I’m not sure why Saru is being avoided for Captainship at this point and I hope the ship being assigned a temporary captain doesn’t become a thing for each season.
I'm pretty sure this has to be the plan....new captain each season, unless it's Burnham, because this show is Burnham-centric. Giving any captain a permanent presence could steal Burnham's thunder. Pike is doing that in only one season! They're going to continue to use the captain of the season as a plot device, but not enough to take Burnham's spotlight away. Saru is so popular, the only reason he would become captain would be to give Burnham a reason to supercede him, due to his newly evolved aggressiveness.
I've lost all faith in the direction of the writing of this show.
I watch, only to support Star Trek, but that may be the wrong approach. Maybe not watching would force change. I'm scared that it will force Star Trek back off of TV though. UGH! What's the right answer here?

I don't think they will change the captain often after their journey into the future, because they do not have so many commanders or captains on board, to promote one each season.
But the answer to the question of who will be captain will be clarified in the 3 season, hopefully.

Let's suppose that Starfleet exists in the future that they have gone to. The entire crew will be blind to the socio-political map of the galaxy in their new era. Therefore, it's entirely possible that Starfleet command could assign a new captain. Although, I'd rather think that before that happens, the whole crew gets retrained and assigned to a new ship that doesn't have 500 year old technology.
Of course, if Starfleet doesn't exist anymore then the whole crew can go do whatever they want, albeit in an out of date ship that should be torn apart by the first weapon salvo from any enemy native to the new time period.

I can see disco season 3 being andromeda 2.0 with Burnham being captain and the crew flying round the alpha and beta quadrants trying to recruit previous federation member worlds to join a new federation.
This would be based on Starfleet and the federation no longer existing but I can see the writers going in the other direction to be honest

Yeah, but I've really enjoyed disc so far, so much that it's become my favourite trek, and to see them copy another show outright, even if it is a roddenberry, would be soul crushing.

This isn't correct, Andromeda was based on unused material from Roddenberry, while Roddenberry came up with the concept, no network was interested back then. Fast forward to modern day, some big shot decides re-use roddenberry's original concept for a shiny new scifi show with a different setting with roddenberry having nothing to do with its creation and slapped his name on the title to boost ratings.

Season Three may be where I get off of the Discovery Train. I thought Pike was a welcome addition and I would've loved to see him continue on with the show. But sadly the Enterprise needed her Captain back.
I can't wrap my head around going THAT far into the future. As pointed out earlier the ship's technology would likely be woefully out of date. I don't see what the Discovery would or could contribute to that time period beyond being a historical curiosity.
I'll give it a couple of episodes at least. That way I can see where they are going with this. But this move really really really took my enthusiasm down quite a few notches. I guess time will tell.

There was another guy, Robert Hewitt Wolfe involved in Andromeda. It was him that developed it from Roddenberry's notes. He left the show in Season 2 due to disagreements over the direction and format.
Of note is the fact he's also a Trek veteran. He wrote "A Fistful of Datas" which landed him a gig as part of the DS9 creative team that he held for 5 years before moving on.

I can't wrap my head around going THAT far into the future. As pointed out earlier the ship's technology would likely be woefully out of date. I don't see what the Discovery would or could contribute to that time period beyond being a historical curiosity.
I've never really seen that sort of thing as an issue for Star Trek tbh.
It is set in a galaxy filled with all manner of alien species all of whom developed various technologies at varying rates. So there's always going to be someone somewhere who is vastly behind on tech compared to others.
It never stopped the Pakleds becoming a pain in the arse in TNG, it didn't mean Voyager was instantly wiped out like a flea against the Voth, it didn't make Iconian technology so powerful it was unbeatable in various episodes, V'ger and even the Whale Probe could still be "defeated" despite being vastly superior to anything going up against them.
Star Trek is more about the story itself, rather than the specific of the technology and absolute realism. Voyager went a bit loopy with technology being the means to fix anything and I think it made people think it was all the mattered. In TOS and TNG we often saw the crew work past threats with much more ingenious ways. I'm hoping that's what S3 brings to the mix.
