"A...a fan of the classics, I see?" Biiqs said, voice slightly elevated to be heard over the music. "I just dropped by to tell you, the metal you wanted is available in the armory. We did an analysis on the bomb casings, and some came back clean, so we won't need them as evidence."
    - Computer, reduce volume 75%.
The computer complied & the loud, heavy music reduced.
    - Thanks! Yeah, its a classic. An old girlfriend exposed this stuff to me early in the Academy. It's good, eh?
    ((TAG Biiqu))
    Max laughed a bit, saying,
    - Yeah, I know. My ears are fine, thank you.
    ((Tag Biiqu))
    - Would you like a beer?
    ((Tag Biiqu))
Max went to a case in the corner, cracked it open & pulled out two frosty, glass bottles with an amber liquid. He passed one to Biiqu & said,
    - Apollo blend beer, made specifically to celebrate Humanity's first steps on another planet.
The label had the fully assembled Saturn V rocket with the moon in half phase. The bottle itself had the Apollo 11 mission patch embossed into it.

    Holodeck

Tess walked into the holodeck, and found Jess, Jamie and T'Mep already inside.

"Hello you three, what are you doing?" Tess said

"Well Lieutenant we are going to do some combat training, me and T'Mep and you with Jess if you don't mind?" Jamie said.

"I would love to" Tess replied.

"Okay, I am gonna make it hard, computer begin flight simulation A.43, Advanced Difficulty" Jamie said "Lets start!"

The room shimmered for a second before Tess found herself sitting in the pilots seat of an Adrestia class fighter.

A voice played over the comm unit.

"Phoenix-1 and 2, you are cleared for take off" Said the voice.

Both fighters left the hangar, to emerge into a battle. Beams of orange and green energy were flying left and right with fighters spewing from some of the bigger ships.

"Lt, I recommend we start forming an attack pattern with Jamie and T'Mep" Said Jess.

"Copy" Tess replied as she reached over to the comm unit, "This is Tess, recommend forming attack formation Omega-32, charge phasers and begin attack run"

"Jamie here, Klingons are deploying a hit and run tactic, recommend engaging the fighters attacking small frigates and shuttles" came the reply.

"Agreed, attack formation, head towards the frigate U.S.S Vicious, fire at will on enemy fighters" said Tess.

The two fighters grew closer to the frigate, until they opened fire with their pulse cannons, shredding the hulls of some of the weaker fighters and ripping the more protected klingon vessels shields apart.

Behind the fighters several Klingon vessels exploded in flames, while two smaller frigates from the Federation blew apart.

"Damn, we need to stop them" Said Jess, shaking her head.

"Tess to Jamie, head towards the Negh'Var class Battleship, we are going to do as much damage as possible" Said Tess.

    "Copy" came the reply.

They sped off towards the warship, and once within range started firing torpedoes and pulse cannons at it, to little effect. A few cruisers joined in, pummelling the warship on all sides, but its shields held firm.

Tess's ship was hit first, shields went down to 10% and a console explosion, had it not been a simulation, would have turned Jess into a smoking pile of ashes. Jamie was hit next, by an automatic disruptor cannon. A disruptor beam blew the ship apart moments later.

"Damn it" Tess said "Fine, I'll just have to do this the hard way"

Tess had studied Klingon Warship design, and knew where the bridge on the ship was.

The Adrestia class slammed into the bridge blowing it apart, Tess saw a bright flash, and the simulation ended.

"Nice job, ma'am. Come on, lets get something to eat" Said Jamie.

The four pilots walked towards the bar area.

    - Computer, reduce volume 75%.
The computer complied & the loud, heavy music reduced.
    - Thanks! Yeah, its a classic. An old girlfriend exposed this stuff to me early in the Academy. It's good, eh?
"Its...not without it's cultural merits, I'm sure." Biiqs said politely. "It reminds me of a particular Talarian piece that's designed to be played at such a volume, and only once, so that the hearer goes deaf at the end, intentionally, so that it's the last song they hear. I hope you weren't trying something similar, but I do appreciate you turning it down for me." He then added loudly, "Thank you," as if Max couldn't hear.

