USS Ares
Deck 10 – Diplomatic Complex
Captain Teriir noticed the door to Sam’s Office close just as he came into view of it and paused in his walk towards it. He figured Ambassador Th’votrak just went inside and decided to let him have a moment with his soon to be son-in-law. Remembering the damage done to this section from the intentional console explosion, he opted to inspect the completed repairs. Specifically, the console mount opposite the door to the office.
He booted it up and ran a search through archived recordings aboard the ship. There was a lot he could potentially choose from to review but because he was merely checking to make sure things were in working order he didn’t play any. Satisfied, he closed out of the console and deactivated it . . . only to watch it remain powered on. After trying to shut it down two more times, he gave up and entered in a maintenance request for the console. Turning his attention back to the Office, he stepped up to the door and tapped the adjacent panel to announce his arrival.

Stepping inside, the Captain smiled a greeting to Sam and the Ambassador, “Good morning!”

Taking a seat, Teriir took a deep breath, “It sounds like you’ve been extremely busy and are ready to go! I will admit to being nervous. Although I’ve been involved in weddings previously, this is the first time I will be conducting the ceremony. Is there anything special you need me to do based on Human or Andorian tradition?”

Sam smiled and returned the greeting, then said,

U.S.S. ARES
Deck 8 – Enlisted Quarters
Jei stood in front of the mirror looking at herself. She was in Medical blue, a color she hadn’t worn since being expelled from the Academy. The gold single pip of an ensign caught her eye.
* * * * *
“Dude, go make your move already. For three years, you’ve been saying she’d be putty in your hands… so go prove it,” goaded Cadet Lucas.
Cadet Hunter Basset scoffed and glared at his group of friends. They were all elite cadets. Legacy cadets or the children of the well-connected and powerful. Thus, they were as near to royalty as one could be. Instructors and Professors treated them with ‘kid gloves’ not wanting to risk the ire or retribution of these cadet’s parent or relative. It wasn’t worth their career and it was simply easier to get them through their class so they can become someone else’s problem. Hunter Basset knew this and used it to his advantage whenever he could.
“I think he’s all talk… no substance other than hot air”, harassed Cadet Abrams.
Cadet Christianson chuckled seeing Hunter begin to turn several shades of red. It was a group pastime to pick and bully others, but it was much more enjoyable to pick on each other, especially Hunter Basset.
“Enough! I’ll show you all…” stated Hunter with more force than conviction. He stood up from the study table shared by his other three ‘friends’ and walked over to female cadet several tables away.
Halfway to his destination, he stopped and turned to look at Cadets Lucas, Abrams, and Christianson. He gave them a glare of anger, as they were laughing hysterically... at his expense. His pride forced his feet onward and he soon found himself standing next to Cadet Jei Han. She was focused on her PADD, dictating her study notes for her xenobiology exam for later review. Due to this, she didn’t notice Hunter standing there for a good few minutes.
Seeing him standing there, Jei looked up and blinked, uncertain why he was there. As he didn’t say anything, she turned her attention back to her studies.
“Um… Hi there. We are in the same xenobiology class… well, we’ve been in the same classes for the past three and a half years,” babbled Hunter.
Jei looked over and blinked again, trying to understand what Cadet Basset wanted. “Is there something you need from me, Cadet Basset?” inquired Jei.
“YES…um… Yes. There’s a party tonight at Boothie’s… and you should go with me,” stated Hunter.
