As I wrote my entry today I thought to myself, "Would the 'native Americans' on Dorvan V call themselves native americans?"
I mean, we use it to differentiate a group of people with cultural distinctions and heritage from another group. Yet, in the 24th century ... would Starfleet?

Good point. I'm sure they wouldn't call or refer to themselves as Native Americans. Maybe what is based off where they live, like Dorvanians? Dorvanites? Or something along those lines? Or something exoitc like Spirit Walkers Tribe of the Bear? or Hawk?
As I may not know much about Voyager or Chakotay's background other than there was something about being a Spirit Walker or worshiper?

They don't; they address themselves by their tribe.

I imagine they'd stay loyal to their tribe; that's the whole reason why they moved to Dorvan V, to preserve their history/culture. They'd identify themselves by their tribe for sure. I grew up around a lot of Florida Seminoles and my family grew up with the Pawnee. Their tribe is like their family name, comes with pride, history, culture. My great-grandpa was born in Pawnee Territory haha

Although we'll be developing our relationship with them as we go along, with us creating new people to interact with as we go along, the two named characters featured in TNG S7 Episode "Journey's End" will be mentioned. So we don't have to mess with figuring out their backstories following the episode they featured in, I made up a character, Wakoro, to be an upcoming council member who will be interacting with us as a liaison between us and the Tribal Council.

Let's call them "Dorvans" from now on since that is the name of the world which they now live on. Although they've kept their own unique tribal identities, they've adopted this as a title which all of them will acknowledge from outsiders. Within their own people, they'll use whatever name/title suites them best.

On your end of the writing, you could write about a certain tribe or tradition if you wanted. But, as a general storyline, we're not going to dive into each individual tribe, or focus of the different tribes. If your character starts talking to someone, one-on-one, you could explore a particular tribe; I'll probably do that, too.

Seems the most likely guess would be some sort of Puebloan tribe, like the Hopi. When talking to Picard, leader references a battle which I think I incorrectly identified as the Battle of Puebla, which is behind Cinco de Mayo, but was actually the Pueblo Revolt.
I guess Dorvanite works the best. Sounds the most Starfleetish as well. Or just "citizens" in general.

That's the problem with Star Trek, they didn't just use a real tribe, but kind of played up the whole generalized Native American stereotype, which was an error in my opinion. It would have been much more interesting to actually explore a known culture, and the changes that would occur over the years, but it looks like they just made him a hodgepodge of different cultures. Which is kind of insulting, actually, even though they might have just been trying to avoid controversy.
Looks like they kind of did the same thing with the Dorvans, but the intent there just seemed to have the episode deal with forced relocation, which many tribes suffered.

I feel they were just trying to avoid controversy by keeping things generalized within the shows. It's a lot simpler when you are talking about a group of people as a whole rather than the sub groups which make them up. There are known to be at least 562 Native American Tribes to be within the United States. Can anyone name 20 of these Tribes off the top of their head? I believe they made the hodgepodge in order to show us as much as possible, a taste of everything and leaving it up to us to learn the rest on our own.
I wish there was time to explore all of the cultures out there but there simply isn't enough time to explore all of them. That is the greatest issue in learning about anything; too much to learn and too little time. Or rather, have enough time to understand everything we learn.

We can use this hodgepodge with different characters for our characters to interact with. We can describe the clothes and not have to play by only one tribe's rules. We can describe Seminoles working with Hopi and anyone else, too.
You guys want to make it that the elders and young children are left behind while anyone able to work is kidnapped? I imagine the Nausicaans would be merciless with everyone, treating all able workers as slaves for mining. The ones that are left can't fight back cause they aren't strong enough now and their numbers are so few. A lot of the warrior types either got enslaved or killed.

I could probably name at least twenty, but I have to mention here that I don't have much of a complaint about the Dorvan V episode, because you don't need to name a specific tribe there due to the storyline. It is about relocation in general. However, I think the Chakotay thing was just lazy and hard to excuse. There are a lot of distinct Native American cultures, true. So pick one of them for Chakotay! *L* There are a lot of cultures in Europe, but Picard is French. There are a lot of cultures in Africa, but Uhura is from Kenya and is probably Waswahili. There are many states, but Bones is from Georgia. It is just weird that they just said, "Let's have a Native American cast member" and then said, "Let's just make some stuff up about his background!" *L* Having a Native American cast member doesn't mean that he has to represent all those cultures, by representing one, that's a lot in itself. But that's my opinion.
Oh, by the way....are only Teriir and Terry with Wakoro in the upper floors if the Embassy, and the rest of us milling around downstairs or elsewhere in the village?

Actually, the hodgepodge idea could make sense in that perhaps the Dorvanites are a coalition of different tribal groups that decided to go elsewhere. Perhaps there was one leader who had a vision of finding a land where they wouldn't be persecuted anymore during the days when lots of people were going off planet to found colonies. Maybe it was even an intentional thing - maybe whatever colonial board there was on Earth intentionally picked them so that their cultures and languages wouldn't die out.But traveling for 200 years, the cultural heritages might have merged a bit.
The Nausicaans seizing the able bodied sounds like a good idea to me.

At this time, there are 3 distinct groups in the Away Team;
The Field Team;
Hood, A'Mand, and Storm
They're examining local radiation spikes to figure out the best way to cleanse them.
The Medical Team;
Doctors Cushing and Svenson
They are beginning to take over the responsibilities within the local hospital.
Main Group;
Captains Teriir and Terry, Lt. Commander Biiqs, Lieutenants Ogbah and Locke, and Liason Wakoro
They are heading up to meet with Gul Enok and other leaders in the local government.
Everyone else is still aboard the ship.
You're with me, Leopard.