    Max laughed a bit, saying,
    - Yeah, I know. My ears are fine, thank you.
Biiqs laughed. "I was just kidding. Some music needs to be experienced with all the fullness of sound. I understand. I'm fond of Klingon operas, among other things."
    - Would you like a beer?
"Sounds wonderful! I just came from Four Forward, but I didnt really have anything more than a tonic water. You've got the real stuff?" He moved over to a couch to have a seat.

"Now that is the real stuff! Hmm, the Apollo 11 mission. Haven't seen this patch since elementary school. I was born and raised mostly on Earth, you know. Sheridan, Wyoming. Was this brewed on Earth or Luna?" He took a short swig, and answered his own question "Oh, this must have been brewed on Earth...."

    Max nodded & said,
    - Brewed in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
He flicked a tiny door open on the side of his mechanical hand. Max used the device to open his own beer, then closed it. He took a swig and said,
-When I was a kid, this kind of stuff amazed me. Still does. The fact that the human race was the closest it was to an all out nuclear conflict at that time, on top of the US fighting a war that they were losing, we sought to reach our hands out to the sky. I must've seen the launch about a hundred times by now.

    Max smiled and said,
    - I get that from my mother. She was apart of a civilian agency called The Astrological Research Group. Dad, on the other hand...
    He sighed a bit, saying,
    - ...felt that the ARG was unnecessary, as Starfleet was doing the lion's share of the scientific research for the Federation. One of the benefits of the Academy is not hearing your parents argue constantly. Even then, I couldn't get away from it.
    ((Tag Biiqu))
Max took another swig and went on,
    - Mom & dad were visiting in my first year. Dad was able to get off-time for a week. The argument started in the courtyard & it just blew well out of control. He was close to getting physical with her & I had to grab a hold of him and back him off. Him being a superior officer meant I got a ding on my record, but I didn't care. She moved out shortly after they got home & two weeks later, she filed for divorce.

Christopher sat down in his quarters with a sigh. He had spent a great deal of time with Therak trading insults until the Andorian's antennae could take no more.

"Computer, begin recording medical officer's log, current stardate." He instructed.

    =/\= Begin when ready. =/\=

"Lt Christopher Cushing - USS Ares, Specialist Trauma Doctor. I placed a call today to Doctor Hems who has remained on the planet below to assist the colonists in their journey back to health. Right now he has asked me to 'keep things ticking over' until he knows what he's doing. Whatever that means. Anyway, the medical department has a new volunteer, a baby and I'm also discharging Chief Hayes tomorrow but I'll let him enjoy the peace of sickbay for one more night. The Nausican we have in custody is recovering well after his injury and, sadly, Ensign Barron remains in remarkably good physical health aside from a moderate case of sunburn to the face due to a phaser blast on heavy stun. End of log entry."

Christopher set about tidying up his quarters and tossed his uniform into the cleaner. Moving to his bedroom, he wasted no time in closing his eyes, dreaming of Nimbus III and Commodore pips.

"Well, it still amazes me, honestly, that humanity was able to look past the chaos into the stars. Usually that takes place after you get the unrest on the planet dealt with, for most civilizations. Humanity is a puzzle, that way. Is that what inspired you to reach for the stars?

    Max smiled and said,
    - I get that from my mother. She was apart of a civilian agency called The Astrological Research Group. Dad, on the other hand...
    He sighed a bit, saying,
    - ...felt that the ARG was unnecessary, as Starfleet was doing the lion's share of the scientific research for the Federation. One of the benefits of the Academy is not hearing your parents argue constantly. Even then, I couldn't get away from it.
Biqqs frowned. "I'm sorry to hear that. I, for one, tend to side with your mothers line of reasoning. Starfleet has a robust talent pool, but by no means the only talent pool, or the most superior. There are civilian scientists and research societies that make as many breakthroughs as Starfleet does, both from the data we provide and their own independent research. But that's besides the point, I suppose. Did your parents' relationship improve?"

