Color me annoyed. I was able to dismiss the holographic comms for being a sort of early step on the way to holograms since they were still obviously a projection where the one in DS9 was like having an actual person there, but now they go an show a full on holodeck (which, unlike the DS9 holo comms was EXPLICITLY made out to be a new wondrous thing). The Vulcan (whom I assume to be an admiral or something) in the Starfleet uniform also sticks in my craw since Spock was supposed to be the first Vulcan in Starfleet, and judging by the dialog in this episode joined AFTER Burnham. Recall Enterprise went through some gymnastics to have T'Pol as a member of the Enterprise crew but not a member of Starfleet to avoid that snag.
Otherwise, the episode was pretty good, though my paranoia level continues to go up. I am wondering who will go off the rails first and try to kill everyone. Stammets was acting uncharacteristically chipper, like someone who's high on something, but now we've gotten more insight into Lorca's brand of crazy, and we still don't know anything about the new guy. Meanwhile, Burnham appears to have bought in fully to Lorca having lost the healthy distrust and suspicion of an ulterior motive she showed when she came onboard.
Next week: Cause and Effect, the high octane, summer blockbuster version.

That Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet is a myth. http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/in...alse_canon.htm

The holo-comms are explained a bit in the novel as to why they no longer became a thing (see my thread on the “Desperate Hours” novel).
The holo-simulator I believe is a prototype. I’m hoping more is explained later on this.
Spock was not the first Vulcan in starfleet.
I believe Stamets is getting high on spores spores LOL

I think Lorca is the kinda captain that is a necessary evil at the time of war - but it is yet to remain what exactly the brand of evil he is. I mean, Admiralty are pissed at him for not following protocols and stuff which is BS really, and also kinda shows how "fresh" the UFP is in the brink of war.
Though, the ending was misleading - kinda made it look like he sent her there knowing full well what would happen. It'll be interesting to see though where his characters goes as I tend to believe he is trying to do his best to make sure the Federation wins the war - but he can't be held back by fancy protocols.
While my rant about them using this timeline with all this high-tech remains constant, I'm personally considering Discovery as its own prime spin-off/fan-made movie//take on Star Trek, and did like this episode.

The chronological order of events made it look like he sent her knowing fully well she'd be captured or worse be killed. But if that indeed is true, it just goes on to demonstrate to me how "messed up" (as Jason Isaacs himself claims his character is) Lorca is. As stated before, the minor canon inconsistencies or the fact that Discovery exudes tech. not even seen in TOS doesn't bother me (one bit).

Umm, ok.
It wasn't an outright explanation. There is a comment in the book that the holo-comms used in Starfleet are a bandwidth hog and are very difficult to encrypt. It insinuates that the Enterprise's more advanced (non-holo) communications method is simnifically more secure. In the novel the Enterprise had both methods and both were used.

Keep in mind that he didn't send her anywhere. She is an Admiral. To me his conflict rests more with the fact that he isn't sure if he should feel bad or not about what happens to her. He is struggling with between compassion and selfishness. Knowing she is right about him but him believing he can handle it.
I don't think he is crazy, I think he is suffering from PTSD which is a fantastic sub-plot and really connects with what veterans go through today.

I like how they weaved the blow of Spock not joining the Vulcan Science, Expedition?, Academy being compounded by the fact Sarek chose him to be eligible to join over Burnham. Makes his rift with Spock in later episodes have just that little bit more depth.

I’m ok with the show in general as a generic space action show, it’s not Star Trek to me and sadly won’t be. That being said I like all the characters except for Burnham, to me she is just unlikable. I can’t tell if it is that Sonequa Martin-Green is just not a good actress in my opinion as I have never seen any other television show that she has been in or if her character is just that off putting to me. Other than her I like all of the other characters.
I was actually surprised that there wasn’t some sort of shuttle accident, every other time there is a shuttle scene someone dies, blows up, gets taken or something catastrophicly stupid happens that it makes me wonder why they are even the darned things. I also like how it seems that Stamets is high as a kite....

I’m getting the feeling that more happened to Lorca while he was imprisoned by the Klingons than some bright lights and “choose your pain”. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the Admiral finds the real Lorca in a Klingon prison somewhere. As for Tyler, he’s either in on the plot or has been duped/brainwashed into the whole thing.
Loved the references to Spock and the Enterprise; the whole Sarek/Amanda memory sequence added great depth to the characters and the story.