Jei put down her PADD. “What do you mean… I should go with you?”
“Because. I’m Hunter Basset. I can introduce you to some people…” smiled Hunter as he sat down in the chair next to Jei.
“Thank you for the offer, Cadet Basset, but I have more studying to do tonight,” rejected Jei.
Hunter’s ears began to burn and his patience was running thin. He didn’t experience rejection often and he certainly did not know how to handle it. He glanced over at his friends and saw them still laughing hysterically at his embarrassment. His pride demanded that he assert himself. Under the table, he placed his right hand on Jei’s thigh.
Jei felt a hand grip her left thigh and squeeze in a strong grip. She immediately looked at Hunter with a shocked stare. Looking at his smug grin, Jei sensed his primal thoughts and it scared her. Before she could use her left arm under the table to push his hand away, Hunter seized her left wrist with his left hand. Panic started to enter Jei’s mind, but she fought it back. “This is my one and last warning, get your hands off me,” demanded Jei.
Hunter grinned. “Look babe… as I said, I can help you… but you’re going to do something for m…”
Jei didn’t let Hunter finish. With her right hand, she picked up her cup of hot tea nearby and threw it at Hunter’s face.
“Yeoooooooowwww!!! What the %*&@ you b%*@&!” Hunter screamed as he leaped back wiping his face of the lukewarm liquid.
Jei stood up, and threw her PADDs into her school bag. “I asked you to remove your hands off me. You ignored my warning and I responded in kind.” Jei looked around and saw no one coming over, in fact everyone seemed to be ignoring the whole incident, except for Hunter’s friends several tables away who were laughing.
Hunter scowled at his friends and then back at Jei. “You will regret this Jei,” cautioned Hunter.
Jei quickly picked up her remaining PADD and turned it off, not realizing that it was still recording in dictation mode. “Goodbye Hunter, may you have a nice day.”
As Jei quickly left the study hall, Hunter continued to glare. He was too angry to move, too angry to speak, but in his twisted mind, he began to formulate his plan of revenge.
* * * * *
The door chimed. “Enter” stated Jei as she straightened her collar before turning to walk the few steps to the door of her small quarters.
“Attention on Deck!” announced a warm voice. This was followed by a couple of pairs of noticeable boots clicking their heels.
Before Jei, stood three men. All in security gold.
“Chief Hayes, Eddie, Martin…” acknowledged Jei, “What are you jokers doing here?”
“Officer on Deck…” stated Chief Hayes as he, Eddie, and Martin in unison saluted Jei.
In reflex, Jei saluted back.
“Ma’am… we just wanted the honor and privilege to be your first salute,” replied Chief Hayes.
“And to offer our congratulations…” added Martin.
“And our support…” concluded Eddie. “And may I add, you look good in blue.”
Jei took a breath, to stem her building emotion, and walked forward looking each man in the eyes. “Thank you. I never thought this could happen… but I am excited about this.”
“You’ll do splendid, Miss Han. I have no doubt that you will excel,” offered Chief Hayes.
Jei smiled at the three men as she glanced at them, then her smile turned into a grin. “Good. Now let me be clear here… if *any* of you ever get hurt…”
Martin grinned broadly as he interrupted, “You will make sure we are treated well…”
“No,” countered Jei. “I will certainly make sure you live and recover fully… so you can regret every moment that you allowed yourself to get hurt.”
Martin’s grin turned into a frown of shock. He looked over at his new Chiefs, Eddie and Hayes. “She isn’t serious about that, right? That was a joke, right?”
Chief Hayes simply gave Jei a nod.
Eddie kept his eyes on Jei, “I aim to obey that order… to the best of my ability. I suggest you do so as well, Martin.”

