I'd still give this show another change on the 2nd season. Just like Discovery, 1st season is a meh but the 2nd one did hit it out for me. Though i can feel SPS is really getting tired of this role as JLP. I can't seem to feel the same magic when i first saw him back in TNG. Maybe its because of the current formats we have on TV shows/series nowadays

Sorry But while Threshold was awful, at least it was an original story. Shades of Grey managed to be a terrible story while being a terrible flashback episode. I also felt the acting in Shades of Grey was just cringe worthy - you could feel they all felt it was drek. In Threshold I got the impression they were at least trying to make the best of it.

If people don’t like the new shows fine; just no need to constantly try and post “evidence of failure”. Some people who claim to be Trek fans seem to want the IP to fail; how dire that make any sense?

People seem generally conditioned these days to believe that incredibly vocal minorities are a good way to push for positive changes in things, be it in consumer products, public policies, or yes even TV shows and other forms of media. Any good decision maker would look at the overall objective data instead of the loud opinions of a small group before making changes, though im sure we can all think of examples of many times where this doesn't happen and people panic into rushed decision. The google trends analysis isn't a bad way of trying to compare popularity, but the time frame isn't compatible as you said, although I would say Discovery is recent enough that the data can be compared relatively accurately with the right search terms.

Picard Ratings

I've seen this mentioned in a couple of places, but I'm not entirely sure if there's any truth to it - the article mentions that Sir Patrick is reluctant to come back again, but I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere. If it is true, then we could well see Picard as being the first of the new Trek series to fall.

Even if the viewer numbers are true (not commenting on the Patrick Stewart thing of course), it also does not mean all that much as it is pretty much in line with a lot of shows. A show as hyped as Picard was bound to attract a LOT of attention for the first episode.

Consider this headline: "TNG loses over a third of its viewers by the end of season 1!"
Actually true, viewers of ep1 were reported at 15.7 million, with the last episode getting 10.2 It actually dipped down to 8.9 during season 1. Same kind of dropoff as Picard.

Ps. Yes - I realize that TNG was actually in some danger of not getting renewed, but in the end, I doubt anyone would class TNG as a failure.

There's a story that Sir Patrick was so convinced that he was going to be fired and TNG cancelled in the first few months that he didn't unpack his suitcases until some time later.

I like Picard, but it took forever for it to actually get started on the plot. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost a lot of viewers who didn't wait around for things to actually happen.

There has to be at least a full episode worth of scenes where it's just establishing Soji is easy. Like all her scenes just harped about two points - she knows literally nothing substantial about this guy, but she's sleeping with him anyway. They could have taken out like 90% of the scenes before she activated. Yeah, we get it. You're not even sure if you trust the guy, but you're so easy you've been boning for a while.

Something to keep in mind about Trek shows in general is that they are heavily influenced by contemporary socio-political events along with Gene's vision for a utopian future for humanity. The original series was heavily influenced by the Civil Rights Movement in the US and the Cold War. TNG and its spinoffs came out at a time when the Cold War was ending, the Internet and globalism were on the rise, and fashion was becoming stupid (I'm looking at you big shouldered Romulan uniforms ), and you see that reflecting in the writing of those shows.

Fast forward to Disco and Picard, and we're at a time when nationalism is on the rise again globally, international relations are generally on the downslide for many countries, machine learning and artificial intelligence are impacting many parts of our lives, and attention to race, gender, and sexual identity inequalities is on the rise again. Both shows took a very heavy hand to these socio-political topics in their scripts. Discovery I think dialed it back somewhat in their sophomore outing, which partially might be why the "new" faces of Pike, Spock, and Number One were so well received and is ushering in Strange New Worlds.

As Sul-Matuul noted, no Trek series was a runaway hit during their first season and with the long dry spell of Trek on TV between Enterprise and Discovery, there was a huge amount of pent up demand and hype for these new shows, so it should be no surprise some of those people are disappointed. For those of us who stick with it, we can only hope these new shows are like the older shows in that they get better with age.
