Anybody watch Netflix's "The OA"? Jason Issacs was great there, so him in ST was a great boon for me to want to watch this show.

To be fair, though, Star Trek hasn't stuck that closely to Gene's vision since midway through TNG. Ds9 and especially the Dominion War are very much antithetical to his vision, and he explicitly didn't want interpersonal conflict amongst the crew(s). From what I've heard, he was unhappy with the seemingly militaristic bent of Starfleet in Wrath of Khan, and Undiscovered Country had him kicked upstairs.
From my point of view the best thing to happen to Star Trek was Gene Roddenbery getting to make it, and the second best was when they stopped letting him make it. Some of the most well regarded pieces of Trek happened after his involvement became or chafed him quite a bit.
Yeah, that is a bit of a shame, though I am still lukewarm on the look. The saucer is great, and the shape of the secondary hull doesn't bother me, but for some reason it feels out of proportion with how far past the saucer the nacelles stick and how small the saucer looks compared to the secondary hull. admittedly, this only really stands out from directly overhead (though that does mean I get to see i every time the opening credits play.)
I sorta wish the Shenzhou was the protagonist ship. It was quite a beauty. Reminds me a bit of the Centaur as well (much like how the NX class was designed to look like an Akira)
It seems to me they wanted to do the whole Vulcan in Starfleet thing again, but they couldn't get away with the T'Pol thing this time since Starfleet's cowboy days are over with it now being the navy (for lack of a better term) for the Fedaration, so we're left with a very wooden human.
I'm not sure how much of that is writing, directing or acting, though. I haven't paid much attention to the actress before.

I think its a good Sci-fi show, but it isn't star trek, at least to me. Also in before First Officer B5 Lorien Knockoff does exactly what Burnham does and mutiny against his captain.

You know what? I'm enjoying Orville for it deliverying what I expected out of an upcoming Star Trek.
I'm enjoying Discovery for all reasons not Star Trek - just some new sci-fi which is borrowing the concept of Star Trek theme and a new take on it. A take, which really is not continuity with the previous Star Trek TV series in any way - it honestly is more in sync with JJ Abrahams movies if anything.
With that said - I have a hunch it is also based around Section 31, or rather, its inception. Black shuttles, black badges, black alert. Recruitment via kidnapping. All sounds too familiar.
