This is my favorite episode in all of Star Trek. IDK, It's just one of those episodes - everyone has one. The ones that are not very popular or talked/blogged about. But it's yours.
What's your "Lower Decks"? (Gee, I hope I don't see too many "Inner Light" replies)

Indeed. In most good series, there is that one episode that puts some focus on the lives of the "regular people". Seeing how they go about their duties, challenges, life gives you that little bit more connection with them. Let's you relate to them and all that.
I'll have to dig up that episode and watch it again. I know there were others in other series... just can't recall them vividly enough to pinpoint them.
But a good topic, nevertheless.

There were 2 episodes like that in Voy. In the first season there were a group of Maqui (s1e16) and then another group of misfits (Good Shepard)

Oh man, Lower Decks, what a gut punch of an episode that was. Difficult enough to watch the first time around. So much so that I've never gone back and rewatched it. Hmm, you have me thinking that maybe I can work that poor Bajoran Ensign into a future Disavowed story. I was totally rooting for her all through that damned episode.
There was an episode of Babylon 5 that followed two technicians as they went about their day, all the while intersecting with major characters as something big happened in the background. Wonderful episode.

Lower Decks was always a favorite of mine. When we're exposed to the senior officers on the ship all the time it's easy to forget that there are 1,005 other officers and crew on board the Enterprise. So it's nice to see their perspective of the ship and their day to day struggles.
The Battle was another. Don't have a particular reason why. I just always liked it. Even though it was during the dreaded first two seasons. lol

I think this is a piece of classic trek history and is pure gold - I love this particular episode and I’ve glad you’ve brought it up so I can get it up on Netflix and watch it again!
Love the focus on the lower deck staff as highlighted already, it’s a crying shame to be honest that their couldn’t be more character themes like this where they play minor storylines for them in the background to make more of them, a bit like Vorik in Voyager? Because they were a really likeable group of junior officer characters!
Definitely worth a rewatch!

Is it just me, or do all of the Senior Officers seem like jerks in episodes dealing with subordinates, like Lower Decks, and the first Barclay episode? *LOL* I mean, we know in Lower Decks, Picard has to be a jerk. But the senior officers seem so aloof and untouchable in Lower Decks, its kind of disconcerting.
I realize that in a realistic sense, this is how it would be on a ship like the Enterprise. But when you're watching at home - its weird, because for seven years, the main cast were like my friends. *LOL* They were cool. But looking at them through the "lens" of the junior officers, they seemed completely unapproachable. Even Trombone playing, backwards sitting, beard and a grin Riker, who seemed the most approachable. *L* It's a testament to how well done the episode is, I suppose.
But over the years, I've grown to be annoyed at Geordi. He was so mean to Barclay, letting other officers tease him. When you let Wesley Crusher crack on someone, that's just going too far. *LOL* He learned the error of his ways, but I just think he's a jerk supervisor. And a jerk date. *L*

I think the Bridge crew played a integral part in developing these junior officers. Each Junior officer had a different CO. And Yes, Riker and Geordi did come off as a little brash. But we saw this before in Far point (TNG) when he made Geordi stand in the position of attention as he checked in with Riker. I think it would be easy to gain Riker's respect, given that you are a good officer. Ensign Ro was a good example. They fought all the time. But in Premptive Strike (TNG) when Ro defected and she told Riker, he respected her decision. I like to believe that Cmdr. Riker believes in people. Him being stern from time to time is just all part of being 1st in command.
It is always interesting to see Geordi interact with his subordinates in Engineering. Even though Geordi was the Chief Engineer, we rarely got to see him in command. I've never seen him in the chair or give orders on the bridge. In engineering he was always working with his team. When there were scenes where Geordi was interacting with his fellow engineers, it was more of a think tank problem solving session as seen in The Nth Degree (TNG). Engineers aren't like your ordinary officers. they work better together than a hierarchy, as explained by Chief O'brien to Worf in
Starship Down (DS9). Cief O'Brian said that engineers somewhat go by a different culture. Geordi was obviously annoyed by Taurik. But who wouldn't be if you had Vulcan logic in your face 24/7. But he does respect him. He came by and asked for his assistance during his off hours, which means Geordi knows he's a capable engineer. I would have loved to see Taurik and Geordi working together more often.
Worf was a good CO and great mentor to Sito Jaxa. He went through great lengths for her and disagreed with Riker in front of the other Bridge Officers when Riker told him he was unsuure of her. Riker wasn't confident about Jaxa, the job was gonna go to Sam. Even though Riker was hard on Sam, it shows that Riker's personal feelings are not taken into consideration when deciding the fate of Junior Officers. Worf's assessment of Sito Jaxa was so articulate and sincere, Riker had no other choice but to reconsider her
The relationship between the Doctor and Nurse Ogawa was down right fraternization. Which is OK and acceptable in the medical community. Crew evaluations and promotion were important to her, but she was concerned about her personal life. and the only advice her CO gave her was about personal relationships. Which is also important when leading.
And the Captain, who had to pull strings to get Sito Jaxa on the Enterprise just so she had a fair shot. So..
I think this episode is abouut four junior officers on different paths and the impact each respective officers' CO had on them. So more of less the Bridge officers weren't around often. Yes. But when they were, it made a huge impact on the story, the characters, and was necessary in order for the Lower Deck Crew to grow.

Great commentary Deltron, with excellent examples.
It made me reflect on how each of the "main characters" referred to their subordinates and juniors. Geordi for instance, I always recall him using people on his engineering team by their first name. Reggie, Wesley, etc. Data seemed to use a persons title/rank surname. Picard used the polite Mister/Miss or rank surname with subordinates (he is the Captain) but with his senior staff, he used their given names.
Wil Riker flipped around depending on the situation and the hat he wore at the time. He could use the rank surname, mr./miss surname, or their given name. Guess that is the life of an XO, who is the main disciplinarian (i.e. maintain order) for the ship.
We didn't see *too* much of this "lower deck" stuff in the TV or movies. But in the novels... there are numerous scenes I can remember of "mundane" officer duties were Riker was dealing with an officer or what not (Time To.... series).
