I'd assume "traditional audience" would be "people who liked Star Trek".
JJ Abrams said he doesn't enjoy Star Trek, and made the movies for people who like movies, not people who liked Star Trek.

As someone in both groups, I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

I think JJ is more a Star Wars fan thus delights in blowing up the Star Trek iconics. Or the Fast and Furious director likes to see stuff blown up and crashed in spectacular fashion. Which the Enterprise did in the last movie.

Whatever the case, if one does not love Star Trek... expect to be disappointed.

As for timelines... aren't they just guidelines and things for other writers to break...er... manipulate?

They didn't really work in Deep Space Nine 9 either as the war arc drew on, countless times ships seemed to not have any shields to speak off and depended entirely on their hull armour to offset the damage. That was something that bugged me as that little detail seemed to be forgotten about for the sake of plot armour.

Compared to the TV shows, the Enterprise never really got a fair shake in any of the films, regularly getting the snot beat out of it thanks to the movie budget. Let's do a quick review:

The Motion Picture - Returned essentially unscathed, but the film was so boring everyone had stopped caring long before that.
The Wrath of Khan - Came off second best to the Reliant as it was essentially crippled for most of the film after the initial encounter.
The Search for Spock - Blown up, run down the curtain and joined the bleeding choir invisible. It ceased to be!
The Voyage Home - Only appeared in the closing couple of minutes, which leads us to...
The Final Frontier - The new Enterprise-A and it's a lemon essentially, clearly not ready to go on active duty.
The Undiscovered Country - Spends several minutes getting battered before it devises a way to turn the tables, only to get slated for decommissioning immediately afterwards.

Now lets look at the TNG films:

Generations - Blown up, run down the curtain and joined the bleeding choir invisible. It ceased to be! (Again)

Now the Enterprise E marked a turning point for the ship, as it actually gave as good as it got and then some:

First Contact - Lead the fleet against the Borg, fired the shots that destroyed the cube and the sphere, got partly assimilated but then saved the day.

Insurrection - At a disadvantage in the Briar patch because of its engines not being properly fitted for the effects of the patch, yet it detonated the warp core against the Son'a weapon and curb stomped their ships.

Nemesis - Though it ended up crippled after ramming the Scimitar, it held its ground and put up a much stiffer fight than the 2 Romulan vessels assisting it, despite being more heavily damaged.


Kelvin returns to the TOS theme of thinking, with the Enterprise getting damaged, near wrecked and ultimately destroyed as each film came along.

You'd think for being the Federation Flagship and pride of the fleet, they'd show it as not being as much of a pushover as it has been in most of the films.

That's a great breakdown of the ship's life on film. Yet, JJ has utterly destroyed the ship consistently so far and that's an issue for me (besides the rest of the content in his Trek, which is another discussion), and I wanted to share because ... internet.

That being said, this is your opinion and it's your right to have one.

I have been a Star Trek fan since I was old enough to watch it (80's). I started with TOS and the TOS movies, never missed a first run episode of TNG, DS9, Voy, Ent, or Disco. I was also at every premier night of every movie since Voyage Home. I am a huge fan of Discovery as well as all Star Treks before it.

I'm not sure what you are calling a traditional audience but what you just posted I've heard about TNG, DS9, Voy, Ent, and the Kelvin movies at the time they premierd. It's not new nor surprising and it's just an opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

Well I understand your point. But I am of the stern view that the 'progressive' obsession is literally ruining the story telling. Star Trek by its nature was always progressive and didn't do 'stunts'.

Further having characters and continuity break all the time is ruinous. At least on the Kelvin timeline there is continuity. Of a sort.

I've never been so disappointed as I was in STD.

Kelvin was better far better and that says something.

But I would like to go back to the roots of STTNG and not pander to elements that are literally ruining the series.

I'll never watch (past episode 3) or accept STD. Ever.


But Kelvin I'll accept as an alternative reality.

I'm not too bothered about the Big E getting beaten up or destroyed in the films. Those are the big showpiece missions after all, where they encounter the worst bad guys and get into the worst fights, it makes sense they'd get smashed up a lot.
And tbh, the Constitution in particular shows quite a resilience in the films, especially the Kelvin ones. It puts up a heck of a fight in all three so far and only gets totally wiped by sheer force of numbers in Beyond.

Back to the OP, regardless of who is "right" between Paramount and Pine/Hemsworth, as a community how do you feel about replacing Pine as Kirk?

Frankly, Paramount needs to stay the *h e l l* away from time travel. This solves Hemsworth. After that, replace Pine because Kirk is a character you don't walk away from. TAKE THE MONEY PINE, SERIOUSLY!

Frankly, Paramount needs to stay the *h e l l* away from time travel. This solves Hemsworth. After that, replace Pine because Kirk is a character you don't walk away from. TAKE THE MONEY PINE, SERIOUSLY!

Yup, i'd dump the time travel story. Otherwise people are gonna see it as another copy of a previous film (ST: IV in this case)
I mean look at the films so far: Darkness - tries to be a reverse copy of WoK, Beyond - Enterprise gets blown up and the crew stranded on a planet just as in Search for Spock.
So that's 2/3 films that have been close enough to the original films you could get a bit near to accusations of copying. Just look at the trouble Star Wars gets with TFA & TLJ.

Honestly a time travel film would be compared to Voyage Home even if the plot was utterly different, or they went to the future. They need to get away from that as much as they can.

I'd say Pine should be worth the cost, he IS Kirk to the new breed of fans and i think the dynamic that this new crew has really works well, they must keep that going together.

Unless Pine agrees to a cameo at the end, that's gonna be a very unsatisfying film. Although, track him and travel to a far away planet where they find his grave. Uhura cries, Spock falls to his knees and throws his hands in the air (Dafoe in Platoon style), Scotty plays the bagpipes, Fade to Black, roll credits.
