Something similar to it that's currently airing is called "Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody". It's nothing special but it's another show where I'm curious to see what crazy power the MC is will get.

But if you want a REALLY good anime about a normal person getting sent to a game, try Overlord. It's amazing and season 2 is currently airing.

I'm currently watching Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody, but it only chucks out new episodes on Thursdays. He's very OP.

I agree that the protagonist in In Another World With My Smartphone is crazy OP as well. But its another one of those ridiculous Manga-turned-Anime Harem/Alt Universe/Wish Fulfilment style things. If you read the write-up about it based on the Manga, eventually they counter-balance him with someone else who is equally OP, plus he ends up with nine wives. Its a bit Lolicon too, since two of the wives are 12 years old.

A great anime for being stuck in a game-world is Sword Art Online, which is very VERY good. Certainly my favourite anime of all time right behind Girls Und Panzer (Nothing will ever touch that in my heart). Recovery of an MMO Junkie is a lot of fun too, since it balances RL and Online Life quite nicely.

There's also Log Horizon which is more about them learning to live in an MMO world than trying to escape.

Ya, I love SAO (screw the haters ), Recovery and Log Horizon. I consider Log Horizon to be SAO's comedic cousin, and I love both of them equally.

I saw the SAO movie in theaters and the fans were so awesome! Everyone was cheering so loud during the final fight.

But LH has some of the funniest and nerdiest moments in anime. No spoilers but that scene in the Guild Hall when Shiro drops the bomb on everyone, I never get tired of watching it XD

Again though, if you havnt watched Overlord, I recommend it. It's ALMOST as good as SAO and LH

I was just reminded of an older space anime that was pretty good and some of the folks here might like: Starship Operators.

Basically a group of cadets are on a training cruise when their homeworld is conquered, and after their ship's regular crew abandons ship, they decide to stay aboard and fight. In order to get money and support, they make a deal to turn their lives aboard ship into a reality tv show

I was onboard until the reality tv show part.

So, I was surfing around my Roku Apps and landing on Amazon. On a lark I thought, "Robotech". I mean, I own the three TV seasons remastered on DVD, but still. Amazon Prime has those three as well as the original series (Macross, Southern Cross and Mospedia) aaaand ... The Shadow Chronicles!

Seeing a 2007 date had me raise a Vulcan eyebrow and I then though, "What the heck ..." 15 minutes later and they show Scott Bernard just before th attack on Reflex Point (somewhere within the last two episodes of the series so there is a big tie in) and I decide it's time for bed.

I'm still on the fence and have yet to research any of this so far. But I wanted to join the thread because ... anime ... even if it is Harmony Gold.

Robotech has always interested me, especially the original series, since it's three different shows stitched together. I've been curious about how well that actually worked out, so I've been meaning to check it out

As a fan, I highly recommend it. Harmony Gold did a fantastic job weaving them together, yet will require some relaxation of imagination, so to speak.

For example, the powersource "Protoculture" goes through interesting changes between the series that you'll just have to accept.

I'm sure there are a few other inconsistencies, but I got over them because it's three totally different shows made to be related to each other.