Sam turned to A'ral and said,
- I'll leave that to you.
A'Ral nodded and said,
- There is an Andorian tradition that is known as, "The Joining of Bloodlines." I think I've come up with a suitable solution.
“Joining of the Bloodlines?” Captain Teriir asked, knowing this could mean just about anything. As there were so many races with so many customs in the Federation, one could never assume what something meant.
A'Ral Put his hands together & said,
- It'll require Sam & Akyv to slash their palm, then hold them together in a moment of bonding.
“Ah . . . that sounds similar to a Klingon adoption ceremony, only the blood is joined in a vessel instead,” he replied, completely understanding what they were doing, “I’ll make sure to tell anyone with medical training present that it’s alright and to have someone ready to heal the wound once it’s complete. Do you need a specific knife or do you already have one?”
“Yes,” the Ambassador said as he presented a small container to Sam, “That knife has been in our family for years. I believe I can trust it with you for the day.”
(( TAG: Sam ))
Teriir nodded with a small smile on his face, quietly pleased such an important family relic was being entrusted to him for use at the wedding. He took a guess, “I have a feeling we won’t be honoring just the Andorian tradition. I heard Mr. Storm was making something for you; was it for the wedding?”
(( TAG: Sam ))
“Okay, I’ll make sure to work the wedding ceremony so you can give her the ring and also do the Joining of the Bloodlines,” he replied.
“You seem to know your way around traditions,” the Andorian Ambassador observed, “How many weddings have you participated in?”
“This will be the ninth one I’ve had the honor of participating in and fifth custom I’ve had to observe,” Teriir admitted with pride. He was about to comment on the others when the door chimed once more.
(( TAG: Sam ))
He was expecting the bride to enter but instead it was Lieutenant Sy. She hesitated at the door with a PADD in her hands, “I’m sorry to interrupt, but Lieutenant Locke sent me a message involving something he’d been asked by the Captain to look into. He said there’s something you needs to see immediately.”
“Nothing bad I hope,” he commented, signaling her to come on over. Taking the PADD from her, he unsealed it and almost instantly blinked in astonishment. In the brief time it had taken him to get down to the diplomatic office, Locke uncovered a forth cadet had been involved in the accusations against Technician Han but had their involvement buried. As for a few other details from the Security Officer’s immediate findings . . . oh it was too good to pass up. He entered in a number of instructions for Locke, resealed the PADD, and passed it back to the Outfitter, “Please make sure Technician Han is available when the Athena arrives.”
“Ensign Han, now,” she commented a correction which made Teriir look at her curiously, “Doctor Cushing was looking for someone with higher level medical training on board and she qualified. He’s going to be training her to be a Trauma Specialist.”
“Excellent,” he grinned back before she left. The Captain looked back to the Ambassador and Sam, “It always seems like there’s something going on around here. At least it keeps life interesting.”
The buzz of the intercom interrupted their response. He recognized Commander R'Turan's voice, =^= Bridge to Captain Teriir. =^=
"Speaking of interesting," he chuckled as he tapped his combadge, "Teriir here."
=^= Gul Enok is requesting permission to beam aboard. =^=
"I'm afraid I am in the middle of something. Can you meet up with him until I become available?"
=^= I can do that. =^=
"Good, Teriir out," the Captain ended the call there. He drum his fingers on Sam's desk for a second, "Guess I was asking for that. What else is there for the wedding?"

“What?” Teriir managed to hold back a laugh as he gave Sam a look suggesting he was crazy. Taking a few seconds to recollect himself, he loosened his shoulders slightly as he looked over to the family crest along one wall, “I’d forgotten you’re Scottish. I’ll leave it open as an option for those in attendance. Compared to some of the other things I’ve had to do it’s rather mild.”
“What do you mean?” Ambassador Th’votrak asked.
“Let’s just say weddings held in the Betazoid tradition can lead to some awkward conversations among your shipmates for the next few days,” he avoided making eye contact with either the Ambassador or Sam. He recovered his composure and commented, “Anyway, is there anything else you need for the wedding? I know it’s being held on Holodeck 1.”

“Can we take a trip over there so I can take a look?” Teriir asked, curious about the castle and grand hall Sam was talking about. Before he could speak he had another thought, "Or should it be left a surprise for this evening?"

“Tempting,” the Captain replied appologetically, “But I’ve already eaten. Plus I need to go see about Gul Enok’s visit to the Ares.”

Exiting Sam’s Office, Teriir decided the quickest way to locate the Cardassian was to find his First Officer, “Computer. Locate Commander R’Turan.”
=^= Commander R’Turan is in Turbolift 5 heading to Deck 4. =^=
“The Brig,” he knew exactly where he was taking the Gul and anyone who may be accompanying him. He headed over to a nearby turbolift as well and hopped in to go join them.

