So I just finished Discovery and for the most part I thought it was ok story wise, but had issues with some details. Like, what's with all the spinning?
But that's not what I made this thread for, I know my Trek lore pretty well from TNG on, but not so much from late ENT era to TNG. I was hoping someone could fill me in on anything important I need to know to better understand Discovery.
Also to correct me in a few cases, like Disc takes place before TOS, but I thought the first Klink cloaking device was shown during TOS. And arent all the Klingon's supposed to look human because of the augment virus? I'm sure they changed it to make the Klingon's more interesting, but they could have at least talked about what happened.

As far as the spinning goes, I think this pretty accurately depicts their reasoning:
"There's a point where we needed to stop and we have clearly passed it. But let's keep going and see what happens..."

I'm sure for the producers of the show, it's just another cool visual effect...but, from a pseudo-scientific point of view it could possibly be described as how the transition from normal space to the mycellial plane looks from an external frame of reference. The ship doesn't actually spin, is more that space around the ship is contorting to move the ship.
I like to think of it like the mathematical gymnastics need to convert from a cartesian coordinate system to a polar coordinate system...except in an n-dimensional space.

But that's my point, it's NOT cool
But again, that's not what this thread is about so, does anyone know if they messed with the lore or not?

I like to think of the spinning saucer as something akin to Stargate whereby it is actually filled with tech that somehow opens a gate to the spore network, it needs to spin to create some sort of spore-wormhole-dimension bridge. The space bridge in the Thor movies does a similar trick with a spinning part to open up a pathway between dimensions.
So somehow the saucer is flooded with spore energy and then spins up to open a gateway which once at a critical point makes the ship "flip" into that network and out the other side.
The spinny twirly bit is no more daft than the flash you get from TNG era warp-out effects tbh.

I have no problem that the ship spins when it makes the jump but the saucer spinning is stupid.

I don't mind that the ship spins when it makes the jump as it is literally point a to b in an instant, unlike Warp Drive where you have to actually travel the route. In that sense it works as far as a vis effect goes.
The fact the whole saucer section spins is stupid. Plus from a tech continuity sense it's stupid too when it comes to inertial dampening. Discovery is ten years before TOS and yet they have inertial dampeners that can keep everybody on Discovery from being smacked into the walls and turned to jelly every time they use that drive considering the entire saucer spins, yet somehow ten years later they can't keep people from flying around the bridge whenever the ship takes a hit.
It's that age old problem of using modern tech while setting a show before an older show. Enterprise had a few similar issues and that was 100 years before TOS yet alone Discovery's 10 years.

Don't forget about the Force Fields that can seal hull breaches and than Starfleet forgot about until the launch of the Enterprise-B.

But are the force fields not reliant on the actual emitters being in working order? So it’s possible the Ent-B got smashed up so it’s emitters never worked?
And the B was barely fitted and ready for her maiden voyage either so it’s possible some gear wasn’t working fully yet.
Plus we’ve seen such tech work in lots of varying ways in every show so there’s never any consistency from any particular period, same thing with warp drives, transporters, shields and a million other things too!

I think Enterprise was the best series of Star Trek ruined by CBS getting money hungry before they give it its due, season 3-4 were 2 of the best ever made - given another year or two it would have probably made more sense, they started doing serial storytelling then long before Discovery and it’s Trek Lore was spot on, if I had a choice... I’d make an ENT movie :-D or continue with Series 5 with the coalition of planets I always wanted to see that!

I'll be honest I liked Enterprise for the most part. You're definitely right when it came to seasons 3 and 4 when the focus was mostly on the Xindi war and having an overall expanding story ark it definitely picked up..at least until Riker and Troi showed up in the final episode, which even then as an episode might have been okay had it not been the final ever episode, they could have switched the air orders around I think to fix that. Plus Archer had Porthos and I love beagles

I can't follow you the Enterprise-B emitters were working even with a big hull breach.
