Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Final Unity

For those who remember this game, it was one of the most complete and ahead-of-its-time Star Trek games ever. It looks like it's been moved over to Abandonware status since I last had a hankering to play it so I decided to test out the super simple install made available on Archive.org.

I did a scan of this and didn't find anything malicious. I imagine Archive.org checks anything added to their software storage anyways.

You can just download the Windows Executable which seemingly installs a preconfigured DOSBOX container and does all the hard work for you. The only issue I had was the mouse wouldn't move when I first opened it up. I fixed this by going to the install folder, opening dosbox.conf with a text editor and changing the line "output=openglnb" to "output=ddraw".

After that, everything worked fine, the save games work, cut scenes, etc. I'm playing on a modern Intel system with RTX 2080 and a 4K monitor on Windows 10. I figure if it can work on here, it should work on about anything.

Oh man, I remember this game. I used to love it, but I also hated it if I recall correctly. I always got stuck on that planet with the baboons.

I still have an original boxed copy of this in the loft. It was the first game I got and played on my Pentium 75 way back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

I remember uninstalling a bunch of things just to make room for it on my old Micron PC.

My first play of the game took me 11 months because I missed a major clue and tried to find the Unity device by visiting every M class planet that I could while dodging Romulans constantly. Started over and beat it in about a week.

I just played the Matriarchal baboon world earlier today.

I play on the console. I joined the Chromebook Army 3 years ago.

I got tired of the bloatware on Windows and wanted a more simple PC Experience. I was never a Huge PC gamer so for me Chrome OS is optimal.

These days you can DOSBOX almost anything to play nostalgic games... also... if you have the GOG Galaxy service
