So, Benteen is out, but her legacy remains. Do we just want to keep it a generic captain with no name? If we wanted to go with an actual character, I'd suggest Shelby from Best of Both Worlds. I know she's a character in those Excalibur books as well, but I don't think those are canon.

I was working out some ideas for a bridge scene, and as of now I was only envisioning a serious human female captain simply referred to as "The Captain."

Benteen was named for US Army Captain Frederick Benteen, who was criticized by some of kinda abandoning Custer at Little Big Horn to the Lakota Sioux and other groups. General Alfred Terry's forces show up on the scene afterward and when Benteen asks where Custer is, he basically tells him "He's dead, Jim."

During my review of the whole Benteen thing, I heard a throwaway line in Paradise Lost that I never noticed before. Don't worry, I'm not bringing that up again! LOL!

"Mister President, we can use the Lakota's transporters and communications system to mobilise every Starfleet officer on Earth in less than twelve hours. We've been preparing for something like this for a long time. We have stockpiles of phaser rifles, personal forcefields, photon grenades, enough to equip an entire army. I can start getting men on the streets immediately."

Personal forcefields? I always thought those were a Star Trek Online invention. Worf jury rigged one from a combadge to stop bullets in a Fistful of Data's, but I can't ever remember seeing one at any other time.

So what I'm asking, as we begin the ground portion of this, are these things we want to consider using? They apparently exist in canon in some form.

Sounds like personal shields are a thing and they might be used in Starfleet Security. I wondered about that, too. The answer probably has to do with budget concerns and plot devices haha I was surprised to hear that, too.

Since Starfleet Security had been stockpiling personal force fields on Earth in case of a planet-wide emergency, that makes me think that they are rare or hard to make. Why else stockpile them? Why only during an emergency? Why planet-wide? Why not use them for minor problems?

Makes me think of Quark in "Business as Usual," "the Breen CRM-1-14 works equally well against moving vessels or surface emplacements. It's guaranteed to cut through reactive armor in the 6-15 cm range, and shields up to 4.6 gigajoules."

The fact that it's able to penetrate shields as being a selling point, tells me that these shields are so effective, that weapons that can overload them are really rare. Maybe it's a relatively new development? Tech from the Borg?

As Chief Tactical Officer, I don't see why security personnel can't use them, it is the 2380s, afterall haha
