Some random thoughts on anime history, as personally experienced by myself, and sometimes even documented by others;

The whole reason this thread exists and we have all seen so much, and such good anime is 'cuz Robotech broke open the West (and showed investors that those pesky licensing laws are worth tangling with, 'cuz there's a market for it after all!)

Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion gave us our major, repetitve themes and styles. Pretty much every modern anime can be placed in their family tree, at least in one way.

"Video-game" anime was a joke for the longest time.... and Sword Art Online still is : P (Overlord, RE: Zero, How Not To Summon A Demon Lord, Goblin Slayer, and uhm, one other are much better: each for different reasons, obviously~) On a few of them all I can say is hey.... don't judge [me].

Hmmm... what else.... oh, yeh-Naruto killed shounen-adventure (DBZ style anime) and Bleach revived it xD My Hero Academia is rivaling them all!

Slice-of-life has become a thing, if overplayed. A lot of it is rly good, though.

Then came the term "weeb." Which I am proud to be called : ) Now I just need a waifu and I'm all set for the apocalypse!

Best anime of all time = Rick Series of Robotech

Agreed, NGE (and Gainax generally) are pretty fundamental to modern anime (just look at all the Rei knock-offs, or that the Gainax Ending has become it's own trope). Gurren Lagann is still my favorite Gainax show though

Season 3 of SAO is really good, of course I've always liked SAO (Even Fairy Dance)

What're people's thoughts on Fairy Tail, which is currently playing out its eight and final season?

I've ploughed through the entire saga over the last couple of months, plus both movies, and I really like it. Okay, sure, some of the gags are repetative and cliche`, and the stories become a tiny bit repetative (don't they all) whereby they encounter a big bad foe that owns them for most of the series then BAM, Natsu gets overclocked somehow and wrecks everyone.

Okay, yes, some of the other characters have also grown stronger and taken more and more prominent roles (which is actually why I like the series, because its not always just about the protagonist), but its the same recipie each time, and this eighth season looks to be much the same as all the others.

I'm also concurrently watching:

That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime
Girly Air Force

I've got mixed feelings about Fairy Tail. It started out really strongly. The Tenrou Island and Tournament arcs were great...but it does tend to rely on "the power of friendship" a bit more than I'd prefer. That said, having read the manga, the "final" season should be impressive visually at least. I say "final" because there's already a sequel series, Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest that's being published now...

Reincarned as a Slime has been surprisingly good so far. I expected it to be as mediocre as most of the reincarnation shows that are coming out right and left, but it's managed to exceed expectations.
I haven't checked out Girly Air Force yet. If you've seen Shirobako you'll get what I mean when I say it give me a Third Aerial Girls Squad vibe

SAO Alternative is on Netflix now too! Should be a fun watch!

Neon Genesis Evangelion was released on Netflix the other night, complete with a new English VO (Super miffed that they didn't bring back the original cast, haven't even been able to bring myself to listen to what they sound like because to me, Tiffany, Amanda and Spike are Asuka, Rei and Shinji.), but enough of that.

This dude (who works for Crunchyroll, I guess, as it's on their Youtube channel), took the time and researched and outlined the 37 Separate Timelines in the Evangelion Universe (that encompasses all the Anime (TV/Films), Mangas, Games, Light Novels and Product Tie-Ins.

If you're interested, set aside an hour of your time, it's a good watch if you're like me and Evangelion was your Gateway drug.

Ah Zoids, a fond memory of my childhood, I remember coming home to watch it after school. Chaotic century was my Favorite of the Zoid Series, leena Toros of New Century was favorite Zoids Character, it was always Hilarious when she was pissed off. The One Episode where she got kidnapped was comedy gold.