Deck 4 – Brig
Captain Teriir stopped in his tracks the moment the doors opened to the brig. Wakoro, their contact to the Dorvans, was in the midst of a barely controlled rant aimed at the cells containing the Bajoran Extremists. Judging from the tone, this started up the instant the Gul and his party entered. He approached Commander R’Turan and Gul Enok, who were standing closer to Barron’s cell.
“My apologies for not being here to welcome you aboard,” he told the Gul, “I was needing to speak with our Diplomatic Officer about a couple of important matters.”
“No apology necessary,” Enok replied, shaking hands with the Captain, “We’ve been getting bogged down in discussions with our own government about this as well over what’s transpired.”
He shot a quick look at Wakoro, who was still yelling at the Bajorans. They looked more ashamed now than anything else; especially when the local official told them he felt as though they were wanting to become the Cardassians as they were during the Occupation. Teriir grunted, impressed by the bold statement, “Well said. No offense.”
“None taken,” the Gul shrugged dismissivley, “Their actions and ambitions are very similar to those who led the Occupation of Bajor so he’s simply stating the obvious.”
“You weren’t involved in that?”
“I was busy in Cardassian-Federation War.”
“Right,” Teriir bit his lip to remind himself not to go into that. He walked away and moved to Barron’s cell, “I’m sure you wish to meet one of the people in charge of the conspiracy.”
“That’s why I’m here,” Enok said with a determined expression as he moved to stand in a position which would make him the first thing Barron saw when looking out. Only problem was that, after the door opened, Barron was still curled up on the bed inside. The Cardassian looked over to Teriir, “How can anyone be asleep in a cell?”
“I’ll wake him up. Hey Barron! There’s a Cardassian here to see you!” Lieutenant Kurts spoke for the Captain. Almost instantly Barron was up on his feet and charging at Gul Enok. The traitor didn’t even get close as the forcefield flared when he slammed into it, knocking him to the ground. Kurts chuckled and moved closer to taunt him, “Good morning. Don’t put yourself back to sleep too soon; we still need to talk to you.”
“Thank you, Mr. Kurts,” Teriir said as he motioned for the Lieutenant to step aside and nodded to Gul Enok to signal it was alright to speak with their captive.

“Tempting,” the Captain replied apologetically, “But I’ve already eaten. Plus I need to go see about Gul Enok’s visit to the Ares.”
Sam nodded and said,
- Tell Enok he welcome to attend the wedding, if he so wishes.
Both Sam & A'Ral followed behind the captain and took a different lift to 10-Forward.
Bridge
Max had just woken up just a tad late. He had called into the bridge to say he'd be a few minutes late, as his alarm didn't go off at the appropriate time. Max quickly replicated a breakfast sandwich after he dressed, combed his blue hair, then headed to the bridge. Once there, R'Turan turned to him and said,
- Don't let it happen again.
Max nodded and sat at his console, took the last bite of his breakfast sandwich, then tucked the wrapper in his pocket. He looked at the chronometer on both his bionic arm & the ship. His arm was off by about twelve minutes, so he tried to sync it with the ships. It didn't work. He tapped his arm a few times, the fingers jerked wildly. R'Turan noticed this, went over to Max & asked,
- Does this happen often?
Max said plainly, but with a tone of worry,
- It never did this before. Permission to report to engineering. They might need to have a look at this.
R'Turan nodded, then said,
- Consider yourself off duty for the day. I'm thinking this might be more complicated than it seems.
Max nodded and swiftly headed to the turbolift. When he got there, Max called out,
- Where's the Chief?

