Trekyards is taking an in-depth look and comparison between the 2016 SDCC USS Discovery and the 2017 SDCC Production version, using specially created fan (but highly detailed) models of each ship made by Barry Chapman and textured by myself for the 2017 version (4K textures) to create as accurate versions of these ships as possible

I'm not a fan of the new one, looks too stretched. I wasn't a big fan of the first one either, but looking at the comparison the original one looks better, just because it hasn't been put through a Son'a skin stretch machine...

I agree, when I first got the model to texture it I was very surprised by the nacelles lenght ! But since it's only a fan model and I got very limited references to texture it (2 posters and 3 low-res concept arts) the real one will perhaps look different

To be honest, both models are not in par to be canon even if CBS confirm it is prime.
CBS really have no idea what is Canon. They should stop doing show in the past.

Indeed. This is supposed to be (*sigh*) a prequel to TOS, right? I don't see how the Enterprise could have evolved from this ship.

This ship would not have evolved into the Enterprise, as it was in a completely different class and design from the eventual Connie. Really, the more I watch the Trekyards video, the more I see what the designers were trying to do. They were trying to evolve from the early pre-warp5 ships seen in Enterprise and meet the original Star Trek concept art, which I feel they nailed pretty well. My problem is with the Shenzou, which looks like it belongs in the 25th century as opposed to the 23rd, and its only a few hundred bunos down from the Discovery. My other problem is with the Kelvin-timeline styled bridge sets. If they'd gone more the way of the USS Kelvin bridge, then I'd understand. We're radically departed from the era of cardboard sets anyway, so I get that mindset in creative design. What I don't get is how they excuse a bridge design being such a sharp contrast in technological representation to the design of the ship that plays host to it. This is where CBS is very inconsistent in their design, and is one of the more stark eyeroll moments of this upcoming series.
I will, however, go into this show with an open mind, the same way I did with Enterprise and the new films, and hopefully I'll find something redeemable about it. I'm not counting on it, but I'm not going to dismiss anything Trek until I have experienced it.

+1 here. It is like someone did the image in standard frame then gave it to someone with widescreen frame, and the product got stretched. Though the Son'a skin stretch machine is pretty hilarious.

I don't think they did, the warp drive nacelle always have been round from the canon first contact movie, enterprise and Star Trek TOS. Now if you look at the design, the warp drive are flat.
Even if the ship is another class, the ship design look doesn't match the design of the 23rd century. From canon movies, the only time they decided to change the roundness of the warp drive, its when they introduced the transwarp test bed Excelsior.
I am a Star Trek Fan, i bet the story they will tell in Discovery will be amazing, but the set, the look and the difference they have shown, is enough for me to go enjoy all the past Star Trek shows and movies.

The Enterprise is 10 years older than the Discovery, it was launched in 2245. Discovery takes place in 2255. When Kirk had command in 2265 the Enterprise was 20 years old.
The Discovery could be an experimental ship, maybe an early testbed of transwarp drive before it was implemented on the Excelsior. Hence the phrase "new way to fly" from the trailer.

It doesn't. TOS takes place in 2265+, Discovery takes place in 2255+
However, the NCC-1701 Enterprise was launched in 2245. When we see it in the TOS show it is already 20 years old and on it's 3rd captain.

However, the NCC-1701 Enterprise was launched in 2245. When we see it in the TOS show it is already 20 years old and on it's 3rd captain.
Nevertheless, I'd expect a slightly different look to the ship than what we have here, such as a more rounded engineering hull and an overall more soft look to the ship. It seems illogical to me that starfleet would go from a rounded look to a more square look and then return to the more rounded look after 10 years
As for Discovery being an experimental vessel, this seems quite likely to me based on it's unusual design for the time that it was built although probably not a transwarp test ship, as that system was destined to fail even without Scotty stopping up the drain.
