioned or the secret applications that are not made public, where it will be for the 'wealthy and powerful' only.
As a race, we are absolutely horrible when it comes to ethics. I don't believe gene-editing will remain or stay ethical very long, if at all.

Right, exactly. When secret applications become public and people see the wealthy and powerful only benefiting, we'll have problems for sure. I'm in the same boat, this will eventually come to a head and people will fight against it.
I started a thread awhile back that didn't catch on. I found a similar story, "In Search For Cures, Scientists Create Embryos That Are Both Animal And Human."
http://www.npr.org/sections/health-s...imal-and-human
"We're not trying to make a chimera just because we want to see some kind of monstrous creature," says Pablo Ross, a reproductive biologist at the University of California, Davis. "We're doing this for a biomedical purpose." That's how it has to start out, but I can see this getting crazy, really fast.