USS Ares
Deck 4 – Brig
“So, what are you starting off with?” Barron asked Gul Enok, “Getting a giant container of water to dunk my head in to see how long I can hold my breath?”
“No,” the Cardassian replied, “That would’ve been an Obsidian Order or True Way tactic. From what I’ve heard, you’re allied so you should have been aware of this already.”
“Like you are?” Barron shot back.
“Were.”
“Whatever.”
“Still, the Detapa and Federation Councils are still in discussion on where to house you and your cohorts,” Enok said, “Some of us are in agreement on the idea of you living out the rest of your life on a Cardassian Penal Colony.”
“I’ve heard how you treat your prisoners,” the Traitor commented, his voice oddly implying pleasure, “I shall become a martyr for our cause!”
“Which is the exact reason you are being sent to a Federation facility instead,” he answered. Captain Teriir grinned as he heard the Gul’s satisfactory tone and saw Barron wince as though he’d been expecting a change since yesterday. At this point, his fate was sealed. Enok continued, “I hear there is a ship enroute that will take you to a more permanent cell and to stand trial for what you have done. You should actually be relieved about being tried in the Federation and not on Cardassia. You are technically considered innocent until proven guilty there.”
Barron’s features started fading and he flopped down on the ground. He looked thoroughly defeated. He softly commented, “My entire life was meaningless.”
“It could have. But you chose yourself over everyone else,” Enok commented as he tapped on the console to reseal the door. After it swallowed up the Traitor, the Cardassian continued, “I’ve seen people like him before. He truly believes in his cause which makes him dangerous. Anyone who is unwilling to consider alternatives, the ‘you are with me or against me’ ideology, can not be the way we make all of our decisions from now on.”
“Agreed,” the Captain replied, surprised by how swift that conversation was, “That is how people can ultimately be misled into believing in something dangerous is safe.”
The Gul nodded his agreement and looked back towards the entrance to the Brig, where Wakoro had finished his chewing out of the Bajorans. He commented almost to himself, “When will that ship containing the rest of his cohorts arrive?”
“Their most recent eta says they’ll be here within the hour,” Teriir answered, making the Gul turn back to him, “I know there isn’t exactly a whole lot of time but is there anything you wish to discuss before the Athena arrives?”
“There are,” he replied, “Is there somewhere we can speak?”
“Yes, my Office is on Deck 2,” the Captain informed him as the two of them departed the Brig.

USS Ares
Deck 2 – Captain’s Office
“So from what the Cardassian Civil Defense Force has been able to figure out so far,” Captain Teriir began summarizing Gul Enok’s comments about a number of Cardassian assets following the Dominion War, “There have been numerous Galor class destroyers, among other ships, stolen from reclamation facilities or have turned up missing. Most of them are believed to have been stolen by the True Way. Is it possible more could’ve been taken by other pirate groups like the Nausicaans or Orions?”
“There are a few which are known to have been stolen by them,” the Cardassian replied, looking at a large, digital map of the Federation Teriir had on one wall of his office. It didn’t contain any strategic details to worry about leaking, instead pointing out common knowledge information on an intractable display. He turned back to the Captain, “I heard the Orions used a Galor to infiltrate one of our colonies and proceeded to raid it. They were later caught and destroyed by one of our patrols.”
“Hopefully some of the supplies were salvageable,” he answered, “I know from recent developments, Admiral Barron was mismanaging supplies in an attempt to reallocate resources from those going to your people. I don’t know if any of her efforts succeeded or not but if they did . . .”
“I understand what you’re getting at,” Enok said while picking up the Kanar he’d been offered. He took a sip before finishing his thought, “A shortage in supplies being given to us because they were being stolen from your own. I would understand if this did happened though because you have your own people to look after.”
“I only wish we’d found out sooner. From some of the disturbing reports I’ve had to read, Admiral Barron hid enough relief supplies to adequately feed 30 million people,” Teriir passed the Gul one of the PADDs on his desk containing the information he was referring to. Enok browsed through it in silence but his face distorted in disgust.
“How can anyone abuse power like this?” the Cardassian finally commented as he somewhat absently tossed the PADD back down on the desk. He then looked at the Captain after wincing, “I know, I know. I’m speaking as one who was once apart of a system which did things like this regularly.”
“The people who were and are responsible are being confronted,” he observed positively, deciding not to get much further into that topic. Plus, it would not be wise to discuss the concerns he had about some of the Federation leadership with anyone from a foreign power. Teriir opted to move the conversation somewhere else, “They’ll pay for what they’ve been doing but we also can’t ignore the daily going ons.”
“You are right,” Enok said as he grinned broadly, “There has been more rain in the past week on Dorvan than there has in the last two years. Wakoro let me know that his people are getting ready to plant crops soon. I needed to let him know that they can’t yet because the soil reclamators my people made need more time to remove additional toxins from their fields.”
“I’d been wondering what you were doing with those industrial replicators we’d delivered to you,” Teriir smiled back, reminding himself of the pleasant event going on this evening, “I know you met with the Diplomatic Envoy assigned to my ship, Mr. Urquhart. We’re holding his wedding this evening. He told me that you are invited.”
“I’d be honored to attend but I must decline. I want to be there for a number of system checks my people are running for the controls of the defense grid you’ve been constructing,” the Gul explained, “I really don’t know if the Dorvans will be able to -”
=^= Bridge to Captain Teriir! =^= the intercom sounded above the Cardassian.
Teriir recognized the voice of his First Officer, “Go ahead.”
=^= The Athena has entered the system. =^=
“On my way,” he answered, rising from his seat at the same time as Gul Enok. The Captain could tell he was just as determined as he to getting the chance to confront the leader of the conspiracy.

