This thread is for pre and post episode discussion of the third episode, Context is for Kings. If you do not wish for spoilers, then you have missed all the warnings in the title and activity stream, shocking! So if you are reading this post, then you should turn away now.
Context is for Kings aired on Sunday, October 1st 2017.

Well they wasted no time with having a Starfleet vessel suffer a catastrophic accident.
I'm not sure I trust this new captain. I appreciate that he understands the circumstances around the mutiny, but the way he frames it makes me suspect ulterior motives as much as Burnam does.
As far as quality, it's about as average as X of the Week comes; it's not bad, but having to introduce us to a new ship and new characters makes this like a second pilot, so not as much time is left for actual plot.

After first watching this episode, I got a 'Dark Matter' Blink Drive vibe off the use of the Spore Drive. Then the situation with the very aggressive slug-beast on Discovery's sister ship is giving me a 'Dune' type of vibe about the Spore Drive. It's like an Iconian Gateway Drive built into a Federation ship, especially when Michael was placed in the Spore Booth, and that seems much too advanced for a prequel Star Trek series. Maybe it will prove too dangerous to use in the end, but is being exploited as a plot device for this series. I don't know, but that one aspect is clawing at me. (3 metaphors for the Spore Drive! Clearly, that's not coming across as anything Trek-related to me!) I did enjoy the shushing Klingon during his brief appearance though!

Feels Star Trek to me! I’ll admit a darker Star Trek but I like it.
Obviously this new type of drive will fail when it’s all said and done unless this is how Sloan used to get on and off DS9 all the time. I’m hoping it gets tied into iconian technology somehow.
Black badges....Section 31 anyone!?!?
Lots of TOS callbacks in this:
- The data cards
- The sound effects were dead on
- The way she navigated the holo screen by waving her hand is right out of The Cage
- The angled hallways of the Discovery are also right out of the The Cage
- The light blue and grey colors of the ship are again, right out of The Cage

Just watched it, not really a fan of how dark it is. The little data plastic slots were a nice little throwback but the plot of the episode wasn't really my thing.

I like it generally, although the 'slug-beast' corridor chasing scene was too dark in my opinion.

I was glued to my TV from start to end with this one, really enjoyed it. I loved the little additions for the Trek uber fans like the Tribble on Lorca's desk and even the Gorn skeleton in his lab.
Lorca is a lot closer to Sloan then he is to Kirk, but I like him. Kinda like Sisko and Sloan had a love child.. lol.
I really like the room mate Micheal gets stuck with, I think she may be the outlet for the comedy relief/light human touch the show will clearly need. I am also looking forward to seeing some more Vulcan Karate, that was pretty bad ass. The line of "Did that Klingon just tell you to shh?" was hilarious.
I get the show free since I already have Crave and the Space channel, but I would gladly pay for the series if I had to.

I tried watching Orville, just feels a little to "Police Academy" in space to me. Some episodes it feels like its not sure if it wants to be a serious sci-fi or a slapstick comedy.

I have to disagree, everything I have seen in Orville are reactions and jokes that I would do if I would be there. The characters there are acting like the people from 21st Century Earth put into the 25th Century.
I can connect much easier with them because they feel real. On the other hand what I have seen so far on Discovery are people I simply don't trust and it seems they don't trust each other.

I did not comment on the first two episodes. but i am liking how its going. Pacing was completely changed from the first two episodes which was to be expected. It feels like they are combining Star Trek and more untraditional Sci-Fi series. like Fringe (which was produced by JJ Abrams and Alex Kurtzman). I dont mind that.
Visuals are great and the theme music is growing on me. tho i also liked the Enterprise's theme
Overall its going good. and i really enjoy it. looking forward to the rest of it.

For me, just like the new Star Trek Movies, I think that the show is a generically ok Sci-Fi series especially since Alex Kurtzman who I don’t believe is a very good writer is involved. The producers throw bits and pieces of Star Trek into it which includes sounds and Tribbles. I recognized sounds on the bridge from the first episode, it seems like they are trying too hard at times.
I think that my biggest problem is that I don’t think that Sonequa Martin-Green is a very good actress. I understand that her “background” is she grew up on Vulcan, but her acting just bothers me. Any of the other actresses and actors on the show don’t bother me as much, I just want to throw her out the nearest airlock. Just my opinion about the show so far.

The new episodes don't have the same feeling as the older ones which makes me sad. I have to admit I am beginning to enjoy the discovery more than I was with the first two episodes. It could be better but could be worse.
