I Know Why We Have To Pay To Rename Ships

I was watching the Voyager eps Equinox (s5 ep26, s6 ep1) on BBC America, and it dawned on me WHY we have to pay to rename and re-register our ships.

Not only does EVERYTHING have to be reprogrammed in the computers, but all the signage on the doors has to be changed, the hull has to be stripped and repainted, and the tchotchkes in the gift shop and The Dedication Plaque have to be remade. Then there are the changes that have to be made to personnel records, and the changes in the records back at Starfleet HQ...

It's not some simple process to rename and re-register a starship. So please, think about the turmoil you're causing when you click on the button to authorize the change.

He is the one that has to organize the massive project that would be renaming a vessel.

Think of all the sleepless nights. The missed birthdays. The forgotten anniversaries. The inevitable divorce proceedings.

Think of all the Captain's Logs and historical records that have to be annotated EVERY TIME a ship's name is changed!

Ensign Wetears served aboard the U.S.S. Lexington (NCC-2134) - renamed the U.S.S. Frontal Lobotomy (NCC-420420), renamed the U.S.S. Richard Longer (NX-69) - from Stardate 97395.69 to Stardate 97395.73 until being discharged without reason on Stardate 97395.82.

If the registration kept changing, maybe the name of the ship had a bad rep from those whom served... only ships like Enterprise get to keep living on because of a honorable tradition.

All I have to do is reference U.S.S. Pegasus... after the TNG episode, there was never a ship with that name referenced after that episode. Who would want a ship then named after one where the crew mutinied and then got stuck in an asteroid?

I can only imagine it when they rechristened the USS Yorktown (NCC-1717) to the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701A). Or when the USS Sao Paulo got special dispensation from the Chief of Starfleet Operations to be renamed as the Defiant.

I remember that episode when they talked about renaming the ship. It is obvious that something like that to be expedited could only come from the Admiralty...

Let me pose this question. Did they rename a constitution class ship to the Enterprise 1701-A or did they build a brand new ship from the keel up? I mean the time from when Kirk stole the Enterprise to when they returned to Earth for trial, there is no way a brand new ship was in the works during that short time unless it was planned to have the old one to be retired as the Head of Starfleet said to Kirk when he asked to "borrow" it..

The Enterprise-A was originally the Yorktown, the Enterprises Sistership that had just undergone it's Refit. The Enterprise-A wasn't a new ship, she was just as old as the old Enterprise.

Oh, quick paint job...

So did the Yorktown come back later? I think it was mentioned in TNG I think.

A refit ? I'm pretty sure the refit was horrible because in ST V, Kirk had trouble with the bridge turbolift doors.
...and lets not talk about Sybok and his groupies in search of 'God'...

While it makes the most logical sense, there's actually nothing in the official canon that confirms or denies that aspect of the ship's history. It being the Yorktown beforehand is lifted from non-canon sources.

The closest thing to history it gets is when Scotty mentions in Star Trek V that "I think this new ship was put together by monkeys", referring to the rash of malfunctions and problems the Enterprise is suffering from in Spacedock.

So how did they build a Constitution ship that quick, I mean the Enterprise was still on the naval ship registry and Star Fleet didn't know about the self-destruct until really the trial in ST 4. The only thing I could think of is they planned to retire the Enterprise regardless after what Khan did in ST 2 and they had a new Constitution in the works already.

Any info on this ?
