Well, our previous promotional pricing expired, so I called Comcast to see what deals they have available. For the same price as we were paying before, we have faster speeds, more channels, and Netflix included.

Here's our new internet speeds. I was surprised this is available in my area!

I'm much happier now. We did have to get a new Gateway as the previous Gateway only supported up to 400Mbps. It was cheaper to upgrade everything.

Speeds of 80 - 200mb are the norm here in the UK. There are areas that can get up to 350mb, but these are still thin on the ground and normally only found in newer developed areas right now.

Fun fact: The fastest ever download speed was achieved by BT between their tower and a research facility - that came out at 1.4 terabits per second, which would allow you to download 44 HD movies in just 1 second.

Depends on where you are of course, but about 90% of the UK has access to fibre optic connections. Though rarer nowadays, there are still places that can’t even get broadband connections.

It's the rural parts that are unable to get broadband these days I think, BT has the contract to roll out broadband across the country to meet the government target, but they often run into problems. Companies don't want to run cables in certain areas because it's expensive to do so, cities an built up areas are fine, they know they can get customers, but going into rural areas is just not economical.

I live in a major metropolitan area and speeds in my area (that is offered) caps around 28 Mbps. I guess the hamsters running the lines have to support the other 18-20 million other people in the area.

I wish I could see speeds like that. Not that I see any real degradation with online stuff now... but the extra seconds I have to wait added up could be significant over a year.

where I used to live you could only get Regular broadband (up to 20mbps) because they were unable to install Cable due to the town being the site of Roman Remains and your not allowed to dig them up!

But then BT came out with Fibre Broadband and all's good now

For the longest time, 250 Mbps was the highest speed available in my area. Then Comcast launched Gigabit internet in the metropolitan area, but it was $299 per month, and couldn't be bundled with other services. A tech had to come out to install a dedicated line. They had some infrastructure upgrades that allowed it to be bundled with other services.

Fibre is available in our area, but just barely. Verizon FiOS is available in the next town over (smaller than ours), and another ISP is performing surveys to bring gigabit fibre and cable TV to the area. I'm not sure how well those surveys will go, since Comcast holds a monopoly on TV services in this area (not including satellite TV).