I have never been a fan of weddings. Having outlived a few hundred of my closest friends I don’t think I get as excited about them anymore. I have taken this time to deep dive into my work and make a dent in all of the dents on this ship. Thanks to the wedding I have also had a shortage of manpower and am happily filling in where needed. Sadly, one can only avoid paperwork for so long so for the foreseeable future I will be stuck at my desk screen gazing.
It amazes me how long someone can go unacknowledged on a starship. I guess I can blame that on my own reclusive nature or the fact that the captain only calls when something breaks. Either way, I stay busy with this and that.

After saying goodbye to Jei in Ten Forward, Christopher had returned to Sickbay. He noticed that Doctor Hems' personal belongings had been packed up and moved out of the office leaving it somewhat bare. Christopher felt a pang of regret for Doctor Hems. He had certainly chosen the hard road for his next career step and Christopher hoped that it would lead to bigger and better things for the man. He also noted with no small amount of pride that the name on the office door had been changed, making his occupancy of the office more real.
Slumping down into his chair, Christopher began working on a training package for Jei to run through in the holodeck. Nothing too intense but real enough that Jei would begin to trust her previous knowledge and something that Christopher could chime in with suggestions. "Computer, activate EMH program."
The balding man appeared in front of him, "Please state the nature of the medical emergency."
"There isn't one." Christopher began, "I need you to help me put together a refresher program for someone who has been away from Starfleet medical for a few years."
The man bristled, "I'm a doctor, not a nursery teacher."
Christopher sighed and wondered when the EMH would receive a software update that included a better attitude, "Well, it's like this, you can either assist me and be useful or I can ask the Chief Engineer to overwrite your program with a version that will be more helpful. Which is it to be?"
"Well, really." the EMH huffed. "There's no need to..."
"I'm going to go ahead and assume that means you're going to help." Christopher interrupted.
"What are we working with?" the EMH's shoulders slumped in defeat.
"Candidate didn't finish her finals at the Academy but has a remarkable grasp of trauma medicine. I'd like to get her up to speed as a trauma doctor as soon as possible." Christopher explained.
"Really? Just who is this virtuoso of the medical community that we need to train?"
Christopher put down a PADD he was working on, "Does her name matter, Doctor? Will it reduce the scathing tone in your voice?"
The EMH frowned, "I project that with a reasonable level of skill, I should be able to bring the candidate up to the level of proficiency required to pass the medical board of review in two months."
Christopher leaned forward, "Now factor in shifts in an active sick bay in your equations."
"Assuming a level of activity and supervised training then the time required could be reduced by one week." replied the EMH.
"Perfect!" Christopher exclaimed, "Let's set it into motion. Where are you setting the simulation?"
"New York's New Amsterdam hospital would seem an appropriate level of activity for our candidate."
Christopher smiled, "Nice!"

An engineer directed Max over to the Chief, who looked lost in thought. Max said urgently,
- How are you with Micro mechanics?
“I have done some work in the field and have a few prototypes but nothing in production. Why do you ask?”
Max pressed a button & said,
- My arm starting glitching out on the bridge, as I was going on duty.
Rosek gets up from his desk and starts inspecting the arm. He notices the chronometer is off and tries to correct it to no avail. He looks at Max puzzled.
“I am not sure what might be causing this.”
Max said, worryingly,
- Its not serious, is it?
“I don’t think so, but it should be fixed as soon as possible so you can have a fully functional arm.”
“Until then I have the designs for one of my prototypes saved that I can replicate for temporary use. It will not be this advanced, but it may keep you on active duty until we can get this fixed.”
“I understand if you would rather not but either way we may need to deconstruct your arm to diagnose the problem.”
“Have you ever experienced anything like this before?”
((Max))
