Star Trek The Motion Picture, a terrible movie for the most part
That movie, also known as Star Trek: Boldly Going Nowhere. Weak plot, not enough going on, a general feeling of being lost and just plain boring when all is said and done. Thankfully they wised up to that with Wrath of Khan and got things on track.
However Discovery eventually turns out, I do think that if another series appears, they need to jump forward in the timeline instead of heading back (say a bounce forward to around 2450) so they get a mostly clean slate to start from and move forwards.
Here's what worries me however.
Star Trek Nemesis from 2002 wasn't a great movie and has the dubious distinction of being the lowest grossing of all the Trek movies. Even if you adjust for inflation, that still doesn't change. It took 7 years for Star Trek to reappear on the big screen.
Star Trek Beyond was a disappointment. It had a good cast and script, lots of throwback references and had the advantage of it being the 50th anniversary.... and yet none of that was capitalised on. I suspect the studio got lazy, expected everyone to flock to it and rather than forgetting about promoting the movie, they simply didn't bother. There's a few rumours that the 4th film is now on thin ice and may not happen but nothing is decided yet.
Enterprise got of to a bad start. The Temporal Cold War arc following into the Xindi wasn't popular. People (generally) hated it. Once they finally moved away from it into mini-arcs, the show started to find it's feet and started to work. But the damage was done by that stage, so the plug was pulled and it got sent off with a mighty kick in the teeth series finale. The franchise was showing serious signs of fatigue at this stage and the cracks had appeared. The TV side of things was dead at that point for the next 12 years.
Now we have Discovery and reading some of the comments in various places online, it's heavily polarised opinions one way or the other. There is nothing wrong with giving opinions or criticism, but the more vocal side of the camp that appears to be winning out are the ones in which the red mist has descended and want it to fail at all costs, taken outside and shot, buried and erased from our memories. We're only 2 episodes in. Where's our sense of adventure and tolerance if we're not even willing to give the show a chance?
Star Trek hasn't had an easy ride in the 21st Century and I'm concerned the powers that be may well end up just saying "Stuff it then, we'll just not bother making anything again" and that'll be the franchise - both Prime and Kelvin Timelines - dead and buried once more, perhaps permanently.

The Fortunate thing is that in the age of "be perfect now" the Netflix deal that CBS signed may cover the series long enough for it to find it's feet. Reportedly this entire season is covered by the Netflix deal and the CBS AA money is gravy. The Netflix deal is a multiyear deal so hopefully we get at least 3 seasons to see what this can do and go from there.

Personally, I enjoyed it quite a lot, I think it's an entertaining show.
Could they stick too the lore better? Sure
Could they have done worst? Sure
I thought the visuals were great, the story was great and the acting wasn't too shabby either. Thinking back to certain Trek renditions..

There are DEFINITELY worse examples of Trek out there than what premiered on sunday.

Honesty though it's true. There have been some absolute stinkers in Trek history, lets give Discovery a chance to at least get the first season off to a proper start before we tear it apart too much.

Great season opener! I like how to released ep. 2 at the same time. Allows for a smooth flow into the rest of the series.

I've just watched both episodes again. While I [personally] still don't like what they've done with the Klingons, I definitely think this has the potential to become a great addition to the Star Trek universe.

Okay. Um, hi. I am -- obviously -- very late to this party. I put it off for a long while, but finally I gave in to curiosity and I grabbed a copy of Season 1 of Discovery.
I knew very little about the series going in. I knew about Spore drives and mycellium and weird looking Klingons and Tardigrades. I know of them, but not how they meshed. Everything I learned about Disco I learned from STO, and I didn't pay much attention to that.
I just watched the first three episodes back-to-back-to-back. I might get to two and three later. Right now I want to focus on the first episode.
Overall, I liked it. SHOCKING! I know, right? However...
It's not Trek.
It's a decent show, it's just not a decent Trek show. It's a scifi action adventure that uses Trek terminology and characters, but it's not Trek.
We can't discount the improved technology, graphics, and designs. They're all out of phase with what we know is coming after. But also consider that they couldn't make a new Star Trek prequel series today and adhere to canon. Hell, they failed miserably trying to do it with Enterprise. Today's audience would not put up with a canon-style pre-TOS series. They just wouldn't. So of course everything is flashier and edgier and more techie-techie. What they should have done was position Discovery somewhere else in the Prime (or even better, the Kelvin) timeline and it would have made more sense. Place this first episode 150 years after Voyager got home and you're golden. You can even keep your "100 years of no contact with the Klingons" if you want. Redesign the ships a little, yank the crazy bit involving Sarek and Amanda raising Burnham, and Bazinga! -- New Trek.
But this is not Trek.
By shoehorning Discovery into a time frame that has well defined beginning and ending points and a known progression, I think that they have set themselves up to fail. Now keep in mind, I know next to nothing about what's coming up. This is just what I'm taking away from the first episode. (And maybe a little bit of influence from the second and third is creeping in here.)
In the alternative, they could have renamed everything and redesigned the ships and called it Wet Wipe Theatre Presents: Space Adventure Shoot-em-up with Lorca and it would have still been a fairly good show.
I guess what I really feel here is sort of... blah. It's a good enough show on its own, it's downside is that... Say it with me:
It's not Trek.
"And when I saw the breadth of my domain, I wept, for there were no more worlds left to conquer."
