A really good episode I thought. It was clear it was directed by someone with a passion for Trek.

I thought the detail given to the Terran Empire was nice and it’s good to see it fleshed out a bit instead of just being a comedy evil twin like it normally was in DS9.

I do find the mirror universe a bit weird though in that if it’s so different then it’s likely a lot of stuff shouldn’t just be the same but with a different paint job. I mean a lot of people who they normally just make a mirror version of probably wouldn’t exist at all. And starship designs would probably be wildly different because of the whole military focus rather than science. But that’s too advanced for most people, who need to see easily identified ships and characters to grasp the idea of a mirror version.

Best part is seeing it tie in some nice TOS stuff like the Defiant. This is going to get interesting.

It would be crazy if the entire series was centered around finding a way out of the mirror universe. Like Voyager, they spend years looking for various ways to get home while at the same time fighting with the resistance.

Though the Defiant in question here is the Prime universe Defiant so it would have had the USS prefix - it’s obviously got different pylons and what appear to be notches in the saucer (which I’m going to hope are the result of a refit due to the ships age at that point or a unique modification rather than being a retcon update), but it is/was a Federation rather than Empire starship.

I’ve not seen the episode yet so I would assume they either never altered the registry or the computer effectively recognised it as the original Defiant.

Some discovery edge tholians would make creepy bad guys I loved this episode - kind of annoyed they killed the doctor off though I liked the storyline between him and stamets without any discrimination element too - a genuine love story arc between them it was very much I wanted the future to be painted as - gay wedding and everything would have been perfect - instead they have killed him off which I’m very annoyed about and it goes back to Burnham and Tyler which is a bit stale :-/ I’m getting the impression though as Lorca tried to overthrow the emperor that he could in fact turn out to be a good guy in this to try and aid the rebels and escaped into prime universe to avoid death? Else a normal Terran in the normal universe would stick out like a sore thumb don’t you think?

It's some good speculation. It's what I've been thinking as well.

Okay so let me start off that the Discovery makers have made my deepest wish come true.

They've gone and stuck themselves right in between the TOS era mirror universe and the "In a mirror darkly" mirror universe (which ended with Empress Hoshi Sato!! Awesome!!) from the ENT era.

Imho "in a mirror darkly" is easily one of the best episodes in all of startrek! I wouldn't mind if they spend half a season or more in there!

Second, maybe redundantly so, i want to point out that the USS Defiant from the TOS and ENT episodes had traveled back into time about a century as well as into another universe where it was captured and made flagship by Hoshi Sato at the end of "In a mirror darkly".

The USS Discovery enters the mirror universe around a century after the USS Defiant was taken by Empress Sato.

The ships we see in the Discovery series could be the result of a century of evolution of reverse engineered USS Defiant technology. In that case it is very probable that the USS Discovery is hopelessly outmatched, weapon technologically, by the terran empire ships. The only thing that the USS Discovery has in its favor, or should have, in that case is probably the spore drive.

This is ofcourse all speculation, based on the presumption that the terran empire, under hoshi sato, took the technology from the USS Defiant, reverse engineered it, and developed it from there. If Hoshi decided to keep the tech from the Defiant or maybe even the whole existence of the USS Defiant, as secret as possible so she could keep it as her insurance of power this plays out differently (and is probably the way its gonna be playing out in the Discovery series, come to think of it...).

Anyway, the fact is that the USS Defiant, when it was taken by the Terran Empire was a century ahead of their technology at the time and that the USS Discovery is now in the Mirror Universe a Century after that happened. As far as continuity goes there are all kinds wiggle room for the makers of the Discovery series.

And besides that,I don't really think that the USS Defian't picture we saw in the episode was such a big stretch from the original to be honest. More of nod towards the ENT series ship design esthetics.

The thing i am more curious about is how they're going to explain the fact that the rebellion that the ISS Enterprise was fighting against is still fighting a century later and still leave room for Spock to become leader of the Terran Empire about half a century later. (which resulted ultimately in the defeat of the Terran Empire by the Klingon Cardassian Empire. I mean if you're going to worry about continuity, that's more of a stretch than the picture of the USS Defiant we saw.

About the death of the doctor, we can almost be sure he's not dead forever. Two days ago, in an article on trektoday ( https://www.trektoday.com/content/20...-is-important/ ) Cruz is quoted to say "(...)It will be a larger-than-life love story in the vein of Romeo and Juliet(...)" using future tense. So we can almost be sure we'll see more of the doctor and the engineer in the future.

TL;DR: This episode was my most nerdgasmic dream come true! It's awesome, i couldn;'t be happier, and i wouldn't mind if they spend half, one or more seasons with this story arc!
