So in know we're still in the dark about this new tech and don't really know how it functions, but can we discuss it somehow?
It's pretty clear nothing like this exists in the previous Trek instances, the closest i think we've gotten is Iconian gate technology, but even that uses some sort of fixed wormhole type system.
This spore drive seems to be able to teleport a ship/person anywhere instantly, something that just does not exist, even around the final canon film we see (Nemesis).
How does it work?
What happened to it?
My personal hunch is that perhaps Discovery is the only ship now working on this tech and perhaps.....it will be "lost" after S1? What if the ship and crew get shot forward/backward in time, so they move to a newer period/location. One not constrained by the current canon. It could allow the same crew and ship to develop but away from the possible interference in the canon timeline, where such a star-drive simply doesn't exist.
Any ideas?

Personally, I think it is the dumbest thing I have ever seen, only second to the spinning saucer.

There was a similar 'biological' augmentation of warp drive used on the USS Equinox in Voyager, Janeway was more than vocal about it being un-ethical

Agreed, the spinning saucer was a little over the top. But I'm open to new mumbo jumbo (after all almost every other sci-fi has vast quantities of mumbo jumbo).
Lorca had some form of an explanation in Ep. 1.
Obviously we know nothing of this sort exists in canon, so we may need to wait and watch how the story develops. We should know this in less than 10 seasons , as DIS is set 10y before TOS.
Any ideas?
The writers have said the mirror universe is integral to the story, so do include that in the list of possibilities.

My thoughts exactly on this when the episode ended.

So having seen episode 4 it appears the upcoming plot is going to be centered around this new drive and if it's morally wrong to use it or not.
Seems to me that the drive needs a living being to navigate with, so i'm getting hints of Dune and Farscape here with how it works.
Seeing as effectively it only works by holding a living animal prisoner and torturing it to be your computer's brain for the space-jumps, i can see this going the usual route we've experienced before in Trek. It's wrong because it is hurting the creature, but it's required by the captain to win the war and be effective. Some interesting arguments coming up i guess.
It's not quite as bad as the Equinox drive in Voyager but pretty close.

The interesting thing about the Spore Drive concept is that it shares similarities to a Star Trek novel published back in 1994. It was called Crossroad.
Spoilers warning for those who haven't read that book and want to...
In that book, it wasn't spores, but there were creatures that were used to transit time/space. These creatures had "handlers" who essentially merged with them and over time lost their humanity as they spent more and more time interfacing with the creatures who controlled the propulsion drive on their ships. I wonder if that book has served as inspiration of sorts for the spore drive and the effects it has on Stamets.

Combine the two for guild steersman using spores (the spice melange) and fold space generators. Traveling without moving.