    .
"Wow, that's....I'm sorry to hear that." He couldnt figure out what else to say, so he let it lie for a moment and took another sip of his beer. "You did the right thing, for what its worth. How's your mom doing now? Is she still with the ARG, stationed somewhere offworld?

    - Charlottetown, PEI. She moved there after the divorce.

"PEI...PEI..." He tried to place the abbreviation. "Oh! Canada! Prince Edward Island....you know, I have a cousin near that region. In Newfoundland. Exports this sort of brined, aged fish. It's a pretty well respected delicacy on Bolarus IX...actually, it would go well with this beer..."

Captain Teriir’s eyes shot over to the Captain’s Chair the moment he stepped off the turbolift. Commander R’Turan was sitting there but stood up after flicking his ears, knowing immediately he was there and joined him, “I had a feeling you wouldn’t be spending much time in sickbay.”

“You would have to strap me down to keep me from my duties,” he joked about his earlier injuries from the other day, “Anything new from up here?”

“Starfleet Command is starting a full internal investigation of the conspirators’ actions. Beyond that there is nothing new to report.” the First Officer replied while making an effort to suppress a yawn.

Teriir nodded subtly and answered thoughtfully, “That’ll due, Commander. Go ahead and get some rest, I suspect you stayed up all of last night.”

The Caitian hesitated but didn’t object to the suggestion. After he departed for the turbolift, the Captain looked over to Lieutenant Kenny, “I have a feeling he’s left out a few things.”

“Yup, but at least it’s only some shipboard stuff,” she responded energetically, “Mr. Urquhart and his fiancé have been working on some wedding preparations.”

“Have they decided on some of the details yet?”

“No, although it looks like . . .” she paused and snapped her fingers after remembering what she wanted to say, “Akyv is starting to get settled in. She’s starting up some work in Sickbay as a nurse.”

“Good to know,” he smiled and reminded himself of something he wanted to know before he met up with the Exchange Officer, “Was there any word of a Klingon Officer coming aboard?”

“A Klingon?” Kenny repeated with a frown, “Not to my knowledge but he’d likely come aboard the Civilian transport or the USS Angelic. Why are you . . . oh.”

“His name is Thane Va’rek,” he informed her, “The name doesn’t fit for a Klingon but we’ll know more about him soon. I will be meeting with him in my ready room in a few minutes.”

“Okay,” she grunted and returned to reviewing a series of tactical scans of the Nausicaan starship they fought yesterday. Teriir himself headed over to the ready room.

Inside, he thought about how, barely a month ago, this belonged to someone else. Their first Captain, Matthew Wilson, had a drawing of an Intrepid Class starship hung along one wall which had since been replaced with an Akira. A colorful and complex statue stood in one corner of the room. It was a gift made by one of the survivors of Aureum as thanks to his contributions in ensuring their escape during the battle. Along another wall was a relic from Aureum, an unusual tablet kept within a shadowbox. It had a series of jewels neatly arranged at the ends of numerous etched marks all along its surface. He sat down in his chair and picked up a PADD and began searching for information on the Klingon Empire.

The Empire, though dominated by the Klingons, had several other races within its borders which he knew were normally kept in one form of servitude or another. He was also aware of numerous Houses employed mercenaries to work for them and some were given the rare honor to be adopted into their House. He didn’t know much if anything of the specific practices as the Klingons tended to shun anyone who wasn’t Klingon within their hierarchy. Whoever this Exchange Officer was, he must’ve either earned a fierce reputation or was being pushed away by the KDF.

A chime on the door made him stop and put the PADD down, “Enter.”

He looked up to see his guest and blinked in surprise as a large Caitian stepped inside. No, he realized after noticing his bulk and fangs, a Ferasan. He remembered a Civil War resulted in the group now known as the Caitians flee their original homeworld and resettle on modern day Cait. This left the Ferasans to take over their original planet as their own. He was going to have to be careful when including the Klingon Officer with the Caitian crew members as he was aware relations between their races were tense at best.

