We've had the talk about Discovery and the Picard series recently, alongside the rumours of the Tarantino project, but now it appears that the Kelvin Timeline films are in trouble, as it's being reported that both Chris Pine (James T. Kirk) & Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk) have walked away from the table for Star Trek 4.
Pine/Hemsworth talks break down
The crux of it appears to be down to that old chestnut, money. After the mediocre return that Beyond bought in, Paramount is worried about the budget and is trying to scale back. Pine and Hemsworth from their camp are saying that they had pre-agreed deals in place for a number of years now and Paramount is trying to ignore these.
It remains to be seen if the 2 are serious about walking away or if this is simply a negotiation tactic, but all's not well on this side of Trek. It appears the rest of the cast have agreed to return, so we'll see happens going forward.
Beyond wasn't a bad film, though I do think Paramount didn't properly tap into the 50th anniversary fanfare and really missed a trick with it.

Discovery won't get into Season 3 either.
Despite what people say. There's a reason for the failing of these shows/movie series (Discovery even more so).
Netflix threatening CBS over Discovery. Already and CBS picking up the tab.
Kutzman messing things up.
They've pinned their hopes on magically creating a new audience out of thin air. Ignoring the core audience.
When that audience they're targeting doesn't exist. Other than in their own minds. The attacks on Twitter by the writers and cast of Discovery speak volumes.
Mark my words.
In 18 months neither this nor Discovery will be a thing
And they'll be trying to use Patrick Stewart to try and add legitimacy to their latest fumbling attempt to bridge the huge gaps in Kelvin and worse Discovery with or to try deligitimise the 'prime universe'
All for IP related issues.
People can attack me all they want. I'm not a Trump voter (Im not even American) nor a racist nor anti anyone (barring bad writers) or any of that stuff. Its just too in your face and forced. Writers acting contrary to canon. And turning the traditional audience that supported star trek from 1986 to 2005 completely off.
There is a reason Star Wars is in crises. It's happening in Star Trek very similarly.

We know it's supposed to be a time travel movie which I like.
Pine did a really nice job in Beyond portraying Kirk's feelings about his dad and I think it's a good move to build on that.

You know, it would be good if they used this as an opportunity to come up with an entirely new plot for a show based around a new cast of characters, Here's my Idea.
Premise:
Story about a hardened Vulcan Captain who lost her family after Nero's Attack and now commits herself to her duties as a Starfleet officer unable to cope with her loss openly, her situation made worse when She is put in command of a crew of Academy misfits and Officers who couldn't even cut it on a salvage crew.
Their mission? Exploring the Alpha Quadrant.
The ship? an Unfinished Vengeance Class Dreadnought Salvaged and refitted for exploration,
Its name? "Defiant"
A Story of Loss, Acceptance, Redemption and To Boldy Go Where no one has gone before!!!
At least That's what I think they should do. Like it or not there is a lot of potential for story telling in the Kelvin Timeline.

Yup. When Viacom broke up and Paramount and CBS became separate companies the Star Trek Film and Star Trek TV IP was split.
Also, part of the deal was that CBS wasn’t allowed to make a TV show until 2017 which is why it hasn’t been on TV for so long.

I will give you credit...you managed to somehow incorporate Trump into your post....didn't see that one coming.
That being said, this is your opinion and it's your right to have one.
I have been a Star Trek fan since I was old enough to watch it (80's). I started with TOS and the TOS movies, never missed a first run episode of TNG, DS9, Voy, Ent, or Disco. I was also at every premier night of every movie since Voyage Home. I am a huge fan of Discovery as well as all Star Treks before it.
I'm not sure what you are calling a traditional audience but what you just posted I've heard about TNG, DS9, Voy, Ent, and the Kelvin movies at the time they premierd. It's not new nor surprising and it's just an opinion, nothing more, nothing less.
I'd have to agree with you.
I grew up watching TNG and the TMP era movies in the 80's/90's and I've watched and enjoyed every single iteration of Star Trek since then. Sure there have been some stinkers (cough.....Threshold....cough) but overall I've enjoyed every minute of it.
I'm not sure what "traditional audience" is meant to mean in regards to Trek as I've met people from all angles in relation to it;
- people who are watching the shows in reverse order and loved ENT first and foremost.
- people who love the new Kelvin movies but dislike the prime shows
- people who despise the TOS shows but love DSC
- people who love TOS and also love DSC
- people who hate DS9/VOY/TNG/TOS/DSC/ENT or any combination of those.
- people who are just glad to have any Trek shows or movies.
There really is no way you could describe any audience as "traditional" because in the last 50 odd years there's been a so much variation in what was on screen and not all have agreed with them. There's a wide scope of people who watch Trek and generalizations is to ignore the reality of the situation.
Some older fans might dislike the newer forms of the franchise but there will be fresh people coming in who do like it. Plus it's not like we haven;t been here before with every time a new direction was taken with Trek.

Sul - think that’s a fantastic way of describing your point of view there, couldn’t agree more!
I personally hate TOS and I’m not particular fan of any of the TOS movies other than 2 & 6!
My fave series are ENT & VOY. But love the others too - just not TOS or Animated!

I wish I could source it, yet I read over the weekend that Pine and Hemsworth camps are also suggesting that because their names are more recognizable with more successful titles, they deserve more money and Paramount is saying, "yeah, no".
This, naturally paints a different point of view.

I'm no lawyer but if Pine had a contract for 4 films, then the studio don't have much of an option really. They either ante up or they release Pine from the contract (probably with a parachute payment). If they decide to pay him the sum agreed in advance then they need to make sure that the film is good enough to make a metric tonne of cash. I know I really enjoyed the interplay between the crew in Beyond, even if the film was kinda bad. They should recapture that and go further with it in the next one. Forget recasting Chekov too, just mention that he's been reassigned to the Reliant and leave it at that. Finally, for the love of all that's dear, don't damage the enterprise so much that it needs another refit again. Seriously, do shields not work in the JJ verse?