“Welcome aboard the Ares,” he stood up from his seat to greet his guest, “I am Captain Dyrell Teriir.”

Thane carefully took note of what was present in the room, the display picture of the Akira class vessel, a ship he was familiar with and the reputation that it carried. He recalled the rather hefty armament they carried and was the Federations first recent response to needing a proper warship, photon torpedo tubes, phasers and that pod in the back was fitted with rapid-fire launchers. A dangerous ship to face off as he remembered. The statue was an oddity to make note of for sure, reminders perhaps of something? He noted the odd box on the wall and noted it for a brief moment. Teriir stood to greet him, Thane was not as large as some would expect, the uniform he wore with the protective armour on did add to the bulky look, “Lieutenant Thane Va'rek.” He would greet him in turn. He spoke in fairly fluent English thanks to Xeno-linguistics study, even if it had an accent. The greeting was followed with a very brief flash of the teeth in a manner to show he was not a passive individual by any means but it wasn't a show of threat or dominance. Fairly normal for Ferasans. Least you wanted to do was show to be passive unless you were very much down the bottom of the proverbial food chain.

“I do apologise for the rather sudden advent of my presence on your ship. I would hope that a message would have been relayed ahead. However, I have here a PADD with my details and manifest.” He would with a smooth motion, offer up the PADD towards the Captain. The data on it was a last minute assignment change from the USS Helios to USS Ares. It contained his profile, pertinent details for Medical, security and capabilities along with anything else considered important and lastly, a small cargo manifest that was coming along with him. The manifest contained the basics that any crewman would require to live and function on a ship, their uniforms, clothing and simple personal effects, included with that were his weapons, Issued Disruptor Rifle, Pistol of which both had been modified to meet his personal tastes and requirements, Mek'leth, Bat'leth, D'k'Tahg and a Kut'luch. He had his Armour, of which Thane was wearing at the time as well as a thinner set for wearing under a normal uniform. He had brought along a few trophies of his from the war, collectibles that had been taken from fallen foes or places he had been. A Virtual Display Device, a Jem'Hadar Rifle, a schematic and holographic display of a Dominion Battle Cruiser. Finally a small list of parts labelled 'Pet Project'.

“I imagine you may have questions or concerns for me?” He would then enquire. Keeping his gaze focused on the man.

“Lieutenant Thane Va'rek.” He would greet him in turn. He spoke in fairly fluent English thanks to Xeno-linguistics study, even if it had an accent. Fairly normal for Ferasans. Least you wanted to do was show to be passive unless you were very much down the bottom of the proverbial food chain.
Captain Teriir felt his eyes narrow and his jaw clamp together in response to the Var’rek’s facial expression. He wasn’t as familiar with Ferasans as he was Caitians but he knew about the pride of KDF Officers so understood this was a show of strength. Remaining standing after the handshake, he decided to be upfront with him on his arrival, “I was not informed of a KDF Exchange Officer would be joining my crew.”
“I do apologise for the rather sudden advent of my presence on your ship. I would hope that a message would have been relayed ahead. However, I have here a PADD with my details and manifest.” He would with a smooth motion, offer up the PADD towards the Captain.
Accepting the offered PADD, he looked through its contents. He nodded subtly to acknowledge the transfer from the starship Helios and took a guess, “I suspect this was missed due to a number of crisis we needed to resolve yesterday. One a confrontation with an attack by pirates on this ship with the other being a . . . inside man for said pirates.”

He finished browsing through the PADD and its manifest and eyed what was described as a pet project. The Captain also took note of the number of personal effects and wartime trophies. Teriir decided to have a brief conversation with the Ferasan and gestured for him to take a seat, “Everything seems to be in order.
“I imagine you may have questions or concerns for me?” He would then enquire. Keeping his gaze focused on the man.
“Mostly questions. The one thing I want to inform you of though is that a number of my officers are Caitian, including my First Officer, R’Turan. I know Ferasans and Caitians have quite a history so I will be reminding everyone to be courteous towards you,” Teriir commented, observing something he felt was going to be the notable potential issue. He was confident his crew would carry themselves well but, as he knew little of Va’rek, wanted to stress the importance of avoiding unnecessary conflict or drama among the crew.

    (( TAG: Thane )

Satisfied, he nodded and looked at him more curiously, “Good. Now, the questions; How did you become a member of a Klingon House? Also, I noticed a mention of a "pet project" in your manifest. Is there anything we should know about it?”

    Max smiled and said,
    - Salt Cod? Its pretty damned good. Haven't had it since I graduated. Stuff's hard to find in Texas.
"Uhm...close. But not exactly. Its aged in the Bolian way, so it's not very palitable to humans, not like normal salt cod. I've seen holos of the operation up there. Prince Edward Island seems like a lovely place."

He finished off his beer & went for a second.
    - That's where the ARG's main offices are. Dad got a good talking to from Gramps after that & i think put him on a very long patrol assignment. He knew I was trying to protect Ma, but there was nothing he could do about it, except attach a note to the discipline record, explaining the situation.

"Hmph," Biiqs drained the rest of his beer and considered his next words for a moment. "I believe in second chances, of course, and am a fan of redemption, but you'd think that it would have been difficult for your father to find his way back to a captain's chair after that. Maybe not a reduction in rank, but a non-starship posting for a while.
But I suppose the right counselor could write it off as a singular incident instead of long term anger control issues."

Max hands him another beer, saying,
    - He definitely had anger control issues. Everyone's amazed he's still holding four pips & riding the centre seat of a starship.
"Thank you," he said, as he accepted the second beer. "I suppose it wouldn't be the first time. Starfleet sometimes prizes effectiveness over personality, and it's gotten worse due to the dearth of leadership that the Dominion War left us with. But I know this situation must be a proverbial thorn in your side."

He cracked his own beer open, took a sip & said, slowly,
    - Family's a funny thing, isn't it?
"It is." He opened his own beer, and let things stay quiet for a moment before continuing. "I used to think my old man was the worst person in the sector. Every day seemed like a fight. Not a physical one, but...he just seemed like a bully, you know? Always criticizing me and the things I was interested in. He was an agricultural scientist, although he just called himself a farmer, and it seemed like he wanted me to carry on in his footsteps. One day, when I was 17, we had such a big argument...a fight to end all fights. I actually thought he was going to hit me. And what's worse, I wanted him to, you know? I was ready. I was the Regional Silver Gloves boxing champion at 15, right? I was ready.

But one look at my mother's face, and it was like a knife in my chest. I couldn't put her in the middle of that. I left. Took a position on one of my grandfathers transport ships, Tarquin Shipping Systems, you might have heard of them. That was to spite my father too, because he'd turned his back on my grandfather and the family business too." Biiqs chuckled a bit. "I thought he was the biggest hypocrite alive for trying to force me into doing what he did, when he didn't even listen to his own father."

He took a sip and continued. "Life on the transport Rorga Xinn was fun, but I didn't want to become my grandfather either, so I enlisted in Starfleet. Nobody seemed to like that decision, which suited me fine. Years later I found that my father thought he was giving me 'tough love' so I'd find my own path. He wrote to me. I was incensed. Horrible parenting, I thought."

But one day, while i was stationed on the USS Cairo, I vented all that out to the chief engineer, this big bear of a Kazakh, and he told me something I'd never forget."

"He said, 'The worst thing about bad fathers is when you realize that you're a better person because of them.' It took me a while to digest that, but he was right. I forgave him after that. I'm not saying you should do the same, but you should realize that if your father gave you nothing else, he gave you a moment in which you were able to define yourself. You stood up, against your father and risked your career for what was right. A pity I didn't work Starfleet Academy when that happened, because I would have given you a commendation. That's exactly what anyone should want in an officer, and that's the officer I saw who risked his life during a crazy firefight in a cargo bay just to get a chance at getting elbows deep inside a bomb."

Max smiled at this & said,
    - Thanks.

Thane watched the man intently prior to being motioned to sit, in which he had done so with his tail shifting a little in the chair so he was comfortable, it curled around a touch and hanging near his thigh with a slight twitch to the tip. A certain curiosity was evident on his expression as he paid attention to the man and his mannerisms while he spoke and voiced his position concerning Caitains, Ferasans and their interactions. "That must of been who I picked up on whilst on the bridge. Your first officer." A slightly amused grin would form on his expression "If any of the Caitains on board wish to start something based upon history I have not actively participated in, they had better have the spine to take it to a Holodeck for a good match. I may have respect for them at that point. I will not however be the origin of any problems that will arise. There are better challenges to overcome." He would say.

Satisfied, he nodded and looked at him more curiously, “Good. Now, the questions; How did you become a member of a Klingon House? Also, I noticed a mention of a "pet project" in your manifest. Is there anything we should know about it?”

"How did I become a member of a Klingon House? The simplest answer would be through loyalty, dedication, conducting myself with honour and proving my capability through the challenges I faced. I earned the trust and respect of the House Patriarch while he earned my loyalty through thick and thin. Something those who are familiar with Ferasans would recognise as a rarity." He had switched to using his own language at this point and letting the universal translator do its job.

"That project should not cause any issue for you, simply an experiment I work on when the mood arises. I am trying to replicate the Shroud effect on a technological level. However doing so has proven difficult due to the miniaturisation of the technology involved. Something more practical than the Isolation suits I have seen used."

“Hmm . . .” the Captain pondered what he was being told, picking up on what Thane was saying in his native tongue. It was so similar to Caitian but different enough that he needed to hear the universal translator to understand everything. Loyalty to your people was a trait he regarded highly while the experiment was interesting. It reminded him of the Jem’Hadars’ shrouding ability. He nodded and gave him some approval, “Sounds like you’ve had quite a history with the Klingons. If you need some assistance with your experiments, I’ll consult with our Science officers to have a lab open for you.”

"The shrouding ability is exactly what I was implying with it." He would speak up, that cat now out of the bag. "I would not need a Lab I do not think.. After all that could constitute a violation of the Treaty of Algeron with the Romulan Empire." The mention of the Star Empire came with a significant turn in tone to that of distaste at the lightest. Something that Thane had partly inherited from his time in the Empire, along with some personal encounters.

He'd pause a bit and considered something, he checked his own PADD and then glanced up to Teriir "What will my duties be onboard? Who's command will I be stationed under? " He would finally ask, curious a bit on that and despite his outward, calm demeanour he was eager to find out just what he would be doing on what he considered to be a Federation Warship. "I would hope not being relegated to Waste or Environmental Technician on deck Fourteen." He would say. Was it Humor? Hard to tell with the slight language barrier.

    Attachment 9773

    Attachment 9774

Christopher sat bolt upright in bed with a hoarse scream still on his lips, sweat pouring down his face and chest and breath coming in ragged gasps. He clutched his chest, the pain was unbearable.

"Lights!" he gasped as he fell out of the bed and reached for his tricorder. His hands were trembling and it took him a few moments to set the tricorder to run a scan on himself.

After a few moments, the tricorder beeped to tell him that the scan was complete. Christopher transmitted the data to the monitor on the wall, still breathless and unable to stand. Nothing he could see made sense to him, his mind still too jumbled. "Computer, analyse these results." he managed to croak.

=/\= Stand By =/\= came the reassuring voice of the ship's computer. =/\= Analysis complete =/\=

    "Conclusion?"

    =/\= Severe anxiety attack =/\=

"So I'm not having a heart attack?"

    =/\= Affirmative =/\=

Christopher sat on the floor for a while as the pain in his chest subsided and his breathing returned to normal. So that was it, anxiety attack. Severe anxiety attack, he corrected himself. Four letters flashed through his mind. Four letters that he couldn't ignore because if he did it would make him a hypocrite. PTSD.

How many times had he comforted people in the same situation? How many people had he sent to counsellors?

There was only one person on board that he felt he could talk to. With a determined effort, Christopher raised himself off the floor and set off for sick bay. He needed to talk to Chief Hayes.
